HELP!

What's happening!?

OK, I know this is a shot in the dark, 'cause there are a million reasons for these things happening, but I was hoping there was some PC guru out there who might have an idea... These things have happened to my computer in the last few weeks, one by one...

-CorelDRAW 9 no longer opens. I've tried reinstalling. It starts to load, then just quits.

-when rightclicking on a picture file, and saying open with Paintshop Pro 6.. it says "Windows cannot locate the file..." However PSP6 opens, and the files can be opened from there... and all files can still be viewed with Windows picture and fax viewer. This same thing occurs with CorelDRAW files.

-When going to Control panel, accounts page... only a blank white window opens with the back and forward arrows in the corner... no account info appears... same thing happens if I click my icon on the start menu.

-Windows Media Player 10 will not run... says "Internal Application Error"

-HP Scanner program will not open... similar to CorelDRAW 9, it starts to load, then just quits.

I always have virus protection running and a firewall. And I've done these things... Virus scan, defrag, ran a cleanup program, reinstalled HP scanner software and CorelDRAW 9, nothing has changed.

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME I NEED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS...

Have you tried a spyware removal program? You may also be able to try a system restore instead of completely reinstalling Windows. Repairing Windows through your Windows installation CD may or may not work as well. Have you tried reinstalling PSP6? Also, check your file associations in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types (I think that's right, since I'm currently using a Chinese Windows) to see if there are some messed up associations with your image files.

Or you can try right-clicking each image type one by one, and use Open As, then choosing your program (PSP6 or CorelDraw), and saying to always open with this.

I had the same thing happen when I tried looking at my walls and pics too. I had to uncheck the format they are in from being associated with my PSP9 in it's association files list. That took care of it. I don't know about the other problems You may need to download the script file at MS. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
I would run a spyware scan for sure, with more than one spyware scan! How old is your computer? It is possible the hard drive is fixin to die. Serious backup's may be in order too. Hope you get it worked out. Good luck! Smile!

You wouldn't happen to have one of the recent versions of IconPackager that was messing some things up would you?

I never thought of asking him that Sir Bichur! I still have the 2.99 version of IP and I had the same thing happen with my pics. I thought it was kind of weird to just start happening out of the blue. Anyway, mine is okay now. I'm sure you will be able to help him more than I can! Have a good weekend.

Sir Bichur, there were none of your usual disclaimers in that question. Does that question have a hidden meaning? That is a possibility tho.

Actually, all I'm capable of is asking the questions that eventually get asked if the intial answer doesn't work.

Well.. so far, most of what has been said here are great ideas... but unfortunately, not the problem...
Or you can try right-clicking each image type one by one, and use Open As, then choosing your program (PSP6 or CorelDraw), and saying to always open with this.

This is what doesn't work... when I do that it says it can't find the file... but the file is there.. I can open it other ways...

How old is your computer? It is possible the hard drive is fixin to die.

Now this may be helpful... I didn't know that was happening...? I updated IP right when Mormegil's Icon a day was released... would that be a bad version? That also, now that I think about it, seems to be about when some of these problems started...

I will get a spyware remover, and run that... I'd love some more info about the IP thing if anyone can help! Thank you all for your responses... I wanna beat this without rebooting Windows...

Only 2 years old...

That's not it... I checked that already...

OK, somehow those sentences got all jumbled up on my last post... ??? The sentence that begins "Now this mmay be helpful..." should be at the end after the quote about Icon Packager...

Have you done any Windows Updates recently? I had a similiar experience about a month ago from a windows update. If you can do a system restore I would try that.

What kind of problems did it cause you exactly...?

RPGFX : Let's try this one more time;

What version of IP do you have installed?
sorry, yrag... I had 3.00.002 running... but I uninstalled it completely and still have the problems... I think I've ruled out IP as the problem.
Not necessarily....try installing 3.00c[b].002 and see if it fixes your system on a reboot. You also should look at NET Framework hotfix KB886903. Un-install it and try a reboot if IP is a no go.

Windows update broke Paint shop pro and my HP printer/printing software. After A system restore everything was fine. After a couple of weeks I did a Windows update and everything was fine.

It was 886903, Craig. MS 'fixed' that Febuary update in June......they just didn't tell anyone...

Well... thanks for all the help folks. Unfortunately, nothing is working... My brother asked me if my clock was slow and it is, so he said that it could be a bios battery problem... I'm gonna change that and see... But I think I'll be popping in the old XP disk... Pray nothing goes awry!
