Voting Open For $1,000 Faction Design Contest

Voting is now open in the $1,000 Galactic Civilizations III Faction Design Contest! Head to https://www.galciv3.com/factiondesigncontest to vote for who you think deserves the $1,000 grand prize and inclusion in the final game.

Our thanks to the many people who submitted their custom-designed factions for consideration. We had a great time checking out all your wonderful creations, but ultimately we had to pick just eight finalists (and four honorable mentions).

As a bonus, you can also download the finalists and honorable mentions and add them to your own game, right from the voting page.

Best of luck to our finalists, thanks to everyone who entered, and happy conquering to you all!

Good luck to everyone!

I don't see the honorable mentions at that link?

Great work people, best of luck :)

just one question, how do we view the 4 honorable mentions?

Hey, just curious about the honorable mentions as well.  Are they in addition to the eight finalists?

Thanks,

Joe

Hey, thanks for picking me as one of the finalists!

Never thought that anyone would be interested in a species of sentient crystals :D

Glad I didn't submit any of my other more conventional species.

I've been testing each of the factions, and I'm enjoying the creative approaches the finalists took.

I got to the Favixi and for some reason I can't play them--the game CTDs every time I start to build a map :S

I would like to check them out before voting because they seem very interesting--is anyone else having any trouble with this mod?

Awesome! I'm a bit shocked I made it in as a finalist but certainly not disappointed XD

If anyone is curious as to the Orphica Enclave's traits/abilities and doesn't want to download it, here's a pic:

I liked your idea a lot, I thought it was pretty original. Reminded me of those big blue crystals from that Stargate: SG1 episode if you're familiar with it.

Don't see any link to honorable mentions anymore when I checked...

I'm also having trouble with the Kuja (at first I thought it was the ship designs, but I'm pretty sure I have them set up right)... all the other factions are working, so I'm not sure what I did wrong.

Dumb question, but when you download the factions, how do you install them?  And can I install all of them?

Kuja Faction

Thanks for including me....

But the submissions were done before Beta 6 and the game version 0.9 made a small edit to the way ships were called... making my mod not work.

So for those of you who want to try my faction:

Because of how the mod system checks for custom ship designs, to get the mod to work, you'll need to copy the designs into the program folder location for designs.

For no custom Ships:

The other submissions look great, too. :)  Win or lose, it was fun making this (and I'm still developing it).  And once Steam Workshop is integrated, I'll have an updated version of this on there.

Edit: Stardockers, any chance we can replace the downloadable file for the submissions with updated ones which work properly?

Also curious as to the correct install procedure, as I had to make Angry Joe by hand.   Doesn't look obvious on inspecting the factions directory of my games/galciv3.

I have managed to just drop some of them into the my game/galciv3/mods directory (unzipped).   But others don't work.

I haven't looked at all the submissions but several have a mod folder in them. The directory structure doesn't look consistent in the zips.

But, you find that zip that has subfolders (Game, gfx, text, etc) in them.  And unzip that and place into your Mods folder.  Does that make sense?

Yes, but others have a different structure and clearly I am not doing those correctly.

I can get Angry Joe (from forum), The asterit, the cladjinn, the orphica, the spefields to work.  But not the others.   First to check if I copied them right.

Can you point to a specific one?  I'll try to give instructions based on that.  (I noticed that the downloadable file for my submission has a different structure the other ones.  I don't know why they didn't just make it all uniform.... maybe it is because they had to convert some from those who submitted a game-created faction, as opposed to an xml created one).

As an example, I looked at the Favixi by pendrokar.

In the zip there is a Favixi folder, then two zips inside. The one numbered 0000130 seems to be the "newer" of the two.  Inside that zip are the folders that are relevant.

I created a folder in my mod folder called Favixi.  Then I moved the folders inside 00000130.zip into the Favixi folder.  And that should do it.  When I start the game and select new game, the cute purple hamster is an option.  (Unfortunately, for whatever reason, maybe something incompatible with Beta 6, if you chose the race and start a game, it crashes).

i downloaded the kujo as recommended but it crashes on startup.  Let me check the others again.

The ones that have four entries, 2 text and 2 files, I don't seem to get to work.

Thanks Dumhed--got the Kujo working with your update. Cool stuff!

Still having trouble with the Favixi...

For mine, if you download the one from the faction voting page, that one will crash if you try to start a game with that faction.  The one I posted above should work.  In this version, though, the ship designs need to be moved to the proper place.  So, once you download the file, you need to copy or move all the ship design files in the "Design" folder and stick it in the "Designs" folder at Program Files(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Galactic Civilizations III/Designs.

After reading your readme I got the Kujo to work.   Wow.  Reading is Power!   Thanks.

Perhaps that is how I should approach the others.....you think?

EDIT:  when I download the other three: faxvi, judgement..., and mirrion..., I get a faction file and the pictures for the submission, not the portraits etc, that go into the factions file.

So those I can't handle.   Can someone give me a slap upside my head, what am I missing?

K, checked the other Downloads,

  • Cladjinn Resistence: it is a bad link. Can't download.
  • Favixi: in the zip, and in the 00000130.zip move the contents into a folder called "Favixi" in your Mods Folder. (you have to make the folder).  This one crashes for me.
  • Kuja: download the one I posted above instead.  The one from the voting page crashes because of changes in Beta 6.
  • Spefields Socieity: in the zip and inside the 00000101.zip, move the "Spefields" folder into your Mods folder. It works and runs for me.
  • Asterit Crystals: inside the zip, and inside the 00000116.zip there is a folder called "Asterit".  Move that folder into your Mod folder and your good to go.  It works and runs fine for me.
  • Mirrrion Symphony: in the zip and in the 00000061.zip, move the Factionfile into your My Games/GalCiv3/Factions folder. Works for me.
  • Orphica Enclave: in the zip, move the OrphicaFactionMod folder (with its contents) into your Mods folder. Works for me.
  • Judgement of Karn: In the zip, and in the 00000118.zip folder, move the faction file into your factions folder. Works for me.

So I can use mirrion and judgement  with only the faction file itself is what you are saying.   I will try that.   I have the other working now except faxvi, like you.  Thanks for your help.

yeah, It looks like perhaps the image is saved into the faction file... that is my guess.

Been trying some things with the Faixivi data but haven't gotten it to work.  Perhaps someone has had success with this?

OH by the way you must be right; the other two factions work fine so far.
