Another problematic update for Windows...with a fix and no, iOS isn't in the cards, just yet.

KB4556799 is the problem causer this time.

"TechRadar reports several issues that people have flagged on Microsoft Community and answer posts, including the Blue Screen of Death, white screen flickering, system fonts being replaced, systems switching back to S-mode, and Outlook search issues. Windows Latest adds that some people have audio issues as well as the reappearance of the Temporary user profile bug"

There a fix...so if this happens to you, I hope this will be of help

Thanks for sending the link, Hank.

Damn, the fix ends in a "Reset This PC"?   Holy crap!

Thanks Doc and Hank!

I have that update , but don't see any issues from it ............................................. yet ?

Don't worry. Gates is working on a Covid-19 vaccine that will also reset your PC.

No issues here either, not doing that "fix".

BSOD. Now that was fun! X( And I have the windows explorer restarting without any reason but one I have found to be if a disk is in sleep mode and I click it, explorer restarts. I've had errors like that & BSOD back in the day when that happend to most users from time to time, but been years, I think, since I've seen it. Have no choice but to try resetting, but thats a 50/50 % in my experience. Shait.

I will first uninstall the patch & then do the reset. Think I've had more success doing that.

I'll be back, eventually...

The reset seems to have worked. I'm gonna hold off a few days in the future with updates. Not worth the hassle.

Glad the reset worked for you.

Restore didn't work got a total windows crash . Windows didn't let me uninstall the bad update .Now Ill have to wipe and reinstall windows and start all over .and have to re install a lot of stuff to get back to my normal. Should be done enough to be back by tomorrow .

So be aware people no one may be safe who installed that update.

I just check my updates KB4556799 was installed on 5/13 and I haven't had any problems. I don't know why it effects different computers.

Same here Al, I've got my fingers crossed though, and I did make a restore point before this happed, so hopefully if it does, I can restore, if not, then the good old reinstall.... :(

Don I just checked my computer made a Restore Point on that day it was installed, but it doesn't tell me if it was before or after the update. Could always go into the update history and uninstall it.

I had a restore for the 11th when I did the restore the PC did the restore but on reboot went right to blue screen no F keys worked to get back in and a bootable flash drive didn't work. So looks like only complete Windows reinstall is the only fix.

I use to have a virus program that didn't let me do a system restore because it thought something was messing with the OS.

One should always create a restore point before updating, and since updates have been so unreliable, I've been backing up, as well. This update didn't screw me up. perhaps luck, or because I do an sfc /scannow once a month.

I got the update on 5/12 and no problems at all. *_* so far......

That's a good idea!!!

I've not had this issue since the latest update.... but having said that I'm likely to get it because I read this thread and tempted fate.

*_* O:)

Fingers crossed that I remain free of this BSOD issue.  Apart from BSODs not being a good look on the screen, it can be so time consuming trying to fix them.  At least now I will know the cause and what to do about it if it happens to me.

As for doing a monthly scf /scannow check, that's a great idea, as is creating regular sys restore points.  I've made occasional sys restore point over the years but never regularly.... and I only ever performed a sfc /scannow whenever I had an issue with a corrupt or missing file.

So many thanks, Doc, for this thread and the timely reminder to take care of maintenance and issue prevention more regularly.... I've not had an issue in quite a while so I have gotten a bit slack lately..

Here's an easy way to create a restore point with one click with a short cut. No reg hack.

Here is the code if you want to do this. Copy everything as shown.

cmd.exe /k "Wmic.exe /Namespace:\\root\default Path SystemRestore Call CreateRestorePoint "%DATE%", 100, 7"

Here's' the how to video

What blows my mind is, I have 13 PCs here, all up to date, all have the menace update. No issues yet on any.

My W10 is refusing to install that update , keep telling me to update and then it FAIL :w00t:

The only good is I'm working on Linux and use W10 only for play games that don't run under W10 :)

But I think I will have to reinstall it , but I will wait for next ISO to do it.
