GC3 Founders: Crusade Preview

GC3 Founders: Crusade Preview

Greetings GalCiv Founders.

This week, we will be announcing Galactic Civilizations III: Crusade.

Here are the six major bullet points:

#1 Civilization Builder

Players can, from the main menu, design a civilization from scratch.  That includes the default ships they use, what they say in diplomacy and how the AI will make use of them.

Crusade-2 Crusade-30

Completed civilizations can then be uploaded to Steam workshop for others to download.  This differs from the custom race feature in GalCiv III in that this is all-inclusive – ships, techs, flavor text, everything in a single package.

#2 Citizens

This is the most far-reaching change we’ve made to Galactic Civilizations.  The production wheel is gone. Both the the planet and globally.  Instead, you will customize your civilization based on what you do with your citizens.

Crusade-6

Citizens are born on your home world every so often.  What you do with them is up to you.  You can train them as leaders, spies, diplomats, merchants, scientists, engineers, technicians, etc.  It all depends on how you want to run your civilization.

The screenshot above is misleading because it only shows the 3 default specializations (production, research, wealth) but others will be showing up as well as the game progresses (such as shipyard building, etc.).

You can also send citizens to specific worlds to boost their production in a particular area.

#3 Espionage

This works somewhat similarly to GalCiv II.  You can use spies to learn what other civilizations are up to and steal their tech and  you can use them to disable important planetary improvements.  You can also use them to eliminate spies that show up on your planets.

#4 Invasions

No screenshot for this yet, it’s programmer art.  Invasions now require a lot more thought and effort than before and also are interactive.

First, soldiers come from your citizenry.  You can’t just load up population from a given planet and send them over.  Instead, they come from your available citizens.  You can also train citizens to be soldiers which makes them that much more effective.  Of course, once a citizen is killed, it’s gone forever.

When you invade a planet, you get a map of the planet and have to decide where you’re going to land your troops.  If the defender has citizens on that planet (and often, they will not making invasion pretty easy), they will get to place their defenders.  Neither side knows where the other has placed their units until the battle begins.

The invasions are, in effect, a very fun mini game.  Late game, when the stakes get really high, the invasions become pretty nail biting.

#5 Crusade

Crusade is the story that puts it all together.  It introduces a few civilizations and finally gives the player a clear understanding of why the Altarians and Humans are similar. What the Bane is.  Why the Thalan went back in time back to stop the humans and so forth.

#6 New UX

Across the board the user experience is being updated.  The  units look better, the user interface is new, the way things work is cleaner.  Overall, the goal is to make the game more approachable to new players as well as make it much easier to deal with a larger empire.

Crusade-1[6]

I will be writing, at length, a series of dev diaries over the major features for Crusade.  One per week.

Stay tuned.

I'm with jirkaesch - totally understand Stardock don't want to put out a Beta with major issues and am happy to wait until the bigger bugs are deaded.

I'd just like some official word from someone at Stardock to explain the situation today.

Who is bitching, my friend? I guess it is only you :)

Agreed. I see a heck of a lot of excitement, but no real complaining. People were only noting the lack of communication previously (which was fair criticism).

If they don't hit the date its fine, as long as just come back and tell us that.

Well, guess this guesstimate was a false alarm. :( Still looking forward to it!

Yes, would have been nice, especially since the weather is crappy here now and I'd have a nice excuse to sit in front of my computer... but alas it wasn't ready for public consumption.

got some news today.  TAKE WITH grain of salt (or not) because of today's date (I can provide quote though).  I'd expect the password for access to the expansion Tuesday

On the upside its coming out this spring.

Hopefully it's constructive.

Well, that didn't happen  :annoyed:

Should we take the lack of Stardock talkiness as a good sign or bad sign?

I didn't watch the Streams so have no idea about what was said other than a comment I read on here about several CTDs in the first few minutes...

it has been stated before and will be stated again, for all I will reiterate...

The CTD were taken out of context.. even Brad said jokingly  "lucky this wasnt on utube as people will see the crash or read it in the comments and think its the end of the world. But in reality its a 2 second fix in an xml"- paraphrasing.  The crashes were from him having an old custom race file with a previous version of a race ability on that race file. He forgot the version he was showing us there didnt have the fix in it yet. He started a game using the Torian, which had the race trait 'Amphibious' turn from a race ability to a universal ability that every races choices one of four. You can be Carbon based, synthetic based, Amphibious or silicon based. On top of the of 2 race abilities you pick like now. The second crash was from starting a game with the "Random" race on, this crashed because the Random races that were picked, at least one of them was the Torian. The 3rd crash was from converting a General to a privateer, he was using an older version of the beta on the streaming machine which didnt have the upto date code for the privateer so didnt work. The 4th crash was the Twitch stream software crashing, the game itself didnt crash. The last crash on stream was when he made a game with the largest map and forgot (cos it was 3 hours later) that he couldnt add the Torians and so filled the map with all the races to fill it out.

[VOD of the main stream]

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/132042291

List of the VODs from the stream.

https://www.twitch.tv/stardock/videos/all

First vid is 41secs and you dont lose anything from that vid to the second 2h 51m video. It looks like twitch just split to VOD as they changed the stream title.

The last one is 29mins, and that split is from when Twitch crashed as stated above.

So basically if you watch the stream you can see the game is well on track. The only real thing left to do from what I can see is to balance the invasion mechanic. But even that is all implemented and as brad said thats just a few tweaks to xlms, the main code for the invasion tech is there. Now of course not everything is 100% along but if it was done then it would be out and not in development still.. There is another stream on the 4th so check it out if you can.

If you want to talk about invasions Brad asked us to make a post to talk about what we want to see.

Hope that helps.

I'm kind of surprised that we haven't heard a word from them after hearing a tentative release time frame for us founders... Not their usual MO.

Yeah. Again - this is very strange communication policy :annoyed:

It may just be me, but even if the game only had four kind of biologies. There are more according to astrobiology hopefully they include the others for custom factions, and make where you can mod more in ie. germanium.

You mean carbon based and so? Maybe put that into the wishlist thread.

BTW Who said that today is the Day? :)

Yeah, for sure. Maybe add an XML or parameter for how the materials affect gameplay(e.g. gives access to aquatic planets, increases cultural influense with similarly built races{so if majority are carbon based in that map, humans get a bonus say 1% more influence per race, but what if they're silicone based, or copper, or mercury based}, so we can mod them for more according to soneone's pov each time.

Yet another day passes and still no word from Stardock staff.

Makes me really worried, whether we Founders are still considered the first in GC community...

I said it should be today.  HOWEVER, I heard it Saturday which is april fools day hence why my post said to take it with a grain of salt.  Anyway, there's still 9 hrs 2 min left in the day for the US East Coast so it could still occur.

jirkaesch, I still think we're the first people who'd be told.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe Stardock are realising their fancy new Citizen system causes more issues than it solves - or some other major issue has arisen.

Surely, if it was just a minor bug/balance/stability fixing issue, we'd have heard from the inner sanctum by now?

I hope - and largely expect - I'm wrong about any major issues but this quietness is quiet. Too quiet.

Or has Axl Rose taken over at Stardock and he doesn't believe in deadlines?

I think we will get our hands on it as a beta likely at or near the middle of April. I am fine with waiting. The other thread giving opinions on invasions may also have triggered some ideas.

Happy to know its going to be here eventually.

Yeah, I am sure we are. It is actually not the waiting itself, but the lack of communication that sort of disturbs me. It is rather a project management deficiency or community management deficiency.

But hey, who cares if the final DLC is great :)

Hopefully the Axl Rose rumour is not true :D

My life does not revolve around GCIII so I look at it as I will get it when I get it.

That does not change the fact I would not complain if I got it yesterday.

Working.

Very.

Very.

Very.

Long hours.

Short version: We expect to have a Founder's Build to you tomorrow.

I will be posting the password in this forum so that only those who understand it's under NDA will be talking about it.

Feature wise, it's basically done.  But there's so much polish and AI stuff still that makes all the difference in the world.
