Problem after updating to DesktopX 3.1 and IconX 1.10

Just updated to the newest versions of these products, and one problem occured..

I use both DesktopX and IconX, and now it won't finish loading a saved desktop (which
was saved when IconX also was running.. saved with the new version by the way,
and hasn't any objects in it yet)..
It says Loading desktop.. and that message stays forever it seems, until
I go ahead and start IconX manually that is, then everything seems normal..

Until logoff that is.. then an errordialog flashes for a second (don't have time to
read the message, but the icon is the red circle and a white X).. and IconX doesn't
start with the SmartStartup or any other way when I login again (it's quite visible,
since the icons aren't at the right place, and has standard behaviour)..

This doesn't happen when I don't use DesktopX, but start and run IconX standalone.. then
no errormessage flashes when I logout either.. and IconX starts properly on login again..

Does somebody have an idea on how to get rid of the errormessage on logout, and to start
IconX properly on login when DesktopX also should run..

I have tried to disable the RazerHid driver I had a problem with earlier to check if that
was the problem, but no dice..

I found the message which it displayed for a second in EventViewer:
Application popup: IconX.exe - DLL Initialization Failed : The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Yes.. I uninstalled IconX from within SC, and reinstalled it directly from S.C,
not from archive.. Still no dice..

It seems that when I shut down the computer, and DesktopX shuts down because of it,
DX doesn't detect that the computer is shutting down, so it tries to run
IconX standalone (as the new does when you unload DX before IconX), and that doesn't
work because of the computer being in shutdown/logout state..

Hello all,
During the last update via stardock central Desktopx (autoinstall) reported a problem with the install... How can I reset the install to install again?
Thanks for the advice in advance. (you guys are good)

MrStillKick, you could rightclick the product and choose Uninstall.. and if that doesn't work there
is a utility named Zapper that probably could take care of this.. I don't remember the address
to the zapper utility, but it is rather often mentioned (with link) on SD and WC forums..

Then install the product again.

I have been having major problems getting IconX to work right for about a year now. There are two problems in particular. One is the animation/action that occurs when I mouse over the label. I hate this because it causes a stupid looking double animation, once when my mouse crosses over the label and then again when it crosses over the Icon. Is there any way to disable the label mouse over action? The second problem involves Icons being spaced way to far apart when I download or save anything to the desktop. I am positive that all of my settings correct. I am also positive that neither one of these problems existed before IconX & DesktopX split.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? Has anyone found a workaround? I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I have my label to reduce to nothing on mouse over.
You can also set the label on mouse over to equal what it starts at = no expansion

Sir Bichur,

Thanks for the reply, I already have my away and mouse over states configured so that my labels never visually change. My problem involves the icon animation being activated when I mouse over the label. For example my away icon state has the icon size at 72x72 while my mouse over icon state is set at 96x96. When the mouse passes over the label not the icon the icon will zoom from 72x72 to 96x96. I don't want this to happen because when I pass over the label it zooms once, resets, and then zooms again once my mouse reaches the icon creating a horrible looking double zoom effect. This is hard for me to explain so sorry if I've confused anyone.

Mine have been hidden a while - been using animated walls - but i don't remember mine doing the double zoom - once i get home later tonite i'll check mine and if no double zoom, see how i have it set.

I have also been having problems after the update. The problem I am having is that IconX no longer automatically loads with DesktopX after the update. It's like DesktopX no longer detects that IconX is installed.

I can load them individually but the tabs in DesktopX for IconX are missing.

I can run IconX by itself and get the option to have it start automatically but once I run DesktopX that option disappears.

If DesktopX is running I can load IconX separately and it will load and run, but, after rebooting IconX will not come back.

I have uninstalled both DesktopX and IconX, manually removed the folders from the HDD (lost all my desktops). Rebooted and then reinstalled them and I still have the same problem.

From what I have been reading:
DX and ICX are separate
won't see the icx tab unles it's running and you're in builder mode
you can create a shortcut to icx in the startup folder and it will run on start - i didn't get the check option until i did this- i get both dx and icx to run auto this way

Argyle i got it to do the double zoom but i don't know how i did it.. but i think animate was unchecked.. it's late now but i'll look again later.

Sir Bichur.. The problem for my part is that when you shutdown/logoff the DesktopX unloads IconX (the one which integrates with DX), and tries to load IconX standalone, and that is not possible
when in shutdown mode, so it throws the errormessage above (which isn't seen for more than a second). In EventViewer, in the System category, with source: Application Popuo, there you can find the errormessage above..

You can check the behaviour of the restart of IX by running both IX and DX, then Unload DX..
You see that it both unloads IX, unloads DX, and starts IX again, this time standalone..
Same thing if you are already running IX standalone and then start DX.. Those doesn't result
in a error because of the computer isn't in shutdown mode.. i.e it seems that it doesn't know/care
that the computer is shutting down..

The problem with this is that it doesn't store the startup settings,as it did before, probably
because of the error above..

Try to run IconX standalone (i.e no DX), and select start at startup, and IX starts with SmartStartup.. If you do the same with DX, DX does the same.. But together, then only DX will
start on the next login..

A somewhat irritating problem really..

The tabs however, shouldn't really be a problem if it did what was expected.. i.e if DX AND IX are running when I shutdown (without errormsg), then both should start when I login again..

Thanks for your help Sir Bichur,

I have found a work around for now. Let me quickly go over what I have found.

I have a copy of IconX version 1.00b along with an old IconX theme that I created when IconX was still part of DesktopX. If I load one of the default themes which comes packaged with IconX I get the double zoom & spacing problems. If I load the old theme everything works great. I’ve looked over the .ixtheme files and can’t find any significant differences.

Unfortunately this old IconX theme refuses to load properly with the latest version of IconX. This is a problem because the latest version of DesktopX will automatily close any IconX release prior to v1.10.002 (the newest version).

The problems involved between DesktopX and IconX are directly related to running objects or running builder mode in DesktopX. The work around that I have come up with involves only running widgets. I have converted all of my objects to widgets and disabled DesktopX from loading at startup. I only use widgets now and everything works great.

Mr haerdalis...
yeah, i hear you. it's also be discussed here Link

but the error message thing wasn't mentioned. have you tried creating a shortcut to iconx in the startup folder? it will let both run at startup assuming you have DTX checked - check out comments #27 & #34

Bichur, yeah, I have tried it, and it works, but the same thing cause the error I mentioned above
when shutting down/logging off, because both programs are running at that time no matter what.. and it would be rather nice to have the programs cooperate as they should, at least so both are running when both are expected to at startup, without resorting to the startupfolder thingy, when SmartStartup or DX really should care for both..

Rather strange to have all those icons stuffed together in a chaos on the desktop until IX kicks
in and places them where they should be when I login while all programs ran at startup starts..

It works like a temporary workaround, but no more than that really..

i've used the "shortcut in startup folder" workout method - that worked.
but i still have with the error message at the end.

been downloading sp2 since yesterday - rural dial-up & I aint shutting down anytime soon.

do y'all have smartstart enabled disabled? assuming you have SDC. tools, setting, general

Sir Bichur, I use the smartstart 'cause it avoids such things like displaying the
default desktop first, and then adding one after another item.. such as IconX (if only
that worked properly together with DX), and DX.. It seems somewhat faster to load that
way too..

Thanks for the input - I should have thought of that... but all things are working just fine now. Can't complain.

My problem is that on my laptop I can't get DesktopX objects or widgets to load. When I double-click on the Desktop X program icon or the file icon of an object or widget, the cursor shows that the PC is "working in the background" then after a few seconds, nothing happens. No crash, no error - just nothing. Repeated clicks don't seem to do anything but every once in a while, suddenly Desktop X will load really really late (though most times it's a complete no-go).

To help clarify the problem, let me point out that WindowBlinds, CursorXP, Icon Packager, etc. load and operate just fine. It's only DesktopX and widgets. Could this be a problem with the latest beta version of DesktopX.

I've used Object Desktop on my prior computer without any problems. It's one of the most innovative and dynamic products for a PC out there!

Would like to know more about 'Smartstart' - how to activate it ?

I had to make my own startup shortcut in order to have IconX load-up.

I too have thing where default icons appear, then not until end of start-up process does IconX load-up. It looks to be a very untidy process of redrawing & positioning.

Is it possible to raise priority of IconX during startup ?

Thanks for help
