Preordering was not necessary. You do not get it any sooner. You do not get it any cheaper. I was just a big come-on with a bait and switch (preorder and get a beta copy). If nobody was given access to a beta, then it would be a little more acceptable, but a beta was made available to random people, many who did not preorder.
