Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Read this please

If you are having problems installing from the CD-ROMs, try copying the files from the CDs to your hard drive and then run the installation from your hard drive.  If you are having problems activating GalCiv2, please read this sticky post:

https://forums.galciv2.com/122873

If you have any other problems installing or activating GalCiv2 and you can't find an answer in a sticky post, please e-mail [email protected]

With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

For more troubleshooting tips, please read this sticky:

Definitely update the game to current, and your video drivers as well. The game cannot work reliably with video drivers older than it is (yours are from 2004).

I have been having random black screen freezes which frequently seem to resolve themselves and the game continues after about 30 secs, it is getting really annoying though and always crashes completely after a while sometimes taking the Os down too.  I have tried runing it on a virtual xp machine and that is a lot more stable but still crashes randomly.

This is the debug from my most recent session where i was trying running it windowed directly under vista.

I don't know if it's significant or not but in the debug under Display 1 it lists the display memory as being 1011mb even though the card only has 256mb... I assume this is correct and the extra is additional virtual memory, please advise.

I have been testing the hypothesis that the D3DERR_DEVICELOST error is related to overheating today but have found that the GPU temp is stable at ~54C if not lower still constantly freezing and/or crashing.

I might also mention that recent releases ie Fallout New Vegas and Natural Selection 2 beta are running without these issues.

Emailing [email protected] is always the best bet for guaranteed support. Forum posts can sometimes get lost or overlooked.

Driver resets are generally indicative of an issue with the driver itself; if windows is crashing completely, you're likely getting a suppressed BSOD which would definitely indicate that or a hardware issue at fault. If there are no newer drivers available, you may try rolling back to somewhat older ones.

I'm having a problem with the ships in the game. Theres a small screen in the pick your civilization page which has a small model of a colony ship rotating. The ship though is usually missing half its body or entirely dissapeard. This is the same in the shipyard, therefore preventing me from designing my own ship. Here is my debug.err log:

If it's something to do with drivers being out of date or anything else, I'm not good with computer tech so step by step instructions would help.

Can you post a screenshot so we can see exactly what you're describing?

Not sure where you're getting that idea from. I haven't gone anywhere.

I'm in day 6 of not receiving a response to my support ticket, you hadnt been active for 2 months, and Frogboy stated there wont be any further updates beyond small tweeks he can make when free time allows..abandoned might be to strong a word but its close to the status quo.

Guitar, Just how did you make that video and get it posted on the forum, I'm interested in making one about the autohotkey.

Your problem looks like a graphic card but then again I would try reinstalling the game. Good luck!

The activity stat on the profile page is broken--I'm still here every day, posting as often as I see anyone that needs help and hasn't already been answered. Assuming the replies link appears on the profile page for non-moderators, that may be more useful.

As to your support ticket, have you received the auto-response with the ticket number? If so, what was it? I'm not support, but I can ask them to check the status of your ticket. Please also bear in mind that support only addresses tickets during normal business hours Mon-Fri. Additionally, if you have sent additional emails since the first, doing that will reset the ticket's place in the queue and delay any response.

I've uploaded a video on youtube..

That's actually even better since it shows portions winking in and out as it rotates.

There are a couple of things you can try. First, if Enhanced Ship Rendering is on in the options, try disabling that and restarting the game. If that does not help, you might try experimenting with the other video toggles in the options, but that's the one most likely to cause such behavior with integrated video.

Failing that, this should be the correct latest driver for your system. You should just need to download, install, and reboot.

If the problem still persists with any combination of video options and the newer driver, please contact [email protected] and they should be able to help troubleshoot the issue further.

problem solved :D. turns out it was the disable point sprites option. Not sure what it means but it wasnt ticked and when i ticked and restarted the game i could see the ships (i checked all places just in case). Thanks for the help kryo, wouldnt have enjoyed playin this game without u suggestin it. I actually genuinely never thought of messin round with those options, never crossed my mind  . Cheers!!

Update :: Impulse updated my account today and I was able to download off Impulse..8 day response time to hear from a tech is unacceptable in any circumstance. Even VA caseworkers get back to you in 1-2 days and government workers set the bottom bar in customer service.

How did you make the video? Was it a program? Like a Ctr + screen saver to take a photo of the screen.

I am glad you solved your problem and I will have to remember that too!

ok I have a new problem now and this time its with Dark Avatar. I'll post another video to show the problem. This time its in the map. My ships appear but the other ships dont appear. Even during a battle and when I click done in the battle scene the game crashes.

Is it just that save or does this occur regularly? If it doesn't, it may be that save or some ship designs got corrupted.

I think its a problem with the save. I started a new game with everyone against me to encourage them to make a fleet of escorts as in the video and (after a while of waiting and a few new games later) the krynn made the same kinda fleet but i could see them. thanks for responding so fast though.

Since updating to the most recent patch I have been experiencing the lack of AI expansion refered to in several posts on these forums. Certain AIS handle their tech much better than others. The Terrans in particular seem to expand extremely well while the Dregin, Torian and Yor do not.

I noticed that the last update was in 2009. Is there any plans to address these known issues ?
