The 15bc or so trade bonus that is declared when you set up your trade route is just the initial value of that trade route. This value increases dramitcally dependant on how far away your trading partner is. After establishing a trade route and letting your mini-freighter move about halfway to its destination go to the trad screen and look at how much its pulling in....you should see that its dramatically higher and gets higher the closer to its destination it gets. It really depends on how much you want to micromanage Robert. I prefer to use the govs and just build the same stuff on a majority of my planets in the same order and then save the micromanaging for a select few. My thought has always been that you cannot have too many PQ improvements or morale improvements built on a planet, as they both ultimately result in a higher population capacity for that planet and thus a higher production/research capacity. I also use a very similar strategy and still find the game quite challenging. there have been quite a few games where I wasn't able to keep my "paper tiger" military built up high enough and was attacked and shreaded. Resulted in myself being more conscious of diplomacy as I have found some races will attack you even if you have a higher military rating than them. Another interesting trick is to use your mass drivers and core detonation with small numbers of soldiers initially so that you'll significantly reduce the defenders without damaging the planet. Boy I hate to back up this Vasueden guy but we do have a common dislike of GROSS so here goes. Of the last 3 games of the Top 7 citizens in the #1 GROSS empire; 5 were at crippling and above, 11 were between normal and crippling, while 5 were below normal in difficulty. Yes some people have yet to grasp the difference between fun and challenging.
