I am still having the problem that on some of my touchpads/computers, I can't 2 finger scroll in fences

no 2 finger scroll with touchpad

Some computers have it some don't.  All computers do the 2 finger scroll on webpages, file managers, text editors, apps and softwares, etc.  However there are some computers which do not have 2 finger scrolling in the fences.  Namely Asus and Razer Blade.  I think it may be a difference in the touch pad drivers where Elan do not.

However the Elan touch pads do scroll on most apps as I said in the first line.  Synaptics touch pads seem to have no problem scrolling in fences.  I think this remains a mystery that is unsolved since I first brought it up in late 2018.

I did notice that my Synaptics touch pad has lost the ability to 2 finger scroll in fences when it has only been moved over the fence, and not clicked on the fence yet.  I did no Windows update, and no fences update for this change to occur.  This is a bad change.  I prefer when I can 2 finger scroll just from moving into the fence, but not clicking it.  It may have something to do with an update to the Rainmeter exe.   I have been looking at my having updated the Rainmeter .exe I am using.  This is possibly the only change to my one Synaptics touch pad computer.  However I still do not install the Rainmeter .exe and only run it as a portable executable that I keep in my taskbar.  This may be a source of some of the issues.  Perhaps a starting point for software designers would be to try to work with the Rainmeter which is also a very important desktop customization program.

Again it seems that Elan drivers which do run with 2 finger scrolling on all apps and such, are the problem here and that would be the second point that Fences software developers would need to look at.  I should add that I have a brand new subscription and have bee using the newest fences software on a Razer Blade computer with a Razer Blade Pro touchpad, which I think very closely resembles the Elan touch pad on an Asus ROG I use at work.

I'm having the same problem. My system: Dell Inspiron 7577 laptop with Windows Precision touchpad drivers

Working:

- scrolling Folder Portals

Not working:

- scrolling any normal fences

- Alt+Scrolling desktop pages

- two-finger-sideways-swipe scrolling destop pages

All the not-working features work perfectly with an external mouse.

Are any fixes in the works? Fences' incompatibility with touchpads seems to have been a problem since 2016, at least, judging by these old forum posts:

As I think I said twice before, it would be good if they would get the ones with Elan touchpads working like the ones with Synaptics touchpads.  Lenovo with Synaptic works great to two finger scroll in fences.  Elan touchpads of the Asus and Razer (Microsoft? or Razer Pro? is the driver? ...anyways) for instance don't scroll inside the fence.  This is working as you said just fine with the external mouse.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. No update on this issue yet that I know of.

I uninstalled Fences, as it was very clunky, and didn't work with the Windows Precision touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 7577. Surely it would just be some sort of registry switch, to apply the settings used for other touchpad drivers to Windows Precision drivers.

When Community Assistants forward concerns to Stardock Support, do they actually give a shit to address individual concerns? This generic "I have forwarded your questions/problems" line suggests there's nothing that be done outside of Stardock direct support, but there's nothing I or anyone else can do except post endlessly in these forums as Stardock will not allow direct email support inquiries for anything short of licensing issues.

Just in case our Community Assistants can actually forward this to a level it'll ever be resolved, I have a mid-2019 Razer Blade base model with Windows Precision Touchpad drivers and cannot scroll at all with two-finger scroll. I don't know enough to try using Synaptics drivers to see if they'll help at all.

Honestly, I'm pretty close to uninstalling Fences and looking for alternatives. I really like the concept and got a key from a Humble Bundle, but V4's wishlist is over a year and a half in coming with no release in sight, and every issue like two-finger scroll and the annoying automatic placement have been met with silence or "it's impossible to fix in the current framework" bullshit. All in all, it's starting to seem like Stardock is inept and has too many projects to handle with their manpower and expertise (or lack thereof).

So if anyone knows any good alternatives, I'd greatly appreciate some suggestions!

Does it indeed work if you do click in the Fence first? Do the scrollbars for a Fence appear in any circumstance?

The scrollbars are always displayed and they do enlarge if I run the pointer over the actual bar, but the scroll still won't work. Nor it will if I click on the fence. However, if I trigger a scrolling motion somewhere else, e. g. by scrolling on my browser, and alt+tab fast enough (and have my cursor strategically pre-placed on a fence), then it will capture the scroll.

We do indeed...

Funny way of showing it, using Community Assistants to give the same copy/pasted replies and refusing to provide any actual direct support for your software.

In any case, I realize the question was not directed at me, but in my experience with Windows Precision drivers, two-finger scroll does not work even after clicking inside the fence, the scrollbar does appear and can be clicked and dragged to scroll, and scrolling with a mouse wheel works when hovering before clicking on every mouse I've connected.

I also discovered that auto-arrangement of icons on the desktop outside of fences is a Windows setting that Fences automatically turned on when installed (which is annoying as hell, but not the end of the world).

Is that the case with Folder Portals too or do they work without the need to do anything special?

Thank you for the feedback.

I never used Folder Portals prior to this, but testing right now, touchpad scrolling (I also use Precision drivers) on them seems to work flawlessly.

Folder portals have quite a few advantages, not the least of which is more view options:

They also do better with temp files created for applications while the original is open for edit (all MS Office apps do this for example). Temp files can mess with how Fences deals with the original icons in a Fence - often bumping them out as Fences sees them as new\ different once saved.

One of the main advantages, and pictured above, is you can open a folder portal to any mapped network location - a centralized one for example.  In the image above, anyone here can get to that folder and add \ remove \ edit files there.

So, as a workaround, what you could do is create folders that match your Fence names - say in your Documents folder - and drop your icons in them, then create folder portals to them.  Any new icons you place on your desktop can be dragged \ dropped there henceforth.

Well, manually moving icons every time a new one is created seems to be too much of a task, it almost beats the purpose. TBH, I rather stick with the non-scrolling, but automatic fences. Also, I not only have icons, but files and folders on my desktop as well and moving them to new folders would mean adjusting a lot of other applications.

Also, I feel I should add to what threePwny said that I'm also very displeased that a paid software has this much delay on such a major update. I've been watching this and a few other threads waiting for fixes for a few months now and not a single one has seen any progress whatsoever. I still like Fences because it's better than nothing, but the sensation of users being disregarded is real and worthy of some abandonware on GitHub.

Just thought I'd chime in to confirm (thought I'd already posted this here; might have been another thread):

Touchpad Scrolling works within Folder Portals

Touchpad Scrolling does not work within normal Fences

Touchpad Scrolling does not work to "switch desktops" (i.e. if your fences extend off onto another page)

All of these work if you use a desktop mouse. I use a Windows Precision touchpad.

Synaptics touchpads work for 2 finger scrolling in fences.  Elan do not.  This is just in my experience.  There could be plenty of exceptions.

We mentioned we use neither. We were discussing Precision drivers, which are the modern Windows standard.

Please for the love of god fix this, as we are not asking for a feature we are asking for a bug fix, and quite a substantial one!

How long does it have to take to do a spike, turn it into a story, get it QAd, and turn it into a release? (I am a developer myself)

Definitely not half a year!

It makes me reconsider purchasing if this is the kind of support you offer.

I'm having the same problem as everyone in this thread

Why do you keep selling it if you don't support it anymore? You are doing nothing to solve the problem!
