Depending on your definition of "elite" Republicans fit it too. McCain came from 2 generations of Admirals... Got a free ride to the Naval Academy (which he couldn't have gotten into by competitive selection). Was in the bottom 10 (not 10%, but 10 people) of his class but still got chosen to be an elite fighter pilot, which again he could never have gotten by his merit.
