The Strategic Zoom debate

As I said in the video, I don't have any problem with people modding it for private use. But we won't support it nor will people be able to play MP with it.
This made my day
K thanks.
Not a single unit in the game has the range to warrant zooming out as far as the camera was doing in the video.
I don't understand why people want MEGA ZOOM from this game when there are plenty of other games that do it.
It's not about the range of any given unit, it's the scale of many of the maps. It's one thing on tiny 2 player maps; the zoom is fine there. But trying to figure out the ideal routes and positioning for your armies on large maps like Scorpio is very frustrating and cumbersome.
So disappointing. Guess we'll have to wait till it gets modded to really enjoy your game.
Look, SupCom is a game about economy. Its getting a larger number of icons and making your opponents wink out.
AOTS is a game about combat. About unit placement and clever moves. Push and counter push.
You can't even play this game like SupCom.
Besides, most SupCom players just play Seton's Clutch, build a few defences around a choke point then rush nukes.
Why do I want more zoom? At what times do I feel zoom has limited my ability to play the game strategically and/or tactically?
When I'm trying to get a better understanding of the relative proximity of neighboring resource points and the terrain between where my forces are and those points reside. I'm trying to figure out what path my troops should take, where I should put smartys, etc. There are time zooming out barely lets me see the next resource point. There are times I want to see two resource points away and the intervening terrain for strategic and tactical reasons.
Without those things I try to compare the strategic map to what I'm seeing on screen. The strategic map isn't strategic, in my mind, because all it shows is a map of resource points and their types. It has no clues as to terrain.
That's what I'm missing in either the limited zoom or as features in the strategic map.
I hope this makes sense. And, while I know I'm not a years-long, chronic RTS player (or much good at them, for that matter), I don't believe I can possibly be alone in missing the information a larger zoom field would bring.
I've made this point quite a few times in the past, but the current zoom doesnt work too well imho. I will be using a comparison to supreme commander too, that zoom allows quick movement around the map to where many individual battles may be raging, Thats where Ashes falls down, managing different battles on the map is tricky. The strategic zoom is to clumsy and I think thats the point a few posters have tried to indicate.
Looking at the devs youtube video, why not make that an option for the player to choose, the level of zoom, I love the way you zoom in and out and it adds to the strategy of the game! Please let us have this as an option to choose, not just for modding, but in the game! If all player partys choose enhanced zoom, then the game is balanced!
I'm love to see the units on the map in detail too, not necessary icons, but for that brief strategic overview, the method employed in supreme commander wins hands sown every time. Icons ftw then!
On a related note, Deserts of kharak has a similar zoom setup to Ashes and I get a little frustrated at that too. You just cant see whats happening on a "pictorial" strategic view, the terrain is important.
Can the extra zoom be unlocked now?
It is not possible to play a strategic battle if you are only able to see a small number of units and no overall terrain. I get the devs do not like the icons but they also say that want large, strategic battles. Not going to happen with you zoomed into a tiny part of a huge map. The larger the map, the bigger the issue (taking you a long time to scroll to points on the map or to see how to map-control).
+1 to Kazz too.

I prefer a lot this kind Zoom then what we have in escalation, wy not work in future in something like this , there are too mush inf in zoom out its not need keep it simple.
We cant close the battles to the players, they have to keep see all not close the view to give them information about all that is happend on the game.
its not bad at all, i just think the icons are too big and sometimes they overlap.
