I have no idea how a society could function when the government is sponging 80% of its subject's earnings. I sure as heck would not want to go to work just so I could take 20 cents home and give 80 to the man. 80% taxes is beyond exhorbitant. In the USA alone, _maximum_ income tax rates have been over 80%. World War I : the top tax bracket was

The attack advantage is a good idea. I miss it. The attacker, especially in a surprise situation, should always have the advantage. Someone hasn't studied warfare. The defender almost always has such an advantage that the attacker requires a two or three to one quantity of troops. ( Note that attacking an enemy column while it is movi

I find it horrible, but it doesn't seem that Stardock has anyone who likes doing UI work. Not that UI work is all that much fun - but if they had a single person, even part time, concentrating on the UI there might be some consistency and/or improvements.

its been 5 min... dont bump your own post. i give your idea a thumbs down sorry. It would throw the balance of single tree techning down the drain. Not to mention that anyone who bumps his own post less than five minutes later, should usually be killfiled / /ignored and all his ideas / posted written off as drivel. (/bump!

Huh? The manual always said that esc was options. However, I agree that it would be good for space bar to close up every window, especially when you get four in one turn, and need to go through them all manually. Eh, you obviously haven't read the list of shortcuts in the PDF manual : "Enter | End turn or close current window" "

In 1.2, please implement the UI that is described in the manual, where a single keystroke is supposed to close any window. Note that the keys in the documentation say that Esc or Enter close windows, and they don't . Esc only opens / closes the options window, and Enter tells the game to process the next turn. The only key which actually does close some windows is the Space bar - but it only closes the small windows such as when you double click on a ship. <b

Of course, it'd be nice if the game was consistent with what it calls Approval & Influence. When you see a bonus site on a planet, one type says "Any Cultural Site gets a bonus" - but the actual things you can build aren't ever called "Cultural Sites", but rather Influence. Similarly, "Approval" vice "Happiness" - there's these nice icons indicating what the sites influence when you look at the site, but those icons do nothing to help the player tell which sites get a bonus from it.

Consider the sensor-suggestions. Why aren't we putting more emphasis on that? Because the more sensors the AI has, the slower the game will get. The AI can't see. It can simply look at tiles on the map one at a time and query what's on that tile. Imagine on a gigantic galaxy if the AI was looking at every single tile over and over how slow that would

First : 1.1 no longer pays attention to the "Enable Auto Turn" option. When the last ship has moved, the game goes right to the next turn, meaning that you can't adjust the economy, buy ships / planetary upgrades, etc. Second : Why is it that the keyboard shortcuts, as described in the manual, still don't work? There's STILL no key that will close windows. Escape key STILL brings up the options screen, and the Enter key STILL acts as "End Turn". Having to consa

I would like to add that there is a simple solution to most of the AI usage of planet tiles. The AI should focus on factories before building anything else on a planet. I don’t mean a mass of factories. I mean 1 or 2 to start, then begin adding other infrastructure. Eh, that's only one dece

An option for wrap-around maps would also be a possibility. Or for ring galaxies, spirals, etc. Though wrap-around would quite likely mess up the AI. Edit: Hmm. How come my Metaverse medals aren't showing up?

What browser are y'all using? I was getting the exact same behavior / result, with it just hanging at "processing data". Suppose it might just be timing / luck, but as soon as I loaded up Internet Explorer and tried with it (instead of Firefox & Opera), it worked. If the Metaverse Create/Edit character does in fact only work with the crappiest / most insecure browser out there, it really sucks - a number of us delete IE

Something I find rather handy is GameJackal : it isn't a hack / crack, but it does allow you to play a lot of your games without having the CD / DVD in the drive. Seems it builds a profile of what the game looked for on the CD, and copies that to the hard drive, at which point you just load GameJackal and tell it to run the game's profile. No swapping CDs out every time you want to switch games, with possibility of scratching t

Though I typically play singleplayer... except in Dominions, which is so unpredictable and has so many fun options that multiplayer will be a must for the "Hah, I tricked you!" factor, no matter how good the AI becomes. Heh. Yep, beating the AI will never have the "Hah! I snookered you!" moments tha

Don't think moving the window will do it - I've tried that, GalCiv2 starts taking up 99% of the CPU to where even mouse movements take forever. Suspect you'll have to change the primary monitor (something of a PITA, but I've found very few games that handle dual monitors well, especially if the primary is set to portrait mode instead of landscape).

If the patch isn't out - how come today, Stardock Central was showing Mar 22 for when GalCiv2 was updated when Wednesday it had an older date? Sure makes it look like an update has been put out. And as far as Download & Archive - since there's precious little to go by, it sure seemed likely that was the way to download an update and be able to roll-back to the archived version.

Is it a genuine complaint? Stardock Central is showing an update for GalCiv2 dated 22 March. Presumably this would be the beta. Using Stardock Central to, gee, update it, presumably should do just that. Not fail miserably, and not fail to display the log file as it says it should. As a programmer (and also as a purchaser), I'm dismayed if the patches are going to both be HUGE and fail to download and install themselve

Yep. It's also a bit crazy the way components grow in size, both with increasing hull size and miniaturization. Drives, life support, armor, it makes sense for them to get larger for the larger hulls. But ... Weapons??? You don't make the same weapon larger just because a bigger person is carrying it, or because it's going to be mounted on a larger vehicle. So WHY would the same laser be larger, just because it's on a la

Lovely. Just tried downloading the new beta update via Stardock Central. First : it (Central) doesn't show the size of the update, just the date it was updated. Don't figure it'll be that big, so I kick off download & archive. Over an hour later : "There was an error downloading and archiving GalCiv II. Error: No files found within the XML file (Code: 16) Result: Download and Archiv

Heh. And Brad wonders why reviews comment on an unfriendly user interface? Just look at doing post #1's advice, as opposed to a reset button (or having the AI always use the base race). Similarly, documented hot keys that don't work properly or at all ( Tab being inconsistent in going to next ship; no way to close a window without mousing to the Done/Close button, which isn't even always the same size / location ), menus and buttons that co

Biggest request : Make the keyboard shortcuts work . Right now, Tab doesn't go to the next ship, Esc/Return don't close current windows (actually I've seen _one_ window type that Esc closes, but Enter/Return simply goes to the next turn. Bad bad bad!) Very frustrating - have to use the mouse way too much, and finding our active ships is a real pain. Let us rename planets : when I colonize someplace I have no idea what I'll win
