Guys, we need to know whether Fences 4 is coming any time soon.

I'm considering buying Object Desktop, but I first need that information.

Thanks.

It would be cool if multiple monitors could be handled better.  If Fences could somehow determine that a graphics driver update has occurred and restore the previous layout instead of dropping everything back onto one monitor.  That would be a really neat feature.

Yes - I have with this big problem...

I'm using 3 desktops and want to add 4th but to the left side of all three.
So, it will move Fences and I have no choice only to manually to correct them - or (I found not yet order in) modify snapshot backup data. Very useful feature can be "send Fence to another monitor" - even problem is when I disconnect monitor by mistake and it does big disorder - after connection helps not always snapshot restoring, if not it needs only cold reset without logoff or anything similar - simply power-off computer and boot again... this needs fix and enhance. Even - since exist dark scheme, my Fences at each File Explorer restart/crash set black color of titles, I'm using normal scheme (not light, not dark) and I need always to open Fences config to adjust title colors.

I have a question, this (Forum) has been going on since Dec 4, 2018, is anything being done, as far an upgrade to Fences?

Yeah I asked this 2 weeks ago, you're now the 3rd person to ask this with no reply yet. Hopefully you being a long term user might get an answer for the rest of us.

It does seem silly to keep this Forum open, if nothing is going to be done! I've seen tons of great ideas in areas of improvements to Fences, so I'd think by now, Stardock would acknowledge they've gotten some great ideas, in how they can improve Fences, and then move on,  but, nothing has been said one way or another, Stardock should at the very least let people know that they are working on new updates for fences, then "Close" this Forum, just my humble opinion. |-)

Why close the forum?, there are lots of good ideas!
As a developer myself, a lot of tiresome work goes into any quality product that's useful for a large community. Fences has personally restored my desktop sanity - making it easier to function in a Windows environment that hasn't changed much from Win95. (Briefcase anybody?)
Rock on Jeff B! You do you at your speed. I'm sure V4 will be ready when it's ready. ;) But for now, thank you for V3! It does the job.

Why keep it open for eternity, a developer can't glean enough ideas from over a years worth of ideas/input?

I never said it didn't take hard work, and time to create a quality product, unless, that's your defense for the open ended Forum ideas, I don't know, because I'm not a developer.

I'm done, Peace out!

  • A shortcut that would bring fences to the foreground and (optionally) unroll all fences. :D
  • A fence portal to a specific Steam and Library.
  • Windows independent shortcut caching to solve issues with lag / missing icons when opening a fence with A LOT of 512x512 / 256x256  icons.:banhammer:
  • Ability to use icons / pngs / emoticons in the Fence's Title / lable. ^_^
  • Stardock overall themes integration would be nice (windowblinds, icons, cursos, etc.).

Also. I think that's a bit unrealistic to develop / market Fences (or any other stardock product) for the Business users. I've been here from the start of stardock and when I "hear" stardock I think - Customization, Pretty desktops, Icon's, cool features and unfortunately bugs. I think you're better off to market / develop to Steam / gaming  users who are more then willing to provide free feedback (and are normally very vocal) and actually like the idea of what Stardock has to offer. On the other side I've been an IT dept. director of a big group and I know that my bosses would LAUGH at the idea of buying licenses from a Stardock product. No offense. Just an opinion.

User-configurable time delay for automatic roll-up of individual fences.  (Sometimes I want the fence to roll up immediately.  Sometimes I'd prefer it stay unrolled for a few moments)

The ability to password-protect individual fences.

That's a thought...;)

I've got two suggestions:

1. I've got portals which have a huge amount of folders. When I choose list as the sorting option I can only scroll horizontal although vertical scrolling would allow me to find folders with a beginning letter much faster.

2. That one is annoying me: When I open a folder my sorting option is nullified. When opening big folders it looks like a mess with normal symbols while my root folder still uses the more clean looking list.

Actually, another one. No idea if this is possible, but if you could bring up your fences for the while your press a specific button it would be pretty neat and a little smoother than going to your desktop.

Fences should not rollup automatically as soon as the mouse leaves its boundaries, but should have a delay of X milliseconds, so if your mouse happens to travel outside of the fence (which is a VERY common scenario), it won't rollup and make you have to go back up and bring it down again.

A variable that can be set to delay the rolling up function of a fence when the mouse leaves the area.

The ability to backup & export custom rule sets in order to save time if OS reinstallation is ever needed.

Whole backup of all incl. layout with option to select what to restore will be really great.
Currently I go to reinstall Windows and I hope that I found all locations in system and registry to restore it manually.

When backing out of folder portal it would be nice if the up arrow was always in the same location so i don't have to bounce around with it due to the length of the folder description.

We're in the process of implementing Fences in a medium/large enterprise environment.  Great product that could be much better - and likely more widely adopted - with some additional functionality that assists in the standardization and deployment of the product:

  • Allow for the full export/import of all configuration information.  Currently you can export/import an XML file but that provides only fence names and locations.  Ideally the export/import functionality would include fence information as well as rules/colors/etc.
  • Implementing the above with a better interface for 'profiles' - the /oemlayout switch is a great start but could be greatly improved.
  • Provide for a mechanism that enforces certain standards for fences but allows users to change other aspects.
