Until this day I have only run Linux on old outdated hardware, primarily for experimenation or for server use. But today I decided to install it on an old but relatively speedy laptop to test the desktop experience. The laptop has a 2Ghz P4 processor, 512MB of ram and a 32MB ATI card. Installing Ubuntu on older hardware before have been difficult so I was a bit weary

I don't get to play very much. I do alright when I can get a good map. I started out with the original game on OS/2. Looking at the GalCiv forum (the NNTP based one), I see a few posts for 2005, none for 2006. To move with the community seems like a compelling reason to switch to the new game. Is there anybody out there who wished they had stayed with the ori
My turn button turns green most of the time but not always. I second (eh, third?) that it is not working 100%.
Seems like a bug to me. I guess that I will have to monitor my debug.err for the next games to ensure that I am on the right AI level.
Yesterday I played a small galaxy on the Challenging difficulty level. It was a decent game, a bit too easy but still fun. The planets were fairly evenly spread and most races had two planets. Today I decided to up the difficulty a notch, from Challenging to Tough. According to the GalcivII Wiki this should be one up from Challenging. I had some problems getting a decent start so I CTRL-N a few times to ensure that we all got about two planets each, not enough so someone should be too f
I also experience the confused graphics syndrome. The Tranport ship graphics changed to freighter, and the constructor graphic changed to something else. Somewhat confused things in my midgame.
Congratulations! Glad to hear it!
This brings back memories. I really miss Control Center (the right side bar). Is it replaced by ObjectBar now?
You people are lucky. I abandonded my DL campaign several times after DL ships in the middle of game decided they need some ship defendes and got 16-50 in defense which made it game over for me. P.S. Normally, onlt tiny ships win against DL, but if they put defenses it *is* game over regardless what you have. I have this problem as w
Dark-Star, Thank you for the CTRL+F5 tip for Firefox, it was all looking distorted before that. Now it looks really, really excellent. Now I just miss RSS integration. Great work!
Worked surprisingly well on my old laptop which has seen lots of software installed and uninstalled for the last two years. The speed of Explorer was noticeably improved!
No problem! Good luck to you! I will keep my fingers crossed!
I have an old Asus notbook with 512MB of memory and a 32MB ATI graphics card and it works fine. Can't run on the highest settings but that is fine by me. Don't need all the bells and whistles to enjoy this game! Carielf pointed me to some newer ATI drivers as the ones I had were to old. But after that, everything has worked smoothly.
I often forget to play metaverse games instead of normal games. It is quite annoying since I like using the metaverse to keep track of my games. I have a hard to remembering it since all games in Galciv I was metaverse games. Is there any possibility of converting an ongoing normal game to a metaverse game? I have fiddled with the game at all, it is just a plain vanilla 1.1 installation? Best regards
Excellent! Thanks!
I purchased a copy of Desktop Pet for a friend and would like to distribute the update to her. (I am not using it myself). Preferrably without having to guide her through the installation of Stardock Central as she is not very technical. I tried to download and archive the application but that created a zip-file that seemed to require SDC for installation.
Finally I have had some time to really play the game and I must drop a note and say that it is awesome! I have played GC since the second version on OS/2 but this is probably the best strategy game I have played sofar! I had some concerns during the beta test about it being tedious using the ship design feature and managing the planet tiles but those doubts were completely unfounded! I was completely wrong. Even if I don't spend any time de
Thank you for all your replies! I can see their use now. Now I will change my strategy and give those Drengins what they deserve.
I have played a few games now and haven't quite understood how engines works in battle. Is it worthwile to have a faster ship in battles? In my latest game I got pounded by the Drengin who had more guns instead of engines. So, how do engines work? Are they beneficial in battle? Are they required at all? I haven't tried to create ships without them.
For some strange reason, everytime I run and play GalcivII my builtin Synaptics Touchpad crashes. Not instantaneously, but usually within five minutes. I have only tried to run Galciv in a window. Don't know how it fares in full screen mode. But I prefer windowed mode since I still have access to ICQ/MSN then. Any ideas? I have a fairly low end laptop with a 32MB ATI video card, 512MB memory and a P4 2.0Ghz processor.
XP here too. ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. Yeah I know it's old! Then again I have only played one complete game and it did not last that long, three hours or so. Yo got the latest drivers? I couldn't even get the game to run until CariElf pointed me to some drivers that worked on my laptop but were not officially supported by Asus or ATI.
Once we have all the assets in, the team will be taking a few days out to designs TONS of ships that both the AI and the human player will automatically have at their disposal. If you want to tweak them, you'll have that ability, but our plan is to have enough pre-made designs so players that don't want to mass with ship design
Citizen CeZeus wrote: Let me say this: GalCiv II is a superior strategy game to GalCiv I. Hands down. The planet stuff in GalCiv I was a pointless. The planet quality was the only thing that mattered. They would have been better off not having any planetary "improvement" and just had the planet quality determine everything a
I very, very, very strongly disagree, utterly & completely with Jelvis. The shipyard and the ability to custom design ships is what I rate as the best feature of this game. I can't get through the tech tree fast enough to add more components to them. Hell, I can safely say I have spent more time at the shipyard than I have in the
I am not easily offended and your question is relevant. But if you follow your own reasoning that would imply that the previous Galactic Civilization game was less about strategy? And the Civilization line of games? If you want to micromanage your planets fine, but I don't really see the need. If you want a research planet or a production planet it is better handled by governors so you don't have to do the labour yourself. It is just tedious
