Do you have Faith?

Do you have Faith?

So may quesions.

I was brought up as a Roman Catholic. I attended Catholic schools throughout my life, and went to church every single Sunday till I was in year 10 (1997)

Even though I was going to church from year 7 to 10, there was something that happened in 1994 that made me question my faith immensely, and left me rather baffled.

I am not going to tell you what that event was; I am just going to tell you that you would understand. Can you imagine how hard it is for someone who was brought up to believe all these stories on creation and religion, to just loose faith?

Faith is something I think everyone will need to question shortly. With the advancement of the human species in Technological and Philosophical areas, we really have to start asking the hard questions.

Cloning and stem cell research… Should it be allowed?

Ask yourself this… If you got around with a bunch of friends, and commissioned some of them to glorify your life when you died in mysterious circumstances, and this group of friends became somewhat engrossed by the story of your life, that they told a few people around them, then a few people around them, then a few people around them… is that a religion? Jesus Christ had Christianity… Mark Sugden will have Sugdianity.

Please don’t consider me blasphemous… Christians have my utmost respect, as does anyone who has any faith in any religion. I am just rather suspect to all the facts.

Last night on the Television I saw a story on how a baby was just born in Sydney – it was apparently a carbon copy of its father, and it was organized by the sect known as the Raelians - http://www.rael.org/english/index.html

This group is based on one French guy’s apparition of an Alien being talking to him and telling him that he is the savior of mankind… yada yada yada. In stead of Adam and Eve, or Evolution, these guys preach that humans were ‘placed’ on earth 10,000 years ago by Aliens as a social experiment… “As if” I hear you all say.

Well, I am sorry, while that sounds spaced out, I simply don’t know that it isn’t true, so I won’t rubbish the idea.

We are all so comfortable in believing that there is a greater being out there… we all take solace in the fact that there is some superior being watching over us… but is he really watching over you? Is it something that has just been drummed into your head by society? your parents? your environment?

Let me ask you – how isn’t it possible that human’s were planted here by Aliens 10,000 years ago? We simply don’t know.

Religion is holding science back. Cloning a whole human being, that’s not really something I am comfortable with, but stem cell research for medicinal purposes – that is something I am comfortable with. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/02/12/1076548160824.html - an article on the progress of stem cell research.

Stem cells are exciting because they can potentially be grown into any type of human tissue, even whole organs. They can be extracted from umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, even animals, but cloned cells are genetically identical to the person they were extracted from and of better quality

There are sooo many ethical questions though… how would you feel accepting a manufactured kidney?

If it means the quality of some ones life will improve… how is that an ethical question?

I am at a stage in my life where I will feel more spiritual on the beach, in the forest or up in the mountains than I ever do in a church, but I am also at a stage where I wish I knew more… It doesn’t really matter though, As long as I try to be the best person I can be… God, Ganesha, Jesus, Aliens, Mohammad and the great spirits will all be proud of me.

As a people though, I don’t think we can let archaic notions of supreme beings hold us back.

Your thoughts and comments will be well received.

Peace Out.

Well, I look forward to seeing The Passion of Christ too Muggaz. It's just my opinion, and I'd be embarassed to say how off track that has been, and how many times I have been totally wrong, but you are seeking out for somthing. The thing that has happened to me and I think many others, is that when you begin to question what you have previously believed (not a bad thing), you seek out other answers. The problem arises often for people like me, thinkers, maybe even analytical types, we like facts. Something we can say, "I know, that I know, that I know, this is real." But with so many philosophies, and religions in the world, what the heck man! How frustrating can things get?!

Anyway, I hope you can see that you aren't alone on this. It's arguable that everybody's situation is different, of course; every Christian knows his own testimony, every non-believer has his own reasons. The thing that challenges me as a believer is that God is spirit, I can't touch Him, I can't observe Him with my senses (chicken skin isn't evidence that you're in his precense! ) And the things that matter to Him aren't tangible either! (Man this is a project for me!) He doesn't want to see us impact the world and save peoples lives as much as He wants to be connected to us first, just like any father wants to be connected to his child. Of course, a father desires the best for his child, and desires to see that child excel, and live to his or her potential, and how proud that would make a father. But whithout ever having a relationship with that child how sad also; how can a father be a father without a relationship with his child?

Then that to me would explain Jesus' purpose, not just as a great teacher and prophet as some say, but as a sacrifice. Because of the sin of Adam, all of his descendants--mankind--was born into sin (no matter how selflessly and flawlessly a man may live his life his, unfortunately, is a "sinner." I know, not fair; wouldn't you have wanted to jump into the garden of Eden and tackle Adam before he bit that apple? Though, tackling a naked guy, i dont know about that--well, no need to epound on that.)
ANYWAY! That was God's way, to make a way for Him to have relationships with his creations, so that He can call us His children. And when we die, because we believed and did not rebel and reject Him, we get to spend eternity with Him.

I suppose that is where faith becomes the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen. Faith is living your life according to something that you only have hope for. If you know something because you can see, touch, smell and hear it--that's not faith because you know it's there. We desire to see evidence, but faith IS the the evidence. When you see a man on fire living passionately and genuinely, that is the evidence. We don't see or understand, but we begin to believe, just a little more.

Is God my crutch?
Well if so, I hope I never forget deoderant . I told you earlier that I know I'm imperfect, and man have I made an idiot of myself a thousand times over. I've done things that I regret, just like anybody. There have been times I should have apologiesed--but my pride held me back. So I hope that He does help me walk better.

I understand, Mug, if you don't believe, asking would help nothing. One of these dayz you'll see, I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

I have faith... faith in the concept of good and love and all that...

but the Christian/Catholic/Jewish/Islam God just doesn't exist to me... the image of the benevolant white old man or whatever... same goes for Jesus... i think he was just made up or perhaps exaggerrated to validate christianity. As an entity, he is non-existent. I am stickling with teh concept theory.

this is what i am interpretting -

"God, i dont beleive in you, but i am asking you to give me faith to belive in you"

- wait a minute, i dont beleive in you, how am i ever to going to obtain my faith by asking you?

Muggaz, I hardly think that the apostles would have laid down their lives for something that was made up. No He was very much real and they saw Him do the things He did with their own eyes. Its not uncommon to be low on your faith though. Even the same apostles that were with Jesus and saw Him do those miricles got low on faith from time to time. Remember when the storm came and they woke Jesus up because they were afraid they were going to parish? GCJ

This guy from the Raelin sect saw the aliens with his own eyes as well GCJ...

I am sorry, but what gives the 12 apostles who lived circa 2000 years ago more credit that this crackpot?

Muggaz, humour me and read my article on "What God has done for me"... i know it's not going to change your mind on anything, but it'll at least give you another perspective...
