Start 11 v1.2 beta 4, Windows 11 22000.556, Windows 10 style taskbar - issues with the Start, Widget and Search buttons on a Surface Laptop Studio- the buttons are responsive to touch input when using fingers, but not when using the Surface Pen. All's ok if "Let Start11 enhance the taskbar" is disabled.

@NeilB Couldn't respond to your question as the 1.17 beta thread is now closed, but yes apps in the taskbar are responsive. Additionally, pen input isn't working  for any of the tray items either.

Edit: I can reproduce this issue 100% on a Surface Book2 and a Samsung Galaxy Book360 using the latest Beta 4 build

Edit2: Custom start buttons respond to pen input (and only the start button, the widget, search and tray icons are still unresponsive), but start button again stops responding once I turn the "Use a custom start button image" button off

Any thoughts re this?

BUG: Wrong windowlet when hovering over a toolbar icon (very intermittent)

Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce that at will, but observed many times with 1.16b and now 1.18b (skipped 1.17b). Hovering over a taskbar button often opens the windowlet card of the program next to it. The issue fixes itself with any program starting or closing. For example, opening the snap tool, which added its icon to the taskbar, sorted the order out.

I'll use any suggestions to narrow it down, but I see no pattern so far.

In the shot below, the only open programs are Notepad++, Slack and two windows of Firefox (they dyed the firefox' fur blue in the Developer Ed.). Hovering over Slack shows Notepad++ card, as pictured; Notepad++ has no card at all, and Firefox shows two windowlet cards for each of its windows as expected.

The Slack icon has a solid highlight rectangle of a very slightly brighter color, indicating hover. It's hard to note on the picture w/o magnification. This is where I rested the mouse pointer. Seems that the icon that is hovered over is detected correctly, but the window card that is popping up is wrong.

The screenshot was scaled 2:1 to compensate for the 200% display scaling. The Start button was immediately to the left to the Edge pin.

Update: Apparently, the Slack window is minimized, and has been since the notebook was brought up from sleep. Slack windowlet card has a border with only a window title, but its client area is all black. I just realized I didn't open it since opening the lid, and was only using FF and took notes in Notepad++, switching between the two using keyboard shortcuts. May be a clue?

Configuration

  • OS: Windows 22000.556, x64
  • Start11 1.18b in Windows 10 mode with Start11 toolbar enhancement enabled.
  • HP Spectre 360 16" notebook with Intel XeLP on-package GPU (Gen11, Tiger Lake H), driver 30.0.100.9864.
  • Single display (notebook's own panel), 3840×2400 native, with 200% "enhanced" scaling (the default, as opposed to "legacy" 8.1-compatible scaling, going by the name "Custom scaling" in Windows 10 and 11 System/Display options).
  • Generally, Start11 is set up to retain Windows 10 look and functionality, except Windows 11 search is used. In particular, the toolbar is left-aligned.
  • Taskbar icon behavior is set to "Always merge."

I confirm this too. Usually when I center the taskbar it happens. Put it back to left and restart explorer to fix it.

Awesome stuff, I now only need one application to fix all of Windows 11s UI issues instead of 3.

Some feedback:

1. Centre preview with uncombined taskbar tabs

Currently does this:

Would be nice if it does this:

2. Ability to change 'Close all windows' to 'Close window' or to have both even would be handy

(Just saw this was previously mentioned in the last page, want to second it either way)

Keep up the good work.

Quoting Neil Banfield,

Quoting pelaird,

Start 11 ver 1.18 does not load all Startup items on Windows 10.

After the startup process begins, the screen flashes (not normal behavior) and then starts, but does not load all the Startup items. There are also many other startup items which are not normally displayed in the System Tray which are not loading.

Start 11 ver. 1.18 (above)

Start 11 ver. 1.17 (above)

System Info.

Edition Windows 10 Pro

Version 21H2

Installed on ‎2/‎29/‎2020

OS build 19044.1620

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0

Start11 should have no impact what so ever on that.  It doesn't extend the taskbar and neither does it launch or display those icons.

I would recommend a reboot and see if it continues to be an issue.  The most likely explanation would be explorer crashed at some point and those apps didn't recreate their taskbar buttons.

I rebooted several times to see if that had any impact and it did not.

It's not that the icons are not displayed in the System Tray, the Startup items are not loaded! None of the Startup items are loaded including MS OneDrive, Logitech Logi Options, iTunes Helper, Epson Status monitor, etc. They each have to be started manually after a reboot. This is a new issue with the update to 1.18.

I created a Restore Point before the update and after running the restore to 1.17, everything is working as it should.

This same thing started happening here,  Windows 10 2021 LTSC, it started happening on version 1.18.  I can also see like something crashed because I see the old start menu for a moment, then white flashes and then Start11 comes back but all my startup items are gone.  No iCue, no screencapture, no nothing.   This was working great on version 1.17

Quoting pelaird,

There are multiple errors in the event viewer. The Reliability Monitor shows Windows Explorer crashing upon each reboot. There is one instance of the StartMenuExperienceHost.exe crashing.

That's what was suspected - now to see if you still see them if 1.18 is not installed or the Start11 service is disabled and you restart.

The same is happening here,  Windows 10 2021 LTSC, no errors whatsoever when Start11 is not installed.  This started happening on the last version,  1.17 was perfect.

The lack of icons suggests a design flaw with those apps not respecting a restart of explorer and recreating their icons.

That said obviously explorer should not be crashing. (StartMenuExperienceHost isn't an app we interact with so that crashing is all on Microsoft)

We are looking into it, but if anyone can provide a dmp file from a crash it would be most helpful.

This request was posted near the bottom of the previous feedback thread , and I'm repeating it because behavior is unchanged in b4:

2. Can you make the taskbar to function the way that if you have stuff opened there(chrome etc), and you have your mouse pointer at the bottom of the window you can't click on it as if you were clicking below it. Basically can you extent the size of the "items" on the taskbar so it fill the taskbar all the way to the bottom, the same way as the start button?

I'd like to second this request.

The original design intent of the taskbar, dating back to Win95, is to provide "infinitely tall" navigation targets - that is, you can simply throw the pointer at the bottom of the screen (for a normally oriented taskbar) and be guaranteed to not "miss" a button by going below it.

This is the behavior for the date/time and the notification icon area, and is what gives a corner-positioned Start button both an infinitely wide and infinitely tall target - all you need to do is throw the mouse in that corner (with no precision at all) and you're guaranteed to be over the Start button.

I am not quite sure where to post this, but I am on the 1.18 beta and have noticed that the icons do not resize when a new size is selected.  Maybe that is corrected in the 1.2 beta, but so far I have not been able to get to that link.

Which icons are you talking about in particular?

There is no 1.2.  1.18 IS the 1.2 beta.

It affects all icons in any group unless you re-select them one at a time and force them to reset.  The menu does not seem to change anything.  For example, in this screenshot the first and last three icons were reloaded by the "Pick Custom Icon" option.  The whole group is set to large, and my overall icon size is set to large.  Changing this at either the group or overall level has no effect on the size of icons in a group.

All my images are 512x512 PNG and the previous versions seemed to resize correctly

You can see this in the overall menu where all icons are set to Large but only those forced to reset individually actually reset.

Do you have the option to enable experimental loading up of tile images set?

In 1.18 anything with tile images / custom images will produce smaller images than before and there is a bug where it will not use the larger size unless you set the caption to hidden on each icon rather than on the entire group.  Does this sound like the issue you are having?

Yes and I tried it both ways with no noticeable changes.

I have also just discovered that on the drive list you see on the bottom line that a change in the drive label does not carry through to Start11 and seems to be stuck.  I tried deleting the icon in Start11 and then adding it back with no luck.  This is a minor nuisance for me, but for others it might be something bigger.

OK - It has something to do with the combination of the text and sizing.  I went back and turned on the text captions for all menu items and they suddenly resized correctly.  If you turn text back off, then they revert to the mixed sizes you saw in the other screenshot.

Maybe this helps

My dears,

I decided to re-install this last beta to test and for me it is working to my satisfaction, the only detail I noticed is that the translation is very poorly done to my native language, pt-BR, I would like to know if there is any updated file of its translation or if you can make it available or if there is an official translation forum.

A big hug.

Interesting tool, cool to see more and more mroe tools bringing ungouping back to windows 11.

Was testing the beta today, any way to disable this animation of buttons in the task bar plopping in?

I don't like animations in general would be great to be able to disable them all!

And an other question, can i use this tool to align the taskbar on each monitor on a different edge? Am only testing in VM so no multi monitor there lol

PS: is it possible to get a windows xp style cascading menu for the all programs?

I found one other thing, and maybe this is "as intended" and I did not understand

These two icons are obviously on the same row and the default is set to "Large"

If I turn the text "off" then any icon resizes larger, if set to "on" then the icon shrinks

My guess would be that the area occupied by the Icon and Text is computed as one item and not as two

Both of these images are 512x512 PNGs
