I have had great enjoyment playing SE4. I loved the ability to build Ring- and Sphereworlds around stars. When playing at maximum difficulty the AI could be quite difficult altough never impossible. The ability to design ships was actually very interesting and made all the difference. When playing-by-mail some of the ships devised by your human opponent were great fun. Kamikaze fleets on your starbases and whatnot. The AI is not that inventive. The micromanagment could get very annoying, but

I was wondering if Galciv has the possiblility of capturing and perhaps analyzing enemy ships ? I recall that when things went all pear-shaped in SE4 I generally switched to a Borg-like approach, build a small specialized task force and captured some of the AI's isloated high-tech ships. Then pushed the AI's tech back down its throat. Very effective and enjoyable. :)
My personal favourite (and I wonder if Galciv can beat this ?) is the holy Sid's Alpha Centauri. I always return to it like an old friend (or a bad habit ?). Playing it right now as a matter of fact :)
So if I pre-order GC now at Amazon will I also get the bonus pack ? I will have major trouble waiting for the release (and 4 week delivery), especially since I keep reading about all these beta-players having marvellous fun. Just my luck I am too late with pre-ordering :( Can't you guys release the demo ? I don't mind the bugs.
