A lot of this has been said before but having a huge post like this seems to get attention. A good comprehensive list of things that should have been changed long before release.

Great overview of the major problems with combat, economics and other game mechanics.

Pretty good summary of what went awfully wrong with Elemental, especially considering all the issues listed here have been brought up numerous times in the beta and had very reasonable fixes suggested, like you mention.
