Why do the new versions of IP crash on my computer?

I'm a little frustrated. The last 4 versions of IP to be released (we're now on 3.00a[b].003) have all crashed on my comp. I open up the program and it immediately crashes. I've ended up having to uncheck the "show pre-release versions", uninstall Icon Packager and then re-install the old 2.50h.087 version. Does anyone else have this problem and how can it be fixed? For the split second that the new betas are open, the changes in the program look SWEEET! I just want to be able to use it.

I'm having the same problem. The new version of IP crashes within seconds of its being opened, and if I attempt to open an individual IP file, I only get an error message.

The problem has been fixed internally guys, thanks. The problem was actually a buffer overflow in the theme authors comments for bluecurve. There should be a new update going out within the next couple of days to address the problem.

That's very good. Hovwever, I do not have the Bluecurve set, and I'm having the exact same problems described above. What's more, I tried to solve the problem by redownloading the shareware version (identified as version 2.5), since I've never had a problem with earlier versions. Unfortunately, it appeared to be the identical to the new crashing version, and it also crashed. Now what?

Not sure whether it would be best to wait for the update in your case, but you could try using the Zapper utility to uninstall the current version Link - Just download > double-click > use "Uninstall" tab to select IconPackager > OK.

After uninstall, reboot, delete the old IconPackager sub-directory in "C:\Program Files\Stardock" folder (where "C" is the letter drive).

Use the link left by Nakor in comment #3 to download and install Stardock Central, then run Stardock Central and use it to install IconPackager.

I am not having issues with IP version 3.x, which I installed on top of 2.50h.087 (the previous official release), so this is all I have to offer.

Note - I would recommend unloading all Stardock programs (and any other customization softwares) > return Windows to the default theme including all icons - before doing any uninstalling, deleting, and installing procedures to reduce the possibility of any conflicts.

Thanks Corky. Is the "Zapper" the same thing as the Registry Mechanic? I think maybe I'll wait for the update. Did wonder if part of the problem could be the fact that I'm still running SP1?
Just in case the updated version doesn't work either, is there any way of acquiring a pre-3.X version?

The "Zapper" is a Stardock utility to remove programs that are not uninstalling correctly due to missing files or other issues (not a Registry Mechanic to the best of my knowledge). It is not required, but is an option when having problems uninstalling the Stardock programs.

The only way I know of to obtain a version prior to the current version being offered is to have made an "Application Archive" using Stardock Central program.

Otherwise, I think you are out of luck.

I am not seeing any behavior in IP 3 to indicate that you would have a problem with running it on XP with SP1.

I think that if you remove the current version (using the Zapper or not), and delete the ObjectDock folder found in "C:\Program Files\Stardock" folder (where "C" is the letter drive), you will be able to install the updated version 3 without issue.

The program installer should be written to handle any registry keys correctly.

Hey there, I just downloaded the new shareware but it just crashes everytime I try to open it. I Tried to uninstall and reinstall it and also redownloading it in case of lack of tranfer...but without any results.Now I gotta go back to the IP folder to manually uninstall it again... If anyones know something to help me, it would be appreciated.
BTW, I din't downloaded from Stardock central as an update, only window blinds is Installed and works perfectly. thanks

There is no doubt whatsoever: Icon Packager paralyzes my windows help and support along with desktop assistance, etc. I did a fresh install of Windows XP SP2. Help and support work fine at this point. Then I create a restore point. Next, I install Icon Packager which works great in and of itself. My Windows XP help and support will work as well, until the computer is restarted or rebooted. After that point, help and support, desktop assistance, and problems with the taskbar freezing, among others begin. The only way to straighten things back out, is to a restore to the point before Icon Packager was installed. This has taken many hours at the computer, working by trial and error with my software to find out which software was responsible for the disabling of Windows XP help and support. I hope Stardock does something about the compability issues with this program and soon, or at least allow us access to older versions that do not cause so many problems.

If you have not already done so, please contact tech support Email and explain the situation, including:

- What you have done to test the situation
- Your system configuration: OS, Processor, RAM, Video adapter, Anti-Virus and Firewall programs
- Version of IconPackager, and which package(s) that you used to test

This will help them greatly in trying to reproduce the problem, and to design a fix for future releases.

I bought IP3. Installs fine looks good but when logging off then logging back on wierd stuff happens especially with McAfee (See #10 the dude) Virus scan won't go on, can't go to the McAfee control panel. Can't do anything with Windows control panel. Firefox won't go. $14.95 down the drain! I had to restore back 3 days then all was fine except that my $14.95 is gone! XP home, SP2, Compaq Presario 2.8 ghz, 512 RAM. I really think there is something with McAfee which I have used for years with no problems. I don't plan on abandoning McAfee. I use McAfee antivirus and firewall. I emailed support at Stardock. No reply except the standard uninstall reinstall reply. Yes, I did that before even emailing them to no avail. I even called them and left my phone number, the guy asked for it. Oh, if I logged on to my wife's account there was no trouble. I might add that she doesn't use any of the Stardock stuff at all just XP straight up. That's how I did the restore of three days back by going on her account because i couldn't use the control panel on my account. What gives? Please, some help!?!

Argh! I have the same problems with MrZaie. After IP (latest version via Stardock) was installed, Photoshop 5.5 crashes on startup, and Windows Help and Support and the Control Panel cannot be accessed. The funny thing is, a freshly installed IP caused no problems until I applied an icon package (any package). That's when the errors happen. Uninstalling IP does nothing to solve the issues. I had to restore from an old Ghost backup

Same problem here: IP breaks help&support and some other system applications. Took me about two days of testing and a complete reinstall of windows before I found out which program was responsible for this...

Citizen Casalla - Just so I understand, are you saying that after two days of testing you found out that it was IP messsing up the system or you know what other program is messing with IP. If it is the later would you be willing to share your knowledge? What program is messing up IP3? All I have gotten from Stardock help & support so far is uninstall - reboot - reinstall. This was done before I even contacted them. In the real world if I bought a product that didn't work I could go back to the store and exchange it or get my money back. This doesn't seem to be going down like that. I realize that this is software and there are other issues involved, it's not like returning a flashlight but at the same time when you purchase something you expect it to work. There is nothing on the IP page that mentions that there will problems if you are running McAfee or whatever. According to the requirements listed on the IP page my system should be fine for IP but right now it isn't and so far I'm not getting satisfaction as far as getting this fixed. It is rather disapointing because I have been very happy with WB-DX3 etc. I've been very happy with Stardock. I hope they can come up with a solution, soon.

One way to troubleshoot IconPackager program conflicts is to:

Deselect any options to run at start-up in Stardock programs (including widgets) > unload all Stardock programs > return Windows to the default theme including all icons > uninstall all Stardock programs > reboot computer > delete the IconPackager sub-directory in "\Program Files\Stardock" (or "\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop") folder > then install IconPackager only, and reboot computer.

Download a recent package from WC by right-clicking the download link > Save target as.. > select "All files" in the "Save as Type:" drop-down list > save to My Documents > double-click the downloaded file to invoke IconPackager > click "Apply".

Start any programs that displayed problems with IconPackager previously installed to test functionality.

If all is well, reboot computer and repeat tests.

If all is still well, install the other Stardock programs one at a time, testing between each install.

Here is a link to the zapper utility which is designed to uninstall many of the Stardock programs by double-clicking after download and using the "uninstall" tab to select programs you want to remove Link

Note - you may want to save any downloaded "skin/theme/image" files to a temporary folder which will allow you to replace them after re-installing the programs.

BTW - I run IconPackager, WindowBlinds, and ObjectDock Plus all the time without issue on XP Pro (SP2), including Norton Internet Security Pro 2003.

I hope this helps you narrow the issue down.

what I meant was that Icon Packager was messing up the system. I only found out in the end by manually creating restore points before installing each program on the new system. The problems appeared only after installing IP over Stardock Central and was gone again after switching back to the last restore point. So unfortunately I don't have any solution but I do hope that they will fix it soon because it seems to be quite a severe "low-level" problem...

I have also been having problems with MaAfee since I installed IP3. I upgraded my McAfee (it was due to expire in a month anyway) and I am still having problems. For example, I can't open the McAfee Security Center using the icon in the lower left of the task bar. In fact I can't open any of my Mcafee programs.

Anyone have any suggestions (besides using a different security system)?

My system is an AMD64 3500+ running WinXp Pro SP2 with 1 GB of memory. I'm running Kerio Personal Firewall and using Avast antivirus. I was running Windowblinds downloaded via Stardock with no problems. Only when I install Iconpackager the problem starts. Like many others in the forums, it took me some time to figure this out. The first time I went whole hog and downloaded everything in Objectdesk Luckily I did a Ghost backup before I installed Stardock because I learnt the hard way that restore points in XP does not always work, especially for complicated installs

Is someone still working on a fix for this issue? I've followed most of the advice I was given previously, and eventually have been able to use IP partially, but I've had many of the problems mentioned here, including losing Windows Help and one of my graphics programs. This was solved for me by using System Restore, but though I can now change icons in most cases, the program still seems to shut down prematurely. I downloaded the "Smart Exception" program and have sent several logs to Stardock. I hope this can be fixed, because it (IP) is really an excellent program.
