Dancing With The Devil: My Chat With The ACLU!

http://brutus1964.blogspot.com
I called the Pennsylvania chapter of the ACLU on Saturday and left a message. To their credit a representative called back this afternoon. The purpose of my contact with them was to discuss the proposed Flight 93 memorial and the Islamic symbolism that it features.

ACLU: “Thank you for contacting the Pennsylvania American Civil Liberties Union, this is Pam, what is the nature of your complaint”

Ken: “I was calling about the proposed Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania, and the Islamic symbolism they are using for it”.

Pam: “I haven’t heard about this, what kind of Islamic symbolism are they using?”

Ken: “for one thing the main part of the memorial is a huge Red Crescent, and they are calling it the Crescent of Embrace”.

Pam: “So how is that an Islamic symbol?”

Ken: “A red crescent to a Muslim is like a cross to a Christian”

Pam: “Is it just some kind of artistic expression in the shape of a crescent, or are they intending to promote Islam”

Ken: “Well the designers are denying it has anything to do with Islam but the symbolism is still there and I think it is completely inappropriate to have anything symbolizing Islam in a memorial to the Hero’s of flight 93.

Pam: “Well if the designers do not have the intent on promoting a religion then I don’t see the problem.”

Ken: “If the Memorial was shaped like a cross would you have a problem with that?”

Pam: “If it was intended as a cross and to promote a particular religion then we would be very troubled with that, but if it only resembled a cross and that was not the intent of it then we would not have a problem with that either.” (Yea right!)

Ken: “So what you are saying is that even though many people may view the crescent as a bow to Islam you wouldn’t have a problem with it unless the designers specifically intended it to be a religious symbol?”

Pam: “Yes, in fact if the crescent is meant to promote understanding and multiculturalism then I would think it is quite appropriate.

The fact that they call it the “Crescent of Embrace” means that the memorial is intending to embrace other cultures”.

Ken: “Yes but it could also mean to embrace Islam.”

Pam: “I don’t see it that way. We will certainly look into it but it doesn’t sound like something the ACLU would get involved in.

Ken: Yes please look into it. There is plenty of resources on the Internet, and you can go directly to the Flight 94 Memorial website and check it out for yourself.

Pam: I will do that; if there is anything that we feel is actionable I will contact you ok.

Ken: “Please do”.

Pam: “Thank you for calling the American Civil Liberties Union."

Awww now you went and done it. He's gonna whine like crazy that you deleted his post. What do you want to bet that he claims that you're limiting his right to free speech?

ahh but the pentangle was (is). and steath bombers have that triangular holy trinity shape.

Pentagram.  And now you are getting into the ACLU mindset.  Look around and see what else should be banned because it has religious overtones, even tho that is not the primary purpose.

Guess Arlington is next.  All those Crosses and Stars of David (Altho the ACLU does not care about the latter).

Ya know, guy, I keep trying to like you. But, then you come out with this absolute crappola bullshit. From this statement, one can only assume that you are inferring that the ACLU is made up of a bunch of Jew commies, anyway, so no wonder they don't take issue with stars of david.

If that's not what you meant, then do you song and dance and backtrack into an apology. I'll be waiting.

Although I probably would not have made the connection, I can see how the symbol could be a bad idea... right drmiller, where ever you are?

I'm with kingbee, here. Maybe this was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, but the "controversy" is silly. I'll have to get my globe & some string out, but I don't see how the "crescent" could be "facing" Mecca, no matter which way you define "facing."

I'm here. I'm "always" here. I just may not always say anything. The symbolism is not good idea.

Yet you proudly display that symbol of racism, the confederate flag. You're a hypocrite. I bet you're ugly, too.

That's a flame? Come on, dabe, you can do better than that. I've seen you do better. I'm mildly, mind you mildly opposed to the new design, but I'm wildly against poor flaming.

Now if you'd said something like you're so ugly you'd scare small children away, only they don't come near you on account of the smell.

Or I recommend that you stay away from outhouses out of fear of mistaken identity. Now that's more like a flame.

Also, I can see the symbolism. And like the phallus on the tower on the front of the little mermaid video cover, intentional or not, it seems inapropriate and likely to offend.

And to wrap up this overlong comment, the ACLU is right up there in my book of evil with PETA, Walmart, Gilbert Godfried, Jane Fonda, Kim Jong Il, Bad Ash from Army of Darkness, and the way that the UN handled Rwanda.

Spc, you're right. I'm sorry I offended you. I take back the "ugly" part. I still think he's a hypocrite.

I may be ugly and maybe even fat but you're stupid! Liposuction and surgery can fix my problems. But there is no help for yours.

See, now that's a flame. Modified from Winston Churchill, but still a nice flame.

The original went something like "Madam, I may be a drunk, but I'll be sober in the morning and you'll still be ugly."

Yes but that was before money could buy plastic surgery! As of right now there is no cure for stupidity. But as far as the original goes..... you're 100% dead on.

Since few people will be viewing the memorial from overhead, the so-called symbolism, which you really have work at to get from the site plan, is going to be difficult to discern when visiting the memorial. Tempest in a teapot here, although the more general point about the bias of the ACLU is valid.
