CPU usage depends a lot on what objects you have on the desktop, whether they use alpha blending and also whether they are animated. It alos depends on whether your CPU is doing all the hard work or if it can offload some of it to the GPU (ie it has hardware acceleration for alpha) for per pixel alpha. I'm on an Athlon XP 1700+ with a Radeon 8500 and DX is stable at about 8-9% CPU when using ThredzX which has a fair bit of animation and alpha blending.

Mandrake 8.2 I believe. It was the only distro that had support for my Speedtouch USB Modem in the kernel. I really didn't fancy messing about with recompiling the kernel as my first task. Also has support for my WinTV card. With VMWare and XP I can use PSP instead of the Gimp which I just can't brng myself to use. And VNC means I can attach to it from almost any machine with a web browser and java support (although I can do that with XP too).

One main reason for going the linux way is cost. I work for a university and most of the students only use the computers in the labs for Email, Internet and word processing for their assignements. If those machines could have Linux with Star Office or something similar instead of Windows NT, 2K, XP or whatever windows incarnation we are on it would save a lot of money. As the university is investigating the possibility of this I have installed Linux at home (Mandrake Distro) to find o

This sounds like incorrect DLL's or something to me. Have you tried removing and reinstalling component manager? If possible drop into stardocks irc irc.stardock.com channel is #stardock. Then you can talk in realtime to the developers and maybe sort something out there and then.

You could always explain what you are doing and send him a screeny of the redone images and see what he says. It's always best to go to the source when dealing in these matters.

/me remembers starting a hud look theme in DesktopX. Was that you who suggested it at skinz.org? That green hud idea was what inspired Minimalism 2000. Not green but could have been. Not sure if I still have the images or not for the original one as I think my hard disk died after starting it.

Personally I avoid cut down versions of software and usually avoid nag screens. Convenience of paying for a piece of software is the main reason I buy a specific piece of software. I live in the UK and have no Credit Card. My Dad has one which he lets me use very occasionally. (Usually once a year to pay Stardock ) If I had a credit card I probably would buy a lot more. I can use my debit card for most sof

I have to say that making Gilla colorisable would not have worked adequately with WB the way it was when the skin or the contest were started. WB did not apply colorisation to the [colours] section correctly until very recently (and as far as I know still has some issues). I have no doubt if WB supported it correctly that malform would have included that feature (since he asked me about the very same subject). To me I prefer a skin to look nice than to have lots of features (Of course if it h

What graphics card? It's most likely display drivers. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q235618 has info on it. Try changing back to standard VGA and see if that fixes it. If it does then you need to change your drivers. Either upgrade to the most recent or downgrade to the last official non-beta release of the drivers.

The problem is that you usually comment after you have downloaded the skin and run it for a bit. How can you comment on a skin or theme until you have tried it? And once you have downloaded and tried it for a bit you are less likely to go back and comment.
