1024 & 1280. Who uses more?

Here is some statics on Screen Resolutions from our WinCustomize Logs:

1: 1024 x 768  (53%)
2: 1280 x 1024 (18%)
3: 800 x 600 (13%)
4: 1152 x 864 (7%)
5: Other (unspecified) (9%)

Personally I use 1600 x 1200 at work and 1280 x 1024 at home.

Most of the DesktopX themes are 1024x768 especially the older ones. But the newer ones are more 1280x1024 or Resolution independant (from 800 to 1600).

I use 1280x1024 at home and 800x600 at work(it is a dinosaur!)

I use 1280x1024 at home (that's what my LCD monitor uses), and 1600x1200 at work (21" monitor). I like a lot of info on my desktop

I don't really understand ppl using 1280x1024 - I use 1280x960 to maintain that 4:3 aspect ratio...

Well, when it's the native resolution of your LCD screen, that's what you use

Besides that, I stick to the 4:3 ratio.

At home and work I use 1280x1024.

I've got dual monitors...15 and 13...so I use 1024x768 and 800x600. Maybe Santa will get me a new set of bigger monitors for the holidays

Pats stats are very interesting. I would have never have thought that 1024 X 768 was so popular. I always thought 1280 X 1024 would be ahead

1152 X 864 is perfect with a 17 inches monitor ... i don't know why so few people are using it ...

1024 X 768. When I get a monitor that can do 85 Hertz or above with a resolution higher than 1024 X 768, I'll do that. Probably 1152 x 864 or 1280x960.

T-MAN, you are probably using a 19"or large screen at work not?

My monitor can do 85 hertz but my video card only goes as high as 800 x 600. damn onboard video. >

Well! Now that's a real surprise, becuase I was sure that someone was going to show me that there're actually are more people using 1280 reso'!!!

I can understand that at the higher reso's you can put more info on the screen, but wouldn't it make sense to theme more towards the more popular size?

And commenting on #2 I have yet to see a theme beyond a fairly simple one that was resolution independent. Yet I keep hearing that that is the way that themes should be. Is it really possible to make a complex theme reso' independent?

1024x768 on both my 17 and 19 in monitors.

From my own personal experience there are really only two kinds of users:

1) The average joe who purchases a computer with all the standard equipment in one neat little bundle at the store and never really alters anything on it other than to add software (video games, office software, etc).

2) The artist and/or power-user who purchases as much state of the art equipment(monitor, memory, hard drive) as his or her budget will allow.

Now the last two+ years have made 17" monitors the standard for computers - as such the computers have been set to a default resolution of 1024X768 which is considered to be the best setting for the average viewer and the average joe will almost never change this.

Now whenever we talk about standard anything the artist or power-user will always try to go one step higher which for monitors would be 19" which would give you 1280X1024.

So really, people don't change resolution settings to increase their viewing area they just use it because that is what the monitor calls for. And as mentioned earlier some have to use higher resolutions like 1400X1050 or 1600X1200 because that is what is required by LCD screens and anyone who has ever tried to change resolution settings on laptops will tell you, if you do so, even the smallest amount will make everything look terrible your really have one resolution when it comes to LCD screens.

1024 x 768 on a 19" monitor (using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro). Anything else just looks to small.

I would do 1600 but my moniter cant support it i guess. I need a new one cause I got a new comp.

It goes up to 1280 and that is where it is at.

Dual monitor: 1600*1200 on my primary monitor and 1280*960 on my secundary one.

1600 x 1200 on my dell laptop (15.4 inch). 1920 x 1440 on my home pc (21 inch)

Raithe...I'm a 'power user' and even on my nice new 19" Diamond View [Mitsubishi] I run 1024x768....

It's actually more about seeing what you are looking at than trying to be bigger just for the sake of it.

Since the days of 640x480 limitations, moving on to 800x600 as it was supported with hardware and software...and beyond...it's been 'convenient' to continue with the 4x3 format so 1024x768 is both popular and logical in progression....

At work I use 2560x1024. At home it's 1280x1024.

I've had 19" and 17" monitors and I'ved use 1024x768 for years. This was not the default resolution for my monitors (the defaults settings were 800x600 even on my newest---one year old---monitor, go figure) but it's a comfortable size for me.

Based on my DX themes, the 1280x1024 themes have been vastly more poplular. On one particular theme, I made 2 identical versions. One of them is 1024 and the other is 1280. The 1280 got a higher rating and holds double the amount of downloads as the 1024.

It took me a bit to get used to 1280 on my 19" monitor, but now that I am used to it, 1024 looks gigantic and is uncomfortable.

Now an example of a flip side...
DaWebMassa's Warehouse theme... the higher res theme donned a 10 rating while the 1024 counterpart earned a 9. However in the download stats, the 1024 has had slightly better results.

Make your own judgement call, but I'd say go at it in 1280x1024 if you are comfortable viewing it yourself.

why do you guys like the higher resulutions? If i use 1024 x 768 I have to squint to read the screen.
