Voting Open For $1,000 Faction Design Contest

Voting is now open in the $1,000 Galactic Civilizations III Faction Design Contest! Head to https://www.galciv3.com/factiondesigncontest to vote for who you think deserves the $1,000 grand prize and inclusion in the final game.

Our thanks to the many people who submitted their custom-designed factions for consideration. We had a great time checking out all your wonderful creations, but ultimately we had to pick just eight finalists (and four honorable mentions).

As a bonus, you can also download the finalists and honorable mentions and add them to your own game, right from the voting page.

Best of luck to our finalists, thanks to everyone who entered, and happy conquering to you all!

(in post above, added a version of my faction without ships for those who don't want to bother with it).  Ideally, someone at stardock would be willing to zip those two files up and post them as the downloadable file on the voting page.  I'm afraid no one will get a chance to try my mod. :(

Bad news...with the 0,95 patch evidently the kujo again doesn't work (ctd on startup).   All the other factions, and my "old" custom factions seem ok though.

*sigh*

Part of the problem is I have fully edited mod... not just the faction.  It has added techs, improvements, ships, starship modules, etc.  All it takes is for one system to change or no longer match.  I'll look into it.  I dunno if voters are downloading before voting.  But if so... I'm DOOMED!!!! :p

My sympathy, looks like a great mod.   But I barely had a chance with it.

It works fine for me.  Just in case something happened to the design folder I just recopied all the designs and stuck them in and replaced the old files.

Your Mod is working for me also with version 0.95 of GC III.

Looks great!. Haven't tried the "WithShips" version yet. Have already learnt some things I have done wrong with my attempts.

Best of luck with the comp.

Doesn't look like it; that's unfortunate.

Well that sucks I should have downloaded them when I had the chance. I know it was possible before I went to work today I hope they fix that soon.

I created the Judgement of Karn using only the ingame Faction Creator, so all the graphics, the faction leader image etc are already in the game. That's why you aren't seeing them in the zip file. (I think this is also the case for the Mirrrion Symphony, judging by the zip file having the same structure as my one.)

Thanks Dumhead for the instructions on how to use the different factions and generally being helpful.

All the Best,

Earth Force Captain

Hi! I made the Mirron Symphony. You don't need anything just the design files, as the portrait and ship design are all in-game ones.

Also, for some reason the voting page doesn't include the strengths and weaknesses. When I created them, that was put in the top left part of the launch screen instead of it's place, so if you download it look for that in the top left corner :).

Good luck to all the other contestants, there are some awesome submissions here!

I had that happen with strengths and weaknesses too during testing. It seems to happen if the faction description + strengths and weaknesses was too long to fit in the UI box that appears at the start. I had to edit the two down a little so they'd both fit.

<-- I'm the creator of Favixi. Nice that I have made it to the finals, though I did not expect to have it playable by human players, since the winner will have it as a minor race, which have always been unplayable for human players. Favixi has their own AI, since the default AI would not be adequate.

Favixi: in the zip, and in the 00000130.zip move the contents into a folder called "Favixi" in your Mods Folder. (you have to make the folder).

Ah of course, should have done that even before sending it to Stardock. I hope Stardock tested all finalist factions.

I got to the Favixi and for some reason I can't play them--the game CTDs every time I start to build a map :S

I tested on Beta 6 v0.95 opt in and got the following in debug.err before it throws crash information:
"Debug Message:  Building tech tree for node: FavixiEngineeringTech"

For Favixi I have removed techs that allow creating larger than "small" type of ships. Beta 6 probably has had changes in the tech tree that and make it crash. I kinda expected this, but Stardock ended submissions right around the time before Beta 6 came out.  >:(

I can probably fix that, but I feel making any changes would feel as an update.

[Edit] Yeah, it is the unique Tech Tree that makes it crash. Just changing Favixi_Tree To Generic_Tree in FactionDefs makes it work. But Favixi building swarm of small ships is their important aspect. Fixing... [Edit2] Alternatively I could just give them a ship style that doesn't have those hulls... [Edit3] Wow it works, except I have to use the "Custom" name for ShipStyle as XSD has specific set of names that can be used.

@Stardock could you tell us how the debugging variables in preferences work? They are by default set to "Default" in prefs.ini, what are other options?

[Edit4]

Hmm wonder what happened when I uploaded 0.95.   Anyway I tried the without ships verison and it works fine just dropping it in the mod directory.  If I get ambitious I will go back and try the ship version, probably something just glitched when I was updating the client.   I do remember restarting 3-4 times before the new opt in patch seemed to settle down and work, maybe that had something to do with  it!

Anyway thanks again!

Methane based life form :) oh wait mine didn't make it lol, that's why I want to see the honorable mentions, to see who made them even though they didn't make the cut :)  Downloading these races would be nice too ;) something tells me they were pulled as they weren't working as intended....

Favixi Fixed for Beta 6, v0.95 and now are in their own folder.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/1u7yq464pjbmx6m/Favixi_NoTechTree.zip

It nolonger uses a unique tech tree, that tech tree didn't even use the Base Tech Tree. Don't mistake Base Tech Tree with Generic. Base allows to build base components and starbase modules. Previously I replaced that to remove colony module for Favixi and have the Construction module more costly.

Currently GalCiv 3 doesn't use the leader description, I still added it though:

Purcyanple quickly rose through the ranks not only due to his very unique fur appearance. Which allowed him to stand out and lose the number style title common to most Favixi. But also claiming to be a reincarnation of a few previous leaders. Though some claim that evidence for this was forged.

Looking forward to testing other factions once we heard what Stardock want to do with downloads.

" something tells me they were pulled as they weren't working as intended...."
I think it is also an issue with putting the factions manually.

When I dumped this download into my Mods file, the race showed up very nicely and the game started ok.  However, they did not have any ships near their captial...no survey, no no search, no colony.   Did I screw up (usually the case!).

It doesn't? Well in that case here's The Judgement of Karn's leader, Justicar Zatan.

Zatan lost his entire gene-line on the Night of Fire. Now he thinks of nothing but carrying out his people's judgement.

I kept it short to fit into the in game UI without scrolling. When I say gene-line I mean he didn't just lose his immediate family, he lost every single relative going back to a common ancestor many generations ago. It takes a lot to change an entire races nature, so I was trying to show just how catastrophic the Night of Fire was and the real cost of it for every surviving Karnite. Where as a Drengin might hate you because they're just plain evil, a Karnite hates you because as far as they are concerned, you killed everyone they ever cared about.

Not really. As I previously mentioned, since the winner of the contest gets to have his race as a minor race, then I set it up as a minor race, while really setting it as a major race for testing purposes. With the unique tech tree removed, you are still able to make colony ships by adding the component to a custom ship. The AI won't do that, which was the reason I removed the ship.

Favixi would be very unbalanced as a major race. Heavily outperforming other races using their high colony population growth. Having a 100% boost to ship production, which was set so that they would be able to quickly build small ships. Sadly it also affects non-military ships.
