Time to Name your Planet

Time to Name your Planet

Greetings, Lifetime Founder!

Thank you for your support of Star Control. The time for you to make your mark on the universe has arrived - that's right, it's time to name a planet!

In order to submit, you must be logged in with the Stardock account that you purchased the Founder's Lifetime Edition with.

While we encourage silly and wild names (this is Star Control, after all), we ask that you please use your best judgment when submitting. We will deny any submissions containing offensive or inappropriate content, as well as submissions containing copyrighted or trademarked material.

Submissions end on October 14, 2016. Please see the "Name a Planet" page for all official rules and details. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

1. Only ONE entry per user. You may change your entry once it has been submitted, but it will need to be re-approved.

2. Any inappropriate, trademarked, or copyrighted content will result in the entire entry being rejected.

3. If your entry is rejected, you may re-submit your entry. However, Stardock reserves the right to lock out any user who abuses this system or who submits deliberately offensive content.

4. Planet names are limited to 16 letters/numbers/spaces (no punctuation, please), and will be converted to title case in-game (only first letter capitalized).

5. Numbers and punctuation are acceptable in first, last, or screen names.

16 letters... Hmm...

How about...

"WE WANT LOCAL MP"

Or...

"TOP DOWN IS BEST" / "TOP DOWN 4EVER"

Or...

"SOULLESS HUSK PG"

Anyway... What are your planet names going to be?

Hunam, I think if you keep the planet name away from things like n00bsRweird or BodaciousTaTas and more along the lines of current stellar nomenclature (Eta Volantis or Alpha Orionis), you'll probably be fine.

Maybe you should pass the names by us on here, and we'll *help* ;)

Isn't this kind of offer for help the same kind that is extended after someone says: "Poker? Sounds fun, teach me how to play?" :-p

Well, it was already offered, but my first choice would be Bickdutt.  *_*

You should name the planet what you would name it regardless of convention. I can promise you that we are doing more than just a couple of systems with all the player planets. Hence one of the reasons we are asking for the names at this point in development. :)

"ZOQ LIVES MATTER" it is, then.

@Vaelzad

that's all you had to say and the experience would be so much smoother if it happened earlier. ;)

Where do I go to send a planet name in if I apparently deleted the e-mail not realizing what it was?  :-)

^ Click on the big logo above and read letters on the screen. ;)

All I get is a Login screen, then when I login it is just a Logout button.  Nothing else comes up.

EDIT: I figured it out, just had to go back again.

There was nowhere to leave a comment.  If devs want to know the origin of the name I submitted just ask me in a personal message if you are wanting to keep the names secret for now.  That name has appeared in several places before and is a ref to a lot of different things.  I'm used to bringing things like this to the attention of a designer, a legacy of that "nefarious activity" that was cracked down on way back in the early days when it began to get out of control, haha.  SVC assigned "pop culture reference watchdogs" to keep those kinds of things from happening again.

It was a great tradition while it lasted, though, haha!

You have to be a Star Control Lifetime Founder. :P

j/k.

Try a different browser?

"Tom was here" got approved... FML.

They approved mine, too.  I went with the comedy choice to match the Star Control theme:-)

You know that big planet destroying monster in TOS that Commodore Decker flies into to destroy it?  I used the name of the planet that monster had just eaten right before that happened in the SFU that became kind of the comedy planet of the SFU over the years with, I think, almost none of all that comedy stuff ever actually being published anywhere, haha.  But we had got the name from somewhere else, so Star Control will be like the 5th game to have this planet name in it.  It has been used several times as "the comedy" planet already in very old board games.

Tom named a planet. This is proof that this game has multiplayer. (NMS sarcasm)

QUESTION!

does " - " counts as a punctuation? ;O

i wanted to name something like "LV-426" but i don't want to send it without being sure

^ Just submit it and if rejected, submit something else.

Is it too late to resubmit my name as "ASDKLJFLASDJFA"?

^ that sounds sexy in Chmmr.

I think i know why they're asking planet names now...

They are tailoring them into main campaign POIs... They might not even be planets, but star systems names. Brad lied?.. *_*

If 08matias11tuomas is visible on the starmap, FML. :P

Oh, you guys are such conspiracy theorists! If #bradwardelllied starts trending on Twitter, we'll all know who was behind it.

At least you two have finally found common ground and are getting along after months of butting heads, so I guess there's a silver lining...

I think the devs are doing an incredible job, and y'all are pouting that they're not answering your questions quickly enough. They're not on your schedule, bub! Let em do their work and do it well and we'll unwrap an incredible present this Christmas!!

I would never ever do that. Brad has made mistakes, but he owned them.

And as for getting along... Well... I'm a frenemy with everybody. But you'll see that I am more useful than the average argumentative troll once we start getting code to try out. I am a master of finding bugs/exploits. Better at that than I am at playing, tbh.

Every update i get more exited for this project!

Come on, guys. Be more active. We don't bite much. Except maybe me. And Kavik. But mostly me.

I'm basically a lurker on these forums - I log in every few weeks at best. Judging by the number of planets named vs. the number of regular forum posters, I think plenty of other founders are in the same boat. I expect that more founders will become active participants here, however, when there's actually a game to play and give feedback on. Until then, for me at least, there really isn't anything to discuss.

My request to the developers is thus. I know we get to name planets. But past that?... Let's say the name I chose is Volcana, which is (obviously) supposed to be a name for a volcanic world (at least in my mind). Then the game comes out. I go and find my planet, and it turns out that it was algorithmically assigned to an ice world.

Is there any way that as well as naming planets, we get a few options as well? Like "check box of desired planet type here" or "click here if you want there to be life forms on your planet"? That would be very cool, as well as providing a method to add context to planet names like Voltron (wather hazard world) or Radon (radioactive hazards).

I realize that due to developmental issues, this may not be possible. But even if the planet types and such were only taken as suggestions, it would make the whole process a lot more engaging and satisfying for founders both before, and after the game's development.

( P.S. my current planet name idea is Zealos pronounced za-ea-lows any suggestions as to how I should spell that phonetically is welcome)

While this is true, don't forget that they have limited steam keys to give away (unless Valve budges on their end) for the first wave, and being active elevates your chances of getting one to give yourself context.

I chose one for the love of me. B)
