noobie q: how do I colonize a planet? in Sins of a Solar Empire Sins Forums

ok... stupid question... i just bought the game and played the tutorials. I started on a small map against the AI, and took the Advent race. i can't seem to figure out how to colonize planets - I recall being able to do this through the capital ship - I've already built my 1st free capital ship, yet i can't seem to colonize neighbouring planets.. what am i missing here? also, can i colonize asteroid fields.. where there are no planets within, but the field is rich with minerals a
