Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Read this please

If you are having problems installing from the CD-ROMs, try copying the files from the CDs to your hard drive and then run the installation from your hard drive.  If you are having problems activating GalCiv2, please read this sticky post:

https://forums.galciv2.com/122873

If you have any other problems installing or activating GalCiv2 and you can't find an answer in a sticky post, please e-mail [email protected]

With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

For more troubleshooting tips, please read this sticky:

Hi, just installed Twilight via Steam. First time I loaded it I got sound and the opening cinematic, but the menu kept freezing and crashing my video driver. I updated the driver, but now I get no sound; the menu animations stop after less than a second; and I keep getting black screens, delays and video resets when trying to select menu options. I have tried changing the fullscreen setting and ensuring that resolution is set to my monitor/TV's native 1360 x 768.

What was the date on the previous driver you had? It's possible some new issue has been introduced recently, or that there's something peculiar about your config that's causing it to manifest. You might try rolling back to older drivers than you had previously, or using a different display if you have one available.

If you email [email protected], they should be able to assist in troubleshooting the issue further.

hi,

After a long read through this post, i could not find someone with the same debug.err file like i have.

From what i understand of rather large amount of debugg.err files and it's solution,

My game looks to run fine, but for some odd reason doesn't go past shell initialization.

A black window goes fullscreen, and goes away.

the original galciv works, and DA also, i'ts only TA that gives this problem.

-i edited all the pref.ini files with my resolution,

-it runs under xp service pack 3, administrator, and desktop composition disabled.

-tried disabling my second monitor.

note* bought it via steam, and have done a file integrity check, and it returned succesfull.

Thanks in advance

From what I've read in another thread, the compiler for GalCiv 2 only works in Windows XP. It seems that Stardock finds it a pain to go back to XP, so we might not be getting updates any time soon. Had things not been a pain, Frogboy said he would be tweaking the AIs in GalCiv 2. To him, programing AIs is a hobby.

Attempting to create D3DDevice at resolution 1920 x 1050

Other than your resolution being set to 1050 high instead of 1080 (typo?), it looks like you've already tried what we would have you do here. Please email [email protected] and they should be able to help investigate your problem in more detail.

Hello

My Name is Jon.

I am having issues with the game crashing when I try to log in to Metaverse to start a game.   I had similar issues when I ran Windows Vista, but I upgraded to windows 8 and now I no longer have any success at all after the login option.   The web browser works, but the game play does not.

I am running:  Windows 8 32-bit,  AMD Athlon X2 64, with ATI Radeon 3100, 3 GB Ram

if it is a 32 bit issue, I can try a reinstall with the 64-bit OS... they sent me both Discs and the system properties suggest that I have a 64-bit processor

Thanks for your help

Thanks Kryo,

I was able to play through a game and post to metaverse... can't say it was the best victory, but thanks again it appears to have worked.

ciao

Hope I can still get a response.

Every time I try to play the game the whole computer crashes. I've had this problem before, it was resolved by getting a cooling fan though. I started trying to play it again, and it is crashing the computer again. I heard there was a problem with letting GalCiv 2 not be the most recent game installed, so I uninstalled and reinstalled again. It lasts a different length every time, though, so I'm not sure what to do about it. Please help.

This time I was in the middle of starting the game.

Every time I try to play the game the whole computer crashes.

There are not any known issues that would cause the game itself to crash at the point your debug.err file ends (and you don't appear to have mods on), and if the whole system is going down that normally indicates you have a hardware or driver issue, but BSODs are turned off so the machine just turns off or reboots. Other than trying something like running on AC if you're trying to play on battery, you'll need to enable BSODs to get some idea of what is wrong:

To have your computer display BSODs instead of rebooting immediately, go to Computer Properties->Advanced System Settings->Startup and Recovery Settings and uncheck 'automatically restart'.

The next time it crashes, you may get a BSOD similar to the one below (not all highlighted parts may be present):

Write down the information in the highlighted areas before turning your computer off. The information there can then be researched online to see if others have experienced similar problems, and what the cause was. You may also get a 'windows has recovered from a serious error' message when you turn your computer back on--if you do this, you should agree to send the report to microsoft. You'll then be forwarded to information about that error on Microsoft's knowledgebase, if they have any.

Gotta say its impressive people still get support for this game.
