Brad I think you (Stardock) are partly to blame for this lack of innovation. Most of the skins these days are created with your 'widgets' and just coloured. Perhaps it's all a little too easy to 'create' a bland, minimalistic skin.

Oh you gotta laugh. You say that so far they are basically only colour changes to the original XP themes..... If you click on that category, top left here, the one for XP Skins, what do you get ? Oh look 10 themes with different colours but all looking like the original XP skins..... Oh please... The thing with StyleXP is you can change EVERY single piece of graphic in XP...... Like to see it done with WB.....
Everyone here makes a big hoohaa when a skin gets ripped so could someone stop mcs2k1 from ripping news from other sites like NeoWin, Wxperience, Anandtech, WinOSCentral etc and posting them word for word. Firstly they are not his posts and secondly and more annoyingly they have nothing to do with skinning. If I want this sort of news I'll go to the above sites and the rest, which I do, which is how I know he's copying and pasting them !!!
Sorta like a skinning FAQ, brief history, what it's all about and what the most popular programs are, what they do and where you can find/buy them.... Seems to me a LOT of the messages on the board are from newb's asking the same sort of questions..... As the sites attracting huge amounts of new people every day it might make sense...... Any thoughts.....
I started off on a 286 at 8mhz with a 5mb HD, that was the business back then, then I got a 15mb HD and 8Mb RAM put in it and it felt awesome at the time. About 6 months later we got our first 386 with VGA, that machine was the centre of my world for about 9 months........ Anyways at present I've got a 550 Athlon O/C to 650mhz with 768Mb RAM, Geforce 2 MX 400 and SB Live Platinum. It's not too shabby I suppose BUT I'm getting a 1.4Ghz Athlon, with 768Mb DDR RAM at the weekend to upgrad
MiserME http://www.xs4all.nl/~noto/wxperience/blackcomb/Blackcomb.zip it's a 4.9meg download and lasts about 5 minutes, it's obviously an internal MS briefing and gives a little insight into the way things are gonna go.... Downhill rapidly I'd say
Thats NOT THE ISSUE !!!
.....but if they've downloaded 50 megs over the course of months, obviously they need to register it or stop using it (or at least stop using the bandwidth here). If "nagging" people who pirate software and then download megs of skins for the pirated programs causes some of them to leave, that's an acceptable solution because fewer people is fine. But if all that fails, I don't understand why someone would object to trying to stop people who are pirating our software and downlo
Oh and the subscription thing would require a much more rigorous moderation of skins. I've stopped coming here simply because of all the shit thats getting up....... Sorry but it is ! I wouldn't pay a subscription with all the half assed skins that are getting through.....
Froggy - seems strange to me you can come up with a way to please Microsoft and their allies/enemies for desktop space yet you find it so difficult with this site. I've changed my mind, I was completely opposed to subscription etc but why not. Free 2 meg downloads per month or something for any user. Pay by credit card or whatever any amount you like then each section has a price per skin corresponding to bandwidth usage so Desktop X themes would be say 50c each while Winamp or Coolplay
Paxx, the Win2K compatibility relies on Microsoft releasing app compatibility hotfixes, I'm sure you've seen the list and download. In XP it's built right in and works like a dream, you can choose which version of Win to run the app as, see the other Upgrade ?? thread....
Oh Paxx, you are a stuborn one aren't you Yep, system restore is hugely improved and makes no performance hit at all AND the major thing now is you can delete all restore points except the latest one, recovering a large amount of disc space. OK, the built in CD burining is way better than Direct CD. No formatting, no special eject commands, no finalizing the disc. It's virtually identical t
Yeah, I've seen the video and the customisation features etc are superb/amazing, don't like the idea of paying 99c a month to have a linked calendar and stuff but that's how it's gonna be when .NET takes over It looks a lot like the liquid/biomechanical type of affair I've mentioned at times........
Well, I got RC1 about a week ago and put it straight over 2K Pro. I will be upgrading if my crack doesn't work that long ..... Anyway, to be honest I think XP is to 2k as ME is to 98. ie, not that much difference on the surface but when you go back you miss all those little extra's they put in. One of the major things for me is the integrated CD burning, works like a dream and is a god send when you
Great little game, love the animation, some of the best I've seen......
Still haven't managed to try XP BUT I have got Media Player 8 RC1 running on Win2K and it's fantastic compared to the sloth that is 7.1. It's fast, good looking and doesn't crash at every opportunity it gets. Well worth getting if you have 2K and hate 7.1's complete bloated uselessness. www.winoscentral.com in the downloads section under MP3.
www.theregister.com has good info..... it's an extremely virulent virus and is causing major havoc.... it's even made national news in the UK
Same here, when running WindowBlinds, WindowFX and OB on Win 2K. Have tried running each seperately and even if I run windowBlinds after everything, manually, the buttons don't work 9 times out of ten. This is the same for WB on it's own..... clean boot..... System: Win2K Geforce 2 MX Creative 12.9(? Brand new from WinDrivers) Drivers 458Mb RAM Also noticed that it takes about 40 secs to load WB now on 2K and it slows everything quite considerably. I have tried MSWH
AJ, nay chance you could come and 'MAKE' Tony Hawks work on Win 2K for me coz buggered if I can get it going..... And I decided against a dual boot Only game I really enjoy playing as well.
I'm not sure if those are negative comments but I would just like to say I have been going to Bob's site for ages. It is mainly an emulation site for Amiga / Mac progs to run on PC. The skins are more of an additional thing. Allowing you to customize your PC in the style of your fave 'old' system......
That shadow under the icons and icon text looks nice tho.........
