True. About one of those features, the environment categorization of planets one: I really like it, but why not a full blown terraforming feature? As in: making a zero level planet habitable? Would it affect game balance too much?

I got lucky in the campaign during that darn hard scenario, somewhere halftrough. Forgot the name, but I'm sure you know which one I mean. When I captured a Dread Lord planet I got the third best laser in the game. With that, I was able to build ships that could match the DL's ones. I researched up the logistics tree and the warpdrive tree and was able to make fleets with lots of lasers on lots of medium hull very fast ships. With that I was able to kick their buts. Yep. You can also give each individual ship a name. Just select the ship and click on that small square icon behind it's name.
Research the 'Alliances' tech. It's somewhere in that yellow diplomacy line at the top of the technology tree. Then be on very good terms with the one(s) you want to ally with. You could give them presents, like tech and ships for that, or perhaps attack their enemy. Once they really like you, you can ask for a alliance in the diplomacy screen.
