Time to Name your Planet

Time to Name your Planet

Greetings, Lifetime Founder!

Thank you for your support of Star Control. The time for you to make your mark on the universe has arrived - that's right, it's time to name a planet!

In order to submit, you must be logged in with the Stardock account that you purchased the Founder's Lifetime Edition with.

While we encourage silly and wild names (this is Star Control, after all), we ask that you please use your best judgment when submitting. We will deny any submissions containing offensive or inappropriate content, as well as submissions containing copyrighted or trademarked material.

Submissions end on October 14, 2016. Please see the "Name a Planet" page for all official rules and details. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

1. Only ONE entry per user. You may change your entry once it has been submitted, but it will need to be re-approved.

2. Any inappropriate, trademarked, or copyrighted content will result in the entire entry being rejected.

3. If your entry is rejected, you may re-submit your entry. However, Stardock reserves the right to lock out any user who abuses this system or who submits deliberately offensive content.

4. Planet names are limited to 16 letters/numbers/spaces (no punctuation, please), and will be converted to title case in-game (only first letter capitalized).

5. Numbers and punctuation are acceptable in first, last, or screen names.

16 letters... Hmm...

How about...

"WE WANT LOCAL MP"

Or...

"TOP DOWN IS BEST" / "TOP DOWN 4EVER"

Or...

"SOULLESS HUSK PG"

Anyway... What are your planet names going to be?

Absolutely that is why you guys are here. However if you see a development build with a planet full of mushrooms labeled Venus, it is safe to assume the obvious common sense is that isn't what we are planning on having Venus look like.

That being said there will be a time when we show more final screens of the game that we will come out and say are looking pretty close to final. When that time comes I'm more than happy when things we may have missed get caught or questioned as final.

Haha, I think the folks here commenting on Venus were more entertaining ideas about erotic fan-fiction, than actually criticizing :P

More comments from you, Vaelzad, we love hearing from you!

Vaelzad,

You came back to tell us that what we see is a WiP when people were joking about mushrooms... Why can't you reply to my local multiplayer thread and give us the scoop on the presence or absence of THAT feature?

Can somebody delete Venus posts and let Andrew answer relevant questions?  >:(  XD

^ This! Planet Naming is relevant too!

Name accepted. Huzzah!!

I currently count 111 accepted names. :)

I just received an email stating that my planet name was approved. So there is some communication. I believe that they are head down in development mode.

I thought it was pretty clear that was a joke.  Guess not.  I'll just shut up if we are going to focus on a one line throw away joke and ignore the rest of the feedback provided by myself and the other poster.

I noticed that as well. Come on, guys. Be more active. We don't bite much. Except maybe me. And Kavik. But mostly me.

Also, take a wild guess which one is my planet :P

I wonder who submitted "Ando Gyeongsang". That is the name of a region in Korea. Surprised to see a Korean as a founder. I didn't think this game was known in Korea during the glory days of Star Control.

They aren't answering us at all. Look at my open question thread on local multiplayer as proof. We may be founders, but I feel more like a mushroom right now.

While I do read every post that is made (including Kavik's) we are only going to respond when we have something we want to share with everyone. Questions about Local MP and naming convention haven't gone unnoticed, but that doesn't mean we are going to answer every question that is put forth.

Right now I think it is safe to table any answer or questions with regards to local MP. You haven't played the MP of Star Control: Origins at all which puts you at a disadvantage of being able to talk about it constructively because you have no context, and we aren't quite ready to show it to you to begin that conversation.

I would think this was an attempt for us to be able to make our mark on the game.  There are names that were approved that I'm sorry to say, are not so great.  But hey, that was their choice to not take this seriously.  It would have been nice if they would have allowed us to use ' in our names, to give it that somewhat phonetic roll.  Regardless, when I sit down to play this game when it is fully released, sometime 2017, it will be exciting and warrant a smile when I come across my planet name.

So, the stellar naming convention isn't finalized and we are asked to submit our names. Why?

This is kinda a big deal to me.

Because they don't want to tell you that they are sticking all the named planets in a few solar systems to keep the immersion levels from breaking too much.

It's like being able to name a mystery plot of land. If they told you the truth that it was right outside Chernobyl, would you be happy?

^ Wouldn't that break immersion even more if you stumble upon a system(s) with all the founder's names?.. Who'd even like that?

I'd rather have 1 founder's name per system, so it's extremely rare to encounter. Keep those names out of the systems involved with main quest line too.

But that wasn't my question. I'd like my name to "blend" in with the rest of the planet names particularly for immersion reasons.

I also wonder, why punctuation is out of planet syntax. Is it engine limitation or design choice? So, will I be able to have my robot planets named z7-69 through mod tools?

Could it be a wormhole in quasi-space that takes you to the Founder's space sector inaccessible by any other way?.. A "dungeon map" so to speak...

I can live with something that that if it makes sense in its context (which I couldn't possibly imagine at this point). In this case my question is irrelevant.

I've seen this done both ways, and I've seen it done both ways in the same game.

Pillars of Eternity had awful player-made NPCs sprinkled around towns that you could soul gaze at and get a player-written backstory. (One had a rape scene, IIRC.) It broke immersion badly, and by the end of the game, I made it a point to try to kill them all with console commands when I saw them.

PoE also had out-of-the-way graveyards with player-made epitaphs. You had a bunch of epitaphs on the same gravestone. That was okay as these weren't in-your-face, but it felt that it was a letdown for people who thought they'd have a unique gravesite on the map.

So... Lose Lose... Ideally, we'd get well written player-named planets sprinkled around. But with how lax Stardock is being, I would want all the "08matias11tuomas" immersion breaking worlds somewhere out in a stellar junkheap that I could ignore.

Hunam, I think if you keep the planet name away from things like n00bsRweird or BodaciousTaTas and more along the lines of current stellar nomenclature (Eta Volantis or Alpha Orionis), you'll probably be fine.

Maybe you should pass the names by us on here, and we'll *help* ;)
