GC3 Founders: Crusade Preview

GC3 Founders: Crusade Preview

Greetings GalCiv Founders.

This week, we will be announcing Galactic Civilizations III: Crusade.

Here are the six major bullet points:

#1 Civilization Builder

Players can, from the main menu, design a civilization from scratch.  That includes the default ships they use, what they say in diplomacy and how the AI will make use of them.

Crusade-2 Crusade-30

Completed civilizations can then be uploaded to Steam workshop for others to download.  This differs from the custom race feature in GalCiv III in that this is all-inclusive – ships, techs, flavor text, everything in a single package.

#2 Citizens

This is the most far-reaching change we’ve made to Galactic Civilizations.  The production wheel is gone. Both the the planet and globally.  Instead, you will customize your civilization based on what you do with your citizens.

Crusade-6

Citizens are born on your home world every so often.  What you do with them is up to you.  You can train them as leaders, spies, diplomats, merchants, scientists, engineers, technicians, etc.  It all depends on how you want to run your civilization.

The screenshot above is misleading because it only shows the 3 default specializations (production, research, wealth) but others will be showing up as well as the game progresses (such as shipyard building, etc.).

You can also send citizens to specific worlds to boost their production in a particular area.

#3 Espionage

This works somewhat similarly to GalCiv II.  You can use spies to learn what other civilizations are up to and steal their tech and  you can use them to disable important planetary improvements.  You can also use them to eliminate spies that show up on your planets.

#4 Invasions

No screenshot for this yet, it’s programmer art.  Invasions now require a lot more thought and effort than before and also are interactive.

First, soldiers come from your citizenry.  You can’t just load up population from a given planet and send them over.  Instead, they come from your available citizens.  You can also train citizens to be soldiers which makes them that much more effective.  Of course, once a citizen is killed, it’s gone forever.

When you invade a planet, you get a map of the planet and have to decide where you’re going to land your troops.  If the defender has citizens on that planet (and often, they will not making invasion pretty easy), they will get to place their defenders.  Neither side knows where the other has placed their units until the battle begins.

The invasions are, in effect, a very fun mini game.  Late game, when the stakes get really high, the invasions become pretty nail biting.

#5 Crusade

Crusade is the story that puts it all together.  It introduces a few civilizations and finally gives the player a clear understanding of why the Altarians and Humans are similar. What the Bane is.  Why the Thalan went back in time back to stop the humans and so forth.

#6 New UX

Across the board the user experience is being updated.  The  units look better, the user interface is new, the way things work is cleaner.  Overall, the goal is to make the game more approachable to new players as well as make it much easier to deal with a larger empire.

Crusade-1[6]

I will be writing, at length, a series of dev diaries over the major features for Crusade.  One per week.

Stay tuned.

Obviously SD needed more time to polish the beta build... so hopefully today?

Either way I have no time for it today so if it does enjoy! I'll look again tomorrow to see if it has actually showed up.

So what's the chances of a founders beta over the weekend?

:)

If I was Stardock, I would say something like "Founders will be given acces to Crusade expansion...soon!"   O:)

Unties my hands and gives a realistic timeframe, whatever that timeframe is and provides flexibility, plus it's communication.

Now, if people keep asking how soon is soon etc., to that I don't reply and everyone is happy. They're working on it, that's all we really need to know.

Maybe they should release some graphics(like screens with the new traits and such), or Brad's idea on pdf. Maybe it will keep some people happy.

Let's doubt ourselves a little...what if they don't even have time to "communicate" like some of you said, cause they're working THAT hard? Unrealistic???

It's not the end of the world. I promiss.

Edit: If any followed the discord link before it expired, happy gaming.

Still on the Discord chat.  Frogboy is still working on it.  Last update approx an hour ago.

Erichild, did you get into the chat?

Yes, he did. Be sure to pop on today to see if you can grab a key from Frogboy!

Okey What now?>

This is stupid- i mean STUPID!

The Discord chat link was ended so fast as it was created. you can cheese your way into it using bypass that's mentioned in the Discord topic.
Now I don't want to be cocky or rude and I do apoligise If i get on someones nerves BUT!!!

I am an Elite founder and WE do have Founders Vault so why not post Beta password there or do some other magic woodoo. Stardock website already knows if you are regular or Elite founder- check if you are- password generated and sent- simple!

Why go through all the trouble with woodoo- catch and wait Frogboy or whomever on chat hoping to get keys- I mean that's nonsense. Not everyone has time to babysit that and by all means its very disrespectful. I (and others) paid and did my share long way back- if this is how Stardock now treats me so I can peak-test the Crusades- and we are talking a small % of Elite founders- than Whats Stardock better than EA or Blizzard or any other such company.

I am a loyal Stardockian, i promote their games to my family and friends- defend and criticize where its needed but this is wrong. Do it proper for Founders or Elite founders or don't do it at all!

I am also a Founder Elite and have been unable to get the "Discord" thing to work, and it looks like many others have had trouble with it as well.

Brad, how about calling the "Discord" thing a failed experiment and go back to something already tried and true.

I got on Discord last night, and it has its advantages and disadvantages.

Being a chat tool, it's very easy to communicate with Brad and the other developers who were on it last night.  You can drag and drop files onto it, which was very convenient for sharing debug.err files and screen shots; Brad fixed a few problem last night from that.

But, being a chat tool, I'm afraid that the problems we're discussing right now will get missed by the developers, since none of them appear to be on it now, and there's a lot for them to read back through, equal amounts wheat and chaff.

I think discourse is great, the real issue is just that Stardock and Brad specifically in this case is overloaded. If they had more time, any platform would work. Look at the upside of the situation, they are overloaded due to all the great games in the pipeline.

Given they have a system that can identify Founders (that's how this forum works after all) it makes you wonder why they didn't use that and just to send beta codes to everyone in that list either to their emails associated with their accounts or just PMed them on the forum itself. Seems like an easier way to do it rather than having someone go through a chat log on Discord to hunt down links, check each link back to this forums then send them a PM on discord.

Well, Brad said on Discord last night that one reason he didn't want it sent out to all founders yet was that QA had not had a chance to test it at all, as was quickly shown when we found out that a needed file was not shipped to Steam, and a whole bunch of descriptive text is missing.

I don't really see why that matters.

Because some folks will overreact to it not being polished enough.

Prob less of a concern with founders, but you never know these days- customers think they're always right even when they're not.

And what if they do overreact? If that is such a huge concern they should just continue to work on the beta before letting Founders in.

Hi guys.

I'm pretty new to discord so the expiring thing was not by intent but rather apparently a default behavior fo that app.

Here's a link that claims it won't expire.

BTW, the issue isn't polish.

One of the boring basic things that QA does is make sure all the files are actually put on the server.

Based on the handful of people I gave copies to, some of the text files weren't up[loaded and the game is assuming you have, at least, the Precursor DLC.

I was up all night last night working on it and it's 11:39pm now.  Most of what I do I don't think most people would think is important but it's AI stuff and insane map performance that i"m focusing on right now.

Thanks for the quick update and all your efforts trying to give us something, I play almost exclusively on insane map sizes and with as many AIs as possible, so I am really looking forward to the performance improvements.

I have to agree here. Its one thing to wait and check the forums here and there, but now you have to get a new account (on a tool many of us have likely never used), ask for a key...wait, wait....maybe Brad didn't see my request...do I check PMs in discord or in the forum?.....hmm, I wonder how long this will take....maybe Brad didn't see my request...etc

It just seems like a whole layer of extra work and uncertainty. If the version is not ready for testing so be it. If Brad needs a few key founders that he trusts to try an unstable version than just PM them. But if we want founders to go to work on this thing, lets just put it in the founders forum and be done with it.

The reason may be that we have a founders forum, but not an elite founders forum. Maybe the solution could be to make that.

This may caused from all those rushing the beta when they were not ready. They are behind schedule.

You don't HAVE to do anything.

  1. Lifetime Founders will get Crusade when it ships automatically.
  2. People who want to get the beta of it can hang out here and a branch pw will be given out soon.
  3. For those who want to suffer through us getting the bits up on Steam first can join our Discord server in which case I'm manually handing out keys to a few unlucky victims.

Save the Crusade! Save the dream!

I signed up on Discord too but my time is tight so you all skip over me if you want someone who can do more testing and less ohh-ing and ahh-ing.
