Release: A new GalCiv2 map editor

Release: A new GalCiv2 map editor

Hi everyone,

I'd like to announce that I have been working on a map editor for Galciv2, and I finally gotten it to a point where I feel comfortable releasing it.

It has a few features that I think you will especially enjoy, such as a full 3D display, and it allows you to easily click and drag objects on the map. At the moment, it is missing a few features, most notably an automatic generator for maps, but I hope to have it available soon.

You must have .NET 2.0 and Galactic Civilizations 2 installed in order to run this program.

The program can be downloaded from Sourceforge

It can also be found at the Galactic Core website, but the version on that site has not been updated recently.

Do you have .NET 2.0 installed? If not, you can get it from microsoft. If not, any other information you can give would be very helpful, since I have not personally experienced this problem.

Hi everyone. Sorry that there hasn't been an update for so long. I've been pretty bogged down with school and a few other projects I'm working on. Progress is still plodding along on mod support, plus a few other changes I'm throwing into the mix. I can't say with any degree of certainty when the next update will be. I have thanksgiving week off, so I may be able to get it done then. After that, I plan on adding scenario and campaign editors into the mix.

By the way, between the galactic core and sourceforge, the project has now passed 1000 downloads. It is great to see that there is still such a strong mod community. If you guys have any suggestions, problems, or plain old comments, feel free to send them my way.

PS.
Dimzy. If you are still having problems, send me an email at [email protected], and I'll try to help you get it running. There's almost no chance that I'll have time to help you this week, but I should be able to help you out early next week or this weekend.

same thing here. The problem is that the Map Editor supposes that we installed GalCiv2 in the default directory, which is not my case either.

Any fix ?

Had a problem loading maps made with this program. GCII kept crashing when starting a game with the map. Found out that the planets all said they belonged to the wrong stars or only a few stars having all the planets associated to them. I had to open the map in wordpad and and tell them which star they belonged too. Is there any way to do this when I first make the map? So i don't have to go through and change the woring on 78+ planets.

Oh and I'm having problems editing maps I made, the program wont let me edit a planet that's already placed on the map. I found a work around that takes too long. I have to start a new map. Place a new planet and then try to edit it right afterwards and then I might be able to or not. I have to do it like three times for it to work and then I can edit a map I already had.

I'd really like to be able to place a star and have the program ask how many planets to place around the star. I keep putting planets either too far or too close to the star. Is there a distance the planets shold be away frot he star?

I have the exact same problem.

mmmh! the download and installation was very simple and easy; although it is very basic and very "simple", ONE important feature is missing from that little programm: a DELETE or UNDO button as if you make a mistake or wanted to remove a planet/star..you CAN'T !

I agree with Shiva: a bigger then gigantic (18x18) will be very nice...but not primordial.

ONE thing I will love to see in this editor is a PLANET bonus control; to be able to put, let's say all homeworld with a number of specific % of bonus (research, manufacturing etc )

anyhow, thank you for the program, and have a peechee day!

Unfortunately that's just not possible--the custom map format used by the game has no way to define that.

Thanks Kryo for this answer, but it's OK: after having spent lot's of time creating 2 superb gigantic maps...I can't play them as the game keep on crashing whatever mods, tweak, configuration or voodoo dance dressed as a chicken I do....so I guess I will simply delete the whole thing and wait for a stable version of the editor.

When i try to open it, it says my version of .net framework is out of date. I have 2.0, but it says i need 2.something?
How do i solve this
sorry, I downloaded the firmware, and it works. Now when I try to open it, it asks for a directory to put it in and i don't know where to put it...

same thing here.

You can edit or delete a planet, a star, and a resorce by clicking the right mouse botton on what you want to edit

My only question is when/if it's going to be updated to make maps for DA sense you know, that's the latest and greatest and all

Hold the right mouse button down to drag the map. Center button to rotate and wheel to zoom.

I've already given the solution, but you're going to spend a lot of time typing... Read below.

Csn't run it but can install it too much hassl it sais i need a version 2. something or other of something when i went to open or run the program editor stupid game y is it sooo annoying ??

I initially had trouble running the program. I looked in the "C:\Program Files\Galciv2 Map Editor" folder and edited the "Galactic Civilizations Map Editor.exe.config" file to point to my Galciv2 folder, and all went well after that.

The other difficulty I had with the program was the planet mapping and assigning. What I ended up doing was to use the other map editor available (GC2Builder) to lay out the stars and planets where I want them, and then go back and tweak the settings in this editor. The other editor allows the user to create stars, planets, and solar systems (stars with planets assigned to them). I don't think it can move any of the items though. I also seemed to have an issue with GC2Builder creating the map upside down. Of course, it could have been me. It was really late.

I hope this helps.
