Exclusive Launch Weekend Ship Parts Coming

Exclusive Launch Weekend Ship Parts Coming

As a bonus to all of our Founders, Early Access players, and early launch weekend adopters, we’re giving away a free pack of unique ship parts to use in customizing your starships.

The Launch Weekend Ship Parts DLC is not and never will be for sale, and will be automatically added to your Steam account when it becomes available on launch day, May 14.

Everyone who has already bought Galactic Civilizations III, or who purchases through May 17, will receive the ship parts as a token of Stardock’s appreciation.

Thanks for your support, and happy conquering!

Not much of a ship designer myself, but I'm a huge fan of being a completest so knowing I will have these is very exciting! Thanks for the token of appreciation.

Sweet! Thanks!

I wonder how these will render when we eventually multi play with non founders?

Will the parts include logos that can be placed on the ships? I have missed that from GCII.

I am looking forward to getting these parts, but I can't say I'm comfortable with the idea that they will never be available to others.  I think that it being a 'timed' exclusive would be more community friendly.  Hopefully in the future non-early adopters will get the chance to purchase this if they want to.

Launch day DLC that isn't available to others is fairly common, they will just be a few cosmetic parts anyway doubt anyone who doesn't have them will miss them. Doesn't matter to me though if they chose to sell them later that would be fine with me too.

It is a timed exclusive. Players who purchased prior to May 17th will get it. Thats more then most games allow which is usually limited to just preorders.

I'm a huge fan of Stardock and their games, especially Gal Civ (which is why I became a founder. Gal Civ 2 is probably the best value game I ever bought re: cost vs gameplay hours.)

That said, I have to say I'm really not happy about this. Giving those that backed the game early some extra options is nice. Making it so if you didn't preorder or buy the game within the first week you can never get these parts isn't. One of Gal Civ's strengths is the ability to create your own content with just the game itself and no modding experience. From creating your own factions and ships, to recreating your favourite Sci-Fi settings, there's a lot you can do right out of the box. But now you're locking away some of those options and saying to a new player even a month down the line "sorry, you should have been here earlier." It's like buying a LEGO set only to discover it doesn't have all the pieces.

And what happens when someone with the exclusive parts makes a custom faction ship design using them, and tries to share their creations with other players who didn't buy it early? Will it break the mod, or will we have to see this mod requires you to have bought the game early? That is not going to go down well with a lot of people.

I know as a Founder I will get these exclusive parts and I'm sure I will enjoy using them. But I also know what it's like to come to a game late and miss out. It leaves the new player disappointed and may negatively effect their opinion of the game itself.

So I would respectfully request that Stardock changes their mind about never releasing these parts to the rest of the players. Something like including them in the first expansion pack like NorsemanViking suggested in Reply #23 would be ideal.

All the Best,

Earth Force Captain.

I disagree, giving some little thing as a thank you to founders just shows thanks to the people that backed the game early.

That's not what I mean.  By timed exclusive I mean that its exclusivity is timed, which is how I've seen that term used in general in gaming.  That's not the case here where they have said the exclusivity of this DLC is infinite, which is the part I, and a few others here, have a problem with.

Given how things are stored in-game, I presume anyone who makes a mod with these parts, their mod will be useable by anyone, with or without the DLC. Custom art is custom art, no matter what the source.  The idea that these would "break" for people without the DLC doesn't make much sense to me.

This is just good PR, good job guys.

I have to say so long as I get the lovely shiny extra parts I don’t give the tiniest Tamarin who else Stardock choose or don’t choose to give or sell them too. Thanks guys.

Have the custom parts been released yet? I can't see them in my DLC tab (restarted multiple times). Just checking to make sure all is right on my end (don't want to sound impatient). Thanks for the replies!

Not sure if they'll show up as a "DLC". I want to say they'll be packaged in the release and the removed or blocked from use in code. Since in multiplayer those who have them can use them, and those who don't can see them but not use them in their creator. I could be wrong though.

It's in the DLC section of your Gal Civ 3 page on the Steam App. :)

It's implemented now. Restart Steam if you don't see it in the DLC list.

Though where to find them is another question.

There are 7 new parts in the Terran style in the small section labelled 'Founder_model_##'.  That looks to be the extent of the DLC.

Correct. There are some DLC xml files in the game directory.

All parts are:
Terran
Cosmetic
Small
Bulkhead

I must admit I was expecting more than that.  Oh well, better than nothing I suppose.

Hopefully in the future if they do more ship part DLC, particularly if it's paid DLC, that they are a bit more substantial than this.

Ahh, there we go :) . Good to know.  It is easier to implement that way too I'm sure. You know it has to be buried in everyone's files somehow there for multiplayer. Maybe it's stored in a temp file in those cases?

Mine looked like that but said "Not installed".  I had to uncheck it and then recheck it before it actually installed.
