Battle Royale Tournament

For the rest of May I'm running an unofficial tournament. All players who own Dread Lords or Dark Avatar are welcome and encouraged to participate.

The Scene

Conflict dominates the universe. More than a dozen unique races strive to conquer galaxy after galaxy; through war, diplomacy, culture and technology. In any given arena, one race might dominate and claim a system. But there are trillions of star systems.

What race could actually win it all and claim the universe? Since the early days of Galictic Civilizations 2 there have been strong opinions about which races are the strongest and which are the weakest. Well, its time to put your money where your mouth is. Submit games for your favorite race in the month of May, and stop back to see how the races are stacking up against each other.

The Rules

Who Wins: The Race which scores the highest when the raw scores of all the submissions are added up at the end of the tournament will win. All custom races are being combined into one race entry.

Tournament Length: This Tournament runs from May 1st to May 31st. On June 1st I will post the results of the tournament.

Submissions: Every skirmish matters! To submit your score to the tournament, simply post to this message with a screenshot from your metaverse profile.


Only games with a date in the lower right hand corner that were submitted between May 1st and May 31st will be accepted. No cheat flagged games will be accepted. If there is a question about the validity of any score, it will be resolved by referring to that players official metaverse profile by me. For this tournament, games played by all races will be counted. Players are free to submit as many games as they choose as long as they are legal metaverse submissions within the appropriate date range.

If you have problems taking a screenshot, please post the date, score, race and character profile where the metaverse game you wish to submit can be found.


So who will win? Which race is really the best? Will the Yor and Torians fight to the finish? Will the Iconians even manage to score? Your games will decide the answers!

Yor score has been added. Ha ha ha. I was wondering when the Yor were going to start making a showing. So many people think they are a strong race... lets see if their scores can actually bear that out.

I suppose maybe I should go strike first for the Arceans (get it, ha ha) quick. I also started a Korath game last night. Nice to see a variety of entrants, but we have the same three in the top spot still.

I see where there was some discussion on the part of previous started games being admitted. I started this one prior to the contest so if you don't want to include it I understand, but for a gigantic I wouldn't get one done start to finish in the time alloted. I will be going back to some smaller maps now, so maybe I can get some more in.

This epic game will place my favorite alien amphibians the Torians in first place! It rocketed me into the top 25!



This was a gigantic, everything abundant, very fast research, suicide game against 9 opponents. By May 2228 I had 474 out of 475 planets but I left the Altarians with one planet to extend the game. This allowed me to complete my queued up projects, build up my economy (e.g., max out my population), and build up my military. On Aug. 8, 2228 they succumbed to my influence so I reloaded the game to extend it further. An alien influence backlash event kept them from flipping again until I finally ended the game on Aug. 1, 2229. At game end I had 10.560 trillion tax payers and a fleet of 3963 dreadnoughts(huge hull) plus 36 destroyers(medium hull), costing me 135354 BC to maintain but still leaving me with a surplus of 107266 BC! If I was only interested in my maximizing my final score, upon completion of the tech tree, I would have built Industrial Sectors or Stock Exchanges over my NLCs but instead I continued to build NLCs on research bonus tiles, planets with rings, and my Tech Capital because my aim was to max out my empire's potential output. If I set research spending to 100%, my Tech Capital was outputting 6496, without any economic starbases!

My working theory is that the Yor abilities are great for winning the largest possible percentage of games against the AI, but they aren't anything special when it comes to achieving high scores. You don't get more points by slowing down the AI, you get them by doing things faster yourself. The Krynn bonuses, especially +50 morale, are better suited for this on smaller maps (and the Thalans/Torians/custom Super Breeders are better on larger maps).

Yeah, I'm not convinced the Yor are anything special, although I'd put them in the top half. However, there have been many threads that all seem to identify them as the top race. +20% miniturization and that starting tech suite is nice, but I would also take the Krynn over the Yor. Or the Korath. Even the Thalans are pretty close, if not outright better.

I'm sure there are a host of Yor games developing in the darkness of space. Here is the big chance to show they are overpowered, though. Closest we can come with no multiplayer.

Edit - And of course, only one race has failed to score, the Iconians. Maybe someone out there is putting together a 500k monster game with them, just to laugh at all of us. My guess before this thing even started was that they would score last, if at all.

The Krynn won my last tournament. And already they are showing their strength. Of course, I thought everyone thought it was the Yor who were overpowered...let's see if they can manage to be competitive.

I completed the DL campaign without losing any combat ships due to the first strike advantage present prior to DL 1.2 and back as a super ability in DA. In my 205000 suicide victory as the Torians I was playing DL 1.2 so the super abilities and Krynn were not a factor. Even without first strike I destroyed ~1500 and lost 15-20 because Attacker Advantages are Exploitable! The AI does not make good use of these advantages but first strike in the hands of a skilled human player is very powerful!

On the weekend I started a new non-metaverse DA 1.6 Beta 2 suicide game, with a medium map, common stars, occasional planets, abundant anomalies and asteroids, and since I don't care about my score I have all victory conditions set. I'm playing a custom super warrior race against the 6 AI players all set to Ultimate! I chose what I believe to be the 2 strongest from each ethical group: good (Altarian Resistance and Drath Legion), neutral (Thalan Empire and Torian Confederation), and evil (Drengin and Korath). In DL 1.2 the Torians were good and the Iconians neutral but I read a post from Brad that the Iconians are now good and somewhere else that the Torians are neutral. If the Torians where still good I would replace the Drath with them and have the Krynn take their spot as neutral. In past games I won at suicide by growing my population faster than the AI (more tax payers and troops) by keeping morale 100%, better planet development, and lighting attacks. So in this game I chose the super warrior ability (for first strike), speed +2, and 40% population growth. By Apr 1st I'm 2nd for population (behind the Torian Super Breeders) and 2nd for Social Production (behind the Thalan Hive) but far behind in everything else especial my economy (because my taxes are low). In this game I have tech trading disabled which helped me keep up with the AI in research in the early game and fund my deficit economy. I don't know what bonuses the AI gets at the new Ultimate setting but it appears to be large bonuses in all the key areas: military, social, research, economy, influence, etc. With the improvements to the AI in DA 1.6 (e.g., better planetary development) and the new bonuses at Ultimate, I don't know if I'm be able to win this game, especially given all the changes since DL 1.2 and playing on a map with far fewer planets. I may have to adapt my strategies. A challenge is always fun!
