It is a bit of a space grunt book, but I recently picked up 'Old Man's War' from John Scalzi and enjoyed it. Fun, light, military sci-fi reading. Perfect for those vacation jaunts.

I'd also suggest the Combat Mission series (http://www.battlefront.com/). They are simply fantastic tactical wargames. They also have a sci-fi genre game, but I heard that was quite mediocre.
There are a couple of things I'd really like to be changed about the United Planets: 1. The week (or more) before the voting, it would be announced what is going to be voted on.
This is a big factor on how the UP operates that chafes me. I hope that there will be an option to use espionage on the UP in future patches. The result would be (depending on the expenditure and time) reports announcing the agenda of the annual UP meeting a month or more (or less depen
To expand on the good comments the previous posters have made, Elanthra007, early in the game you may want to keep 2 types of constructors in your shipyard. One is a very fast, long range (add extra life support), expensive unit for claiming resources. The other is a cheap, slow unit (it may need extra life support modules) used for upgrading established bases. As the game progresses, you can stop production on the fast, expensive constructor as unclaimed resources have likely been gobbled up
Hopefully never - he said selfishly. I don't and would never play this type of game MP, and any time spent designing, developing, or supporting MP would take away from the SP game, something I'd never want to see happen. I see quite a few comments like this when bringing up a multiplayer option. I can understand the position of staunchly standing by keeping the game only single player. It does help focus the development. But I think employing some typ
I wish the research tree for farming could be expanded a bit more. Due to the limitations of population and morale, it seems like a limited affair to research. I'd love some of the higher techs to add a small happiness or influence bonus for some of the higher advanced techs. This could be represented as not only improved production efficiency, but maybe a broader diet available to the people on a planet. Hence, folks are 'happier' with a large variety of foods, or the world's influence incr
If anything, I'd love to see just the most advanced techs currently researched. If the text could be color coded to match branches that would be helpful too (diplomacy = yellow, ship defenses = purple, ship weapons = red, etc). Just something to help in understanding the jumble of techs that each race is working on would be a nice feature.
I'd love to see another expenditure in diplomacy along the lines of UP diplomats. You spend money like espionage towards the UP. The more time/money spent, the better informed you are what is on the council's mind. That way you could possibly get some general information on the up coming session at a low setting (example: a week before you find out the UP is concerned about trade), and at a higher setting, get more detailed information even earlier (example: several weeks before the session y
The Combat Mission series from Battlefront (www.battlefront.com) is another great turn-based game. They have an email game option, where players would view the progress for a turn, give their orders, and send it off as an email to their opponent. If anything, I'd love to see this implemented for GalCiv. Diplomacy offers could be tricky between players (there might have to be a separate order phase just for diplomatic efforts during the game turn). But given some player's schedule
