Release: A new GalCiv2 map editor

Hi everyone,

I'd like to announce that I have been working on a map editor for Galciv2, and I finally gotten it to a point where I feel comfortable releasing it.

It has a few features that I think you will especially enjoy, such as a full 3D display, and it allows you to easily click and drag objects on the map. At the moment, it is missing a few features, most notably an automatic generator for maps, but I hope to have it available soon.

You must have .NET 2.0 and Galactic Civilizations 2 installed in order to run this program.

The program can be downloaded from Sourceforge

It can also be found at the Galactic Core website, but the version on that site has not been updated recently.

for some reason I can't open the file I already install it any ideas?

What exactly is happening when you try to open it? Are you getting an error message?

Also, .NET 2.0 is required. Do you have that installed?

yes I do, and when I press it nothing is showing up, like a dead shortcut

Try opening up the file directly from where you installed it, hopefully the shortcut is where the problem is at.

If you want, you can go ahead and IM me. My AIM screen name is ricree101. I'd love to get this problem out of the way.

Seconded, install seems to go smoothly but when I try to run I get an error message (the "Send Error Report" dialogue).

Ok. I'm going rewrite a few things to give better error reporting. I've only tried this on two computers, and neither had a problem. I'll try to have something up as soon as possible. The only other thing I can think of to check is to see if your directx is up to date.

I know direct x is up to date. I'd send you an error report, but it wont let me copy past the report

Tried it. It also gives an error report box. I checked the details and it says it's a file not found exception. does it need any files that the installer may not create proporly? Or Maybe you're using a relative file path that would work where you installed it, but others may not have (if you reference a file or two from the galciv install.. not sure). just throwing ideas out there.

Ok, I uploaded a new version of the installer. Run the uninstaller, install the new version. Uninstall it again. Then reinstall it. The first thing you should see after you run it the first time is a dialog box asking you to select your Galciv 2 directory. Once you have selected this, everything should hopefully run fine. If not, there will now be an error.txt file in the install directory, which should hopefully shed some light on where the problem is.

Once again, here is the link:

Thanks for your patience everyone. Sorry that I didn't have it working from the start. With any luck, it should be up and running quickly.

PS for CHAORAIN:
No, this is completely unofficial. I'm not affiliated with Stardock in any way.

Oh man, I'm really batting 1000 today, aren't I. Try it again, it should work now.

Okay.. The zip worked. I didn't get the dialog asking for my galciv path. I just got an unhandled exception. ther error file was generated, and says false galciv2 directory. I went into the preferences file and changed the path from default galciv path to where I installed it. Still gives me the same error and error file (excpet the "false galciv directory" is the one I changed it to. I'll play around with it some more.

Any chance we could do this over IM or something, so that the back and forth goes a bit quicker?

Sorry.. read the error file wrong ... I was using notepad to view it.. and it doesn't print line breaks correctly. What it actually says is,
Program opened : false
then the galciv directory
then the important part "could not create new map"

I checked write permissions.. and my dir's are both read and write enabled.

yeah... is there a PM functionality in this forum... I don't visit very often. I don't want to put my MSN or e-mail over the forum

We could go to one of the stardock central chat rooms. the #SDCentral is usually pretty empty.

Thanks a lot for working on a map editor. It is the one major item this game is missing. Good luck.

Cheers

OK, as of right now it seems to be working.

Once again, the file can be downloaded from: Link

At the moment, it is located on a geocities account and is a bit over 2MB, so I can't guarantee it will always be up. I'll try to put it somewhere better ASAP.

Go to the Galactic Core website (www.thegalacticcore.com) and post there and ask JJ if he would host your file. He has a MOD section on the server that can handle the file.

Is this sponsered by stardock?

No, but then neither was the last one made by a player. If he can get the bugs fixed so it works for everyone though, I will sticky the thread and take down the old one so people can see it and use it.

Animal--it'd be great if you edited the original post here to have a more specific title and more information (requirements, up to date donwload link, support info) before I sticky it.

Is this working for everyone now? Neb was able to get it running last night, but I want to make sure that it is running for everyone.
