Release: A new GalCiv2 map editor

Release: A new GalCiv2 map editor

Hi everyone,

I'd like to announce that I have been working on a map editor for Galciv2, and I finally gotten it to a point where I feel comfortable releasing it.

It has a few features that I think you will especially enjoy, such as a full 3D display, and it allows you to easily click and drag objects on the map. At the moment, it is missing a few features, most notably an automatic generator for maps, but I hope to have it available soon.

You must have .NET 2.0 and Galactic Civilizations 2 installed in order to run this program.

The program can be downloaded from Sourceforge

It can also be found at the Galactic Core website, but the version on that site has not been updated recently.

So you tried the galciv2ide? Did the available modules run properly?

No, sorry I haven't. I haven't had much time to...
Hmm, actually I don't have a clue at the moment. Only thing I noticed you are running a quite "old" video driver dated 10/2006.
May be try to update your video driver.
Debug.err says nothing exceptional, because the 3d device and display got initialized properly, otherwise it would write an error message.
What type of map(name,dl/da) did you try to open, the problem occurrs when creating a new map as well you said?
Unfortunately I'm no hardware guru, so it might take a while to fix your problem
Reply #103 Top
ok i tried to open a DA map a DL map and a new map same thing

I`ll try driver again the newer ones said it could not find drivers or a card

so I`ll try again on them

Did you alter any original gamefiles(eg. GC2Ship.xml, raceconfig.xml)?
The GalCiv2IDE requires untouched original gamefiles, since it reads the needed xml files on mapeditor startup.
If that's the case, I suggest you should get the original files back in place.
I'm currently working on mod support, however it won't alter the above requirement.
no i did not not alter any original gamefiles but have allot of mods i use

up dated to 94.24 release date may 31 2007

but i can open Campaigns and Scenarios just not maps??? my maps files open with note pad as default could that be it ???

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

It'd would be nice if any bugreports go into the GlaCivIDE stickied thread...

However, I googled for the HRESULT 0x8007007E error message.
The supposed solution is, to download WWW Link dx websetup and all should be fine.

I downloaded GalCiv2IDE 1.0.7 and have Windows XP, Net 2.0 and updated directX and a windows error everytime I run the program.

EDIT: Disregard. I first tried it on my desktop which at the moment didn't have GC2 installed. I guess that was it because it ran fine on my laptop which does have GC2 installed. Thanks for this, I finally can edit maps

I downloaded this from sourceforge. and downloaded .net 2.0 from microsoft and have GC2 gold edition with dark avatar and when i unzip the file I can see any instructions on how to install the editor and there is no executable file.

So the question I have is what am I doing wrong?
CAN YOU DOWNLOAD ANYTHING WITHOUT WINZIP???

unfortunately no you`ll need winzip or winrar or something that handles zip files

There are two files that can be downloaded. One is the source code, and the other has an installer. Did you download the source code instead of the installer? This file should work for you. If you wish to try compiling from source instead, you will need Visual Studio Express C# and the directx SDK (I believe that this was developed with the feb 2007 SDK, but I don't think there should be any problem using a newer one). With those installed, you should be able to open up the project file and build it from there.

However, I would like to point out that there hasn't been much in the way of development for quite some time now, and I'm not really intending to start up again on this. While I haven't used Galciv2IDE, my understanding is that it is currently more advanced and usable than my editor is. In addition, Galciv2IDE can make DA maps, which is not something that this editor supports. At this point in time, you are likely going to be better off using that editor instead of this one.

Please Include a readme with your mods in the future, with simple directions for getting the app to run, for those of us who are inexpirienced with these things.

What actual application in "Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Framework" or ".NET 2.0" as you call it, is used to run the map editor?

nevermind my last post i had the "source" file and was wondering wtf then i went back and sow the installer file.. my bad
Reply #116 Top

UGH! What the hell do I do to install it or do ANYTHING with it!!!??????? Why would someone spend all that work making something for people and than not provide instructions for people to understand how to use it?????????????????????

"there's an installer"

What damn installer dude????? I see nothing like that anywhere!!!!

On top of that .BET 2 failed to install completely, all versions i tried to install failed. WHY DOES THIS COMPANY WANT ME TO WASTE SO MUCH OF MY TIME???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This is a free user-created tool, from 2006. There is an official map editor included in newer versions of the game.

Created to waste peoples life? The "official" galciv game is a complete failure anyway, http://steamcommunity.com/app/214150

No matter what it seems stardock is a lose-lose situation.

How does any sort of accredited company fail this badly? It's like an electronic version of the BP oil spill, just a complete disaster.

That is the GalCiv1 page (this editor and forum are for GalCiv2), and a few support issues (most easily solved config issues if they contact us, rather than posting on a third party user-discussion board) over a years time on a game ten years old is hardly a sign of 'complete failure'.

If you have a particular technical problem with the game, the appropriate course of action is to contact our support (which you have already done). They should be able to solve whatever technical issue you have. Insults won't solve anything.

Please update your support case with any additional information and we'll look at it.  Also, please note that the forum you linked most recent posts are from six months ago and may not be applicable any longer.

Thanks.
