(Unofficial) What SCO questions do you hope get answered in the Dec Dev Update?

Do you have any questions about SCO that you'd like to ask the team? If so, post them here.

Maybe if we collect and present the questions, we'll get a better, more detailed update.

Question List as of 12/14/2016:

  • IBNobody:
    • How did the Tywom survive that horrific crash on Titan?
    • Will the January SuperMelee trial have a matchmaking system?
  • The_Think_Tank
    • To what extent can we modify and/or customize our fleet escorts? As in our non-flagship vessels? Will their potentially be upgrades or even individual tones and styles players can choose for said vessels?
    • On average, what do you think the average "planet density" should be per system? Will there be a great diversity of planet density? Or is there a spectrum these systems generally remain in?
    • Besides balancing issues were there any other foreseeable barriers (to adding multiship combat)?
    • With ship combat is there any chance to have a variety of "cover", so that planets, asteroids and such can be hidden behind to enhance the cat and mouse style game-play, or is there no particular emphasis on that play-style?
    • In regards to ship combat, in SC II there were some ships that could launch external vessels, like drones or Marines, is there any interest in implementing similar weapon types? Or will it be for the most part plasma/projectile/laser?
    • Is there any chance the developers could elaborate on the idea of multiple, well, multiverses? And having a single, persistent, world in the multiplayer portion? What exactly are the current plans for online play?

    • How many moons can a planet have? Can something orbit a moon? Will we have space stations?
    • Will alien ships travel beyond their sphere of influence? Will there be such a thing a sphere of influence?

    • Will we be able to "dock" gas planets and stars?
    • Will there be grey aliens?
    • Will there by "above" and "below" space (similar to underground maps in HOMM3 and Shadow realm in Age of wonders)? If so, can they be as big as the normal star-map with stars and planets?
    • Can we get a list of items that one can find/encounter on a planet? Artifacts, ruins, damages ships, outposts, portals, cities?
    • Can a lander fall into a chasm, canyon when roaming a planet?

    • Will there be an animation when you trap a critter, or will they simply disappear and turn into a green resource node?
    • Will there be true, unsolvable Mysteries, like in the original? (Questions like: What happened to the Androsynth? Where did the Orz come from? Where'd the precursors go? Why did the bridge turn purple? What is the Ultimate Evil that the Spathi elude to? Why did Harambe have to die?)
    • Will the main antagonist be purely (boringly) evil? Evil for evil's sake? Or will there be fathomable and unfathomable shades of gray?
    • Could we get some wings or tentacles added to the Scryve? And are they robots? Partial-robots? And what are those orbs for?

    • Due to the multiversal nature of Star Control as of SC:O, is there any possibility of seeing traces of races like the Orz, Arilou, Androsynth, Taalo, and the Melnorme even if they aren't explicitly referred to as such?
    • Did you listen to my Androsynth theme yet?

    • Can you make your own ships (abilities); and if so do you get to script your own abilities/behavior or are you limited to adjusting numbers based on preset ability templates?
    • Can you make custom games within the engine; this covers gaming concepts such as Asteroids, Tower Defense, and DotA-like things?

Let's get the basics out of the way...

 

Official OS Support list, ie Windows 7-10, Mac OS:X 10.10 or Higher, Ubuntu, SteamOS, Etc

Console support if any

System requirements & recommendations - estimated expected ones

What's the general vibe of the team working on the project?

If I stopped by the Michigan branch office, what type of beer should I bring to pass the front desk and get a sneak peak at things?

Have they referenced current NASA star charts to give a good base foundation to our local neighbors?

What's the feeling from Toys for Bob on your current progress.  From Woohoo killer job to hang in there guys we'll help as soon as possible :)

Why did the bridge turn purple?

I want to ask some things. I've been thinking about this a lot.

1) So, the universe is the same, but the VERSION of the universe is an offshoot from our own history, diverging from a different point in time than SCII. But still, humans on earth and that stars have had their names for decades/centuries already in 2016. In SC:O Will our closest star be the Centauri constellation, just like in real life? TFB doesn't own or have any right to the Centauri constellation, it's common knowledge.

2) I really, truly want to know if we will be slorping up random, storyless floating icons as new weapons or ship parts, or if every single upgrade you get will at least have some sort of environment/story (a crashed ship, an ancient ruin, a tomb etc). It'll make me die a little, inside if you can just randomly find floating ship parts for no reason.

3) Will the lander show visible upgrades?

4) If you're fighting a group of ships, say 3, when one is destroyed, would it be possible to include the annihilated husk in the two remaining battles, as another object to avoid?

5) Will there be an animation when you trap a critter, or will they simply disappear and turn into a green resource node?

I'm gonna add more, but that's later.

And like Maanvis touched on - why did the bridge turn purple? I don't want to KNOW. I want to spend the next 5 years of my life (or 25) speculating.

I had the same problem, I had the 'lawnmower man' avatar for a while while I already updated it to this 'moon thing' in my profile.

Will there be a base building mechanic?

 

IE

Gather enough materials & as time/events go on you'll see it automatically grow

or

A bit more involved method would be you having a hand in determining the direction of growth of your base(s)

Dude I want to see my Starbase evolve & visually see my ship yard improve :P

 

It's not like I asked if down the road there'd be a living universe map where certain players would have custom races and their own spheres of influences that update with a central server, or are updated in a decentralized manner such as bitcoin wallets

There was already some. The Tywom have Spathi and UrQuan models hanging in their ship. Those apparently survived the crash landing on Titan too. /S

Oh thank God. It vaguely sounded like you were referring to the base/colony building mechanic from Star Control THREE! How you would build bases across the galaxy, and they would "automatically grow" resources and fuel for you. Crisis averted.

I'm on board with your idea - not so much a base-BUILDING mechanic, but your SINGLE base, expanding/improving.

Star control three?  I do not know what you talk of there... oh wait the Space cow puppet show, yup now it's coming back to me, oh crap I think I'm gonna harf.  - Don't get me wrong, it had some nice fun humor in it, but it was by no means a "Star Control" game.

 

I'll say colonies could be interesting if done right, but honestly I have no desire to have to micromanage a number of colonies, star bases, etc.  -- I'd buy Civilizations: VI if I wanted to micromanage that much stuff.

 

Something I had asked elsewhere or maybe suggested - I'll have to look it up when I get home tonight.

Will we be able to research weapons/components for our ships?  Be it tossing resources at it, or having to find rare drops & research those before deciding if it's worth anything.
