BIG REMINDER: GalCiv III requires 64-bit

The original Galactic Civilizations for OS/2 was somewhat notable in that it was the first commercial 32-bit game.

While there are some games that offer 64-bit editions, most of them also include a 32-bit version.  In the case of GalCiv III, it is natively 64-bit. That means no 32-bit version.  You must have a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 (most people these days do but not everyone).

So before you join up, make sure you actually are running a 64-bit version of Windows.

Did you guys ever figure out how to filter the depots on Steam for 64-bit only?

We can filter the depots, but Steam will happily let you buy GC3 even though you don't own a 64-bit computer. We would prefer to avoid disappointing those sure-to-be-unhappy customers.

Quick way to check whether your flavor of Windows is 64-bit:

Go to "start"

On older versions of Windows, click "Run..." ... or on newer flavors, such as Windows 7, you can just type in the search box

Type "dxdiag" (without the quotes)

Under "System Information," the third line will tell you what version of Windows you have, and should say "64-bit" if your version of Windows is 64-bit.

Or in windows 7 and the likes, just click on start, right click computer, click properties and it'll tell you there under "System".

I've got 64 bit, but the big question in my mind is -  will a PC with an i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM and a low end AMD graphics card be able to run GC3?

The only real hard requirements as far as I understand

1) 64-bit oS

2) DX10 card

If your video card supports DX10 then yes, I think.

I believe that good CPU is more important for GC3 (AI, a lot of objects, etc.).

Very excited about the 64-bit limitation. No longer will we be bottlenecked by 32-bit software- BRING ON THE ULTRA-MASSIVE GALAXIES!

Do we submit this data or are you gathering it through steam stuff...

Those! Those are the minimum graphics cards! And quad core!?!? I have a quad and think the other stuff but that sounds really steep. I might be wrong.

I have a 5000 series AMD card.  It's several years old at this point.

I very well remember the days I had to buy a new PC for UT GOTY. I fitted it with an NVidia Geforce 2 back then. My first proper gfx card.

When I got my laptop I didn't look into graphics card but... Let me check mine now... Is a Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 with 1792MB of graphical memory a good setup? I have 0 dedicated memory, whatever that is.

A Nvidia GeForce 210 is out of the question? I was told it was the equivalent of my suddely-dead GeForce 8600 but I get totally lost with the naming conventions of the cards. :\

We'll be relying on your posts to tell us if it works or not to some extent. Right now what we've put up is the best we've determined on our own so far.

Its a shame I just sold My old First Generation Core 2 quad. Would be curious to see how well it ran on it.

Ok, I'll let you know.

I have seen a "cloth" map in the pics of the Escapists's article so maybe in the worst case scenario, that is still an option.

I figured this would be the case, but AFAIK this is the first time you have mention Vista anywhere and caused me to hold back on buying the cheaper founder packs. Even now on Steam it only says 7 and 8 and Yarlen just excluded Vista in the minimum requirements they listed. It's very confusing.

Well that's a bummer. I'm pretty sure my i5 is dual core.

I know my core is I5 dual core, but has hyper-threading giving 4 "cores"... game ran fine (except that font problem set-up, which the instructions to get around it worked fine).
