WindowBlinds 11 planning

WindowBlinds 11 planning

We are putting together the schedule to make WindowBlinds 11.

Customization is a lot harder now than it used to be.  Microsoft, for reasons unknown, has actively encouraged developers to take care of their own client and even non client (border, frame) painting rather than using standard Windows controls.

Microsoft's baffling decision to throw away trying to provide a standard set of in-app controls for developers and instead provide vague, often conflicting standards (cough, Fluent) has resulted in having less and less of the OS we can even touch.

Which is unfortunate because WindowBlinds, in theory, could actually give Windows users a consistent, OS-wide Fluent if apps weren't handling the drawing of their own UIs these days.

Still, with that in mind, there are things we can do such as skin the standard OS controls and then handle apps on a case-by-case basis.  Keep in mind though, the more non-standard apps we have to handle, the harder it is for us to keep compatibility.

Earlier this year we released Curtains which doesn't even hook into the OS.  This means it is 100% compatible. Skins, even the weirdest ones, won't break a given app.  Of course, the price is that it doesn't skin nearly as much (no client area GUI controls like scrollbars, push buttons, radio buttons, etc.).  It's done quite well.  However, we know there are still plenty of people out there who would like to have more full control over how their Windows desktop looks.

That's where this thread comes in: What would you like to see in WindowBlinds 11?

Anyone actually jumping on 11 already needs [as my father would say] "their head read"...

I tried it briefly on my HP 2-in-1 but it did not run too well, being it has a small CPU and just 4 gigs of RAM.  11 looks okay but it requires a better machine to run efficiently, and right now all my desktop machines are off-line due to ongoing desk modifications.  I'll give 11 another go when I've finished upgrading my desk and those machines are once again on-line.

As for getting my head read, the last shrink who tried to read it broke down in tears and referred me to a colleague while making an urgent appointment for himself.  He reckoned he'd never been so confused or distracted.

Hello neone6

I have just looked at your windowblind "Tron"  and it it is similar but not the same, i would never share something i have not created myself, this came from a site dealing in skin packs, so if after looking at yours

https://skins16.wincustomize.com/43/21/4321310/1/7726/preview-1-7726.jpg

You still see the one i am using as your work, i have left enough info in my reply to chase this up.

neon6 , just for future reference, if you could create the skinpack you see i am using , and change it to Electric Green instead of blue, then i would Buy it from you in a second.

If those graphics are truly yours, even though they differ in many ways, in many sections, please create a Green Version and make it available for WB 11, and i will be first to get out my Card and purchase.

Now you have really got my attention, Exact same one i am using in Green would be brilliant.

It's not going to slow it down either. As I said to Don. Why are you upset because we have a difference of opinion?
Why would you think I am upset.  If anything, I'm amused.

Well, I have one main rig with 10. For testing WindowBlinds for a few artists.  All the rest of my 5 machines run Windows 11. I have only one issue on the triple monitor system and that is that the taskbar and taskbar icons get wonky on the third screen, fixed by changing the view from 100% to anything else, then back.  Just saying.

And yes, it's obvious that Neone6 graphics were used in the screenshot.

neone6.

I love your work and have purchased dark skins in the past from you, if you can create the exact one i am using, (thought about how to word this correctly without giving offence as it's the last thing on my mind) in Green and not your original (just a preference) , like i said, i will be first in the Que with my Credit Card.

Very sorry about coming upon your stolen work, you have my word it will not move further than my computer, if you need anything including the file i used for the theme and extras, just let me know and i will pass it over to you.

Windows 11 is not that much different than windows 7. Lots of similarities especially in the UI. Obviously no aero glass if and when Windows blinds comes out I could easily see a proverbial clone Windows 7. I would not be using 11 of one of my engineering programs didn't require either Windows 10 or 11. Since I've never used 10 other than in work. It only makes sense to update to 11 if that's the new version and if I have to adapt to it there is no sense in going to 10 and only to have to adapt to 11 sometime in the future. I do find it humorous that the famous ribbon that Microsoft touted it's now gone. I remember in the office beta having Microsoft Engineers tell me that I was wrong and the ribbon is the proverbial Alpha and Omega. Lol it's still funny.

Just hoping at the very least, we can have aero glass from vista/7 with working reflections (moving the window and the reflection/shine moves too) replicated, and a working aero glow for the taskbar. We kinda have that with windows blinds 10? But it more glows the accent color rather than a color from the icon.

I haven’t read the full 13 pages, so sorry if I repeat something.
My suggestions for WindowBlinds 11:

1. Improve scaling e.g. for people who use 4k.

2. Give us some true Windows Styles out of the box, preferably Vista and Windows 7.

I'm certain that Stardock cannot supply an actual, true, Vista or Windows 7 Style.  However, there are artists renditions of those OSes in the WindowBlinds gallery.

I have an Object Desktop subscription that is expiring and currently costs $20 to renew. The Retail price is $50.

When it first came out, with Win7, I subscribed to OD because I could download and run nearly a dozen different apps.

Over time, this has cut back to Startxx and Windowblinds -- which means they cost me $10 each, more than the $5 (?) for Startxx alone but not enough to matter for me.

But I don't really want to keep paying the OD renewal year after year, hoping that WB 11 will eventually be released.

And there is the dilemma -- if I let OD subscription die, then it will cost me (at least)  $50 to get it down the road when WB11 gets released. Or, I keep paying $20 a year for basically Start11 -- which while not a LOT, is bothersome because as some have pointed out here, there are NOW some really good Start Menu alternatives that are free.

And then, we get a post claiming the 2023 for Windowblinds was a "typo" and it is really 2022. So, as long as it really does come out next year, then my $20 renewal will get me WB 11.  But, as beaten to death here in this thread, there are no fine-grained accurate predictions of WB 11 availability.

An yeah, I know it's not a lot of money, I just don't like paying for something I'm not going to get.

Mark, without a 100% guarantee I can still say it's a safe bet your next sub will see you with WB11.  Arguably the only qualifier on that is whether Microsoft radically changes their OS in the meantime.

Nothing can be certain, not when compatibility with an OS can be outside your control...;)

There are a lot of apps in ObectDesktop that currently work fine on Windows 11.

I am running WindowFX, CursorFX, Multiplicity, DeskScapes, Start 11, IconPackager, SpaceMonger, SoundPackager, and I understand that Fences works as well.

deary me, Curtains was working fine on windows 11, which part of this thread highlights why it was canned in it's current form. It was the main reason for me getting object desktop over just ignoring it altogether and cobbling a start menu with whatever else pops up.

Curtains worked great, is there an option to re-enable it for windows 11 and have no support for it? I was going fine, as I am sure some others were too. :/

wizmarky, Did you not have unpainted (transparent) titlebars with Curtains on 11?  I did, on multiple rigs, hmm.

You will do.  The exception being universal apps and explorer windows.

I t worked well for what I needed and used, was my point. I dont have a need for a million different apps and the theming in curtains helped adjust to dark mode properly for my busted old eyesworked though

Pardon me for being confused, but, I'm confused...lol.

You will do?  Typo?   For me explorer windows were transparent. But still reacted to the cursor.

The only issues I ever had were the occasional windows grey (blinding white to me) menus via some apps. I used less of those apps (filezilla...) and found nice alternatives that worked with windows 11 and curtains

I know and they are great, I use one of those right now which resemble Vista, but they are not perfect.
