Skinning

what it means for me

I am losing here guys and need your thoughts.

I know since my arrival here my behavior has been spuratic, deleting skins when I am mad or hurt, saying rude things, then happy , then sad, then wanting to quit. Every direction I guess is my point, unstable.

I have reasons, though misunderstood at times I believe.

Skinning take every ounce of my being, I pour my heart into my work and spend so much time trying to make what I hope others will love, not just like, and have yet to do so on a large scale.

I thought I could come up with something new to make this year better and have not, IMO.

I have almost 16 skins better than half done and every time I get close, I start a new one.

I look at what I made and say, Brian, that aint it, and move on.Next skin.

I look at other skins made and just can not see what I am missing.

I need to skin for therapy and stress relief, not add more. When I fail it is literally killing my confidence and making me miserably sad.

Am I the only one who feels this way I wonder. Do your less than successful skins affect you physically and mentally?

I would like to not feel alone on this side of skinning, because you all seem to take what comes and go on with life so much better than me, I assumed you all do not feel as I do. So , I thought I would ask.

Also" any direction or tips on how to make my work more desirable to a general audience would be greatly appreciated at this time in my skinning life.

I want to make skins you like, I want to be liked, I want some tips on how to do that.

I am emotionally attached to WC and its members now, and want to succeed, please help me do so.I will put in the effort and time, just need some help in a direction if you can offer any.

Sorry for my lame post as always, but this is me.DT1

PS, I am sure you all pour your heart into your works also, just do not know how you dont get discouraged.

Nothing is wrong with you Dt....sounds like you are looking for one that you really want to finish. Just working through your own ideas. I do that with my wallpapers. I can have a folder of 30 or more that I am working on. I leave each one when I am stomped as to where to continue or I don't like it so much, no reasons why.  It is just a process, and everyone has their own. First you do it only for YOURSELF, no one else. Because you can not please everyone, you can only please yourself and one or two others, sometimes.

Your blind Acrylistix I just love.  My Under the sea wallpaper goes beautifully with it. I also love the *shelf* task bar. The pinned icons sit so perfect! lol!  Anyway, these are only my thoughts, Brian. Don't despair, there is ALWAYS tomorrow!  <3

I can't type anymore either...always waiting for Jafo to correct mine!

Burden of my life so far;

Want everyone to like me, want everyone to like what I do, been that way forever.

I know, impossible, but does not console me.Gotta be a way to please more people with my work, gotta.

Thanks for not laughing at my post Barb. Thanks for the support.

Any thoughts on my work.?

Too bold. too specific to a theme, too corny, too rough, not spacey enough, wrong colors, ugly graphics?

Any thoughts could help.

Welcome to the world of artistry Brian, it is the same for all skinners I am sure. I do the same thing you do at times, and I do my best also, but in the end I realize that as long as I please myself, I have achieved my goal. Whether or not people like my work is basically irrelevant to me as it it my vision and not theirs. You cannot please everyone, just please yourself and don't stress out on what you think others might think or say.

Your work is really quite good, so just keep it up! :)

Hey Lightstar, probably why it is different for me!

You consider yourself an artist as do I consider you that, but not myself.

I skin because I want to make stuff that people will like, not to be popular, but, to be liked, or thought of, or familiar to others,.

If I skinned for me, I would not know how to start, never do much for me, to concerned how others will feel or see it.

Hope that means I just need therapy and not to quit skinning though, because I like making images and skins.Maybe I just am afraid to call myself an artist because if I do, then any failure would be really bad, whereas , as just a person putting together some images and thoughts, I can  feel like I did not make the grade, but because I am not an artist and have no training, it is not as bad.

Excuses any fault on me .

Anyhow, I appreciate your thoughts and am glad, actually thrilled you like my work and think it is okay, really thoughtful and considerate, thanks.

Now, critique something. A paint margin, a text setting, something is getting me poor star ratings, any help , please.

Barb, so not to get Maverick upset, Acrylistix was his concept. He pushed me until I made his vision, not mine. I wish I conceived it and to this day can not believe it did not get ten stars for the concept, Must have been the art.

Still a first in WB, thanks Maverick.

I can only give one advice:

Skin for yourself, and don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks.

If you like your skin - Perfect.
If someone don't like - Their problem.

As Tom said, you cannot please everyone, so don't. Even. Try!!! You'll just break your neck.

Brian, you said you always wanted to do a Circus wb.  Circuses are bright, colorful, happy....colors are yellow, orange, blue...rainbow colors. I can see a *shelf* task bar, like you made in Acrylisix.  Icons can be animals, or circus tents, all kinds of things.

The blind is yours Brian, do it for yourself...did you ever go see a Circus?  Do it for me, if not yourself. http://www.etsy.com/listing/64834537/little-golden-book-circus-time-1948   ...This book came out the year I was born, it is my most favorite childhood book. It was why I loved the circus.  Anyway, just my thoughts.

that was a very cool design/concept...I had that on my desktop for awhile...it seems working in a collaboration you managed to interpret the idea very well... perhaps try more collaborations... makes it more fun too...

skinning is a mixture of   perspiration... frustration... & gratification... as to the percentages of each is up to each person's personal skill levels and their expectations of self...

I remember when vStyler was around encouraging new skinners he would always say.... work on your graphics... do tutorials... practise practise practise...

Only can repeat what has been said already
Just do what you like, skinning for others is much harder than making a skin for yourself , you will never be able to please everyone,

My opinion is to take a glance at some off wincustomize skins or not even windowblind related skins for inspiration.
There is so much that can be done while only little that wasn’t done before.
Futuristic, oldschool, mechanical, hardsurface, technological, Steamp. themes the list goes on...  or a mix of two

Whenever i upload stuff i also have the thought in my mind to please others, it was even stronger when i started pushing pixels.
Like Snowman LS and others said. all that counts is YOU having FUN, doing what you do everything else will be a waste of time specially if you don´t get paid or any feedback at all after spending weeks/hours.
So have fun.

Cheers and have a nice Sunday

As in makes perfect but perfection is an illusion, can't be done so......you go with what you like, what puts the smile on your face. Like this one. I made a collage of sorts showing the different functions of Multipurpose. Entire sections can be turned on and off, panels made to disappear to show what lies underneath. It has weather, a music player, stats and in place of animations (for some reason they no longer work with smx) multi state images. There are some bugs not that there isn't but I wanted to show you what I like doing best, adding complexity, making it do other than what was originally intended. So take a look and you tell me.

Ok, so I have two quotes above from members that have been here for a long time.

Dude, my friend, my community member, chill out and listen to the above. I'm sure the past skinners went through the same thing. Comments, there aren't as many people around now as in the past and some are just down right rude but that has and will always happen. Some will like your design and some won't as with mine or anyone else that uploads something. It's not all just against you its the way it is. Hell Lightstar has been skinning for 70 years and he still gets shit. My suggestion is don't let it all get to your head. Pick one of those 15 skins you have started, finish it, and upload it. What else you have to do, nothing. Keep it out of your head and just enjoy. You know if you make a few people happy you did your work but most of all it made you happy to make it.

Well said. So stop uploading pictures and get that stuff done and upload the finished result. Hell, I can't use your pictures.

Do your less than successful skins affect you physically and mentally?

The trick is to make what YOU like. It isn't about what everyone else likes.

Stay true to yourself, make what you like. Eventually you'll see that you'll get better and better at a faster rate if you'll concentrate on making you happy.

Then, the rest will come.

There have always been those who think less of me because I "ride the coat tails" of other artists.

I make matching skins because I love doing it. I am good at it, because I love doing it.

When I no longer love doing it, I'll stop. (Guess I almost have, need to fix that.)

I guess my point is love what you do, do it for that reason only, and stress will go away and you find yourself improving when the pressure is off.

You'll be happier, and so will we, because we'll be reaping the benefits of your stress free improvement.

Oh, and I do have a fair amount of original work in my gallery as well, but it isn't near the quality of the WBs I match.

But guess what? I don't worry about that, because they make me happy. And anyone who's been here long knows it's all about me..... :-"    ;)    :P

Wow, woke up from a nap and find all this inspiration, to cool.

Not to take away from any of you, because all of you comments will help me, but snowy, Thank you, last one I expected to encourage or offer advice on how to deal after our head buttin. Thanks for moving beyond that and chipping in some tips.

Uvah, I am lost because I have limited usage of smx, looks way cool and I know you work outside the box, just I do not know what os normal and what is pushing the envelope with smx.

Either way, as Dave said, finish it, people waitin on ya.And thanks.

I guess I will finish my skin, "Evade" and submitt it. I will wait on the weird skins until I decide a direction.

TBC, it will get done and my intent has always been a start menu that looks like the cart in Wizard of oz, the weird traveling gypsy , magician.

Including steps and the back entry.May need some good skinner for a wall at that time....Wish I knew A wall designer,LOL, yes you.Think circus for down the road.

Anyhow, felt particularly chatty today and emotions run as they see fit with me, so thanks for tolerating and responding like gangbusters. you are why I am here, family, comradity, friendship, common interests, however you term it, glad to be part of it still.B

'sporadic' ...;)

Ain't nutthin' different to anyone out there.

Everyone wants to be 'liked', but it's something you can't push on people.  If you're fair-dinkum and respectful of others the 'liking' will come.

The only ones who have a hard time are those in positions of 'authority' over  others.....they're almost always despised by those who feel a need to rile against 'authority'.  Trick there is to just go-with-the-flow.

All 'art' SHOULD be simple personal expression - a reflection of individual style/creativity.

If anyone/someone/everyone doesn't appreciate it....that's fine [or should be].  I know I've always skinned for myself [that way I KNOW at least one person likes it].  I certainly don't look at download counts frantically looking for reassurance.  If someone DLs it....so be it.  If I get an absurd/nasty response I simply ascribe that to the person's poor attitude towards themselves/life/everything/whatever...and no amount of angst on my part will make them a better person/like my stuff.

As Snow said....do it for yourself.

THAT has been the First Law of Skinning since Adam was a pup ....;)

Thanks again all, and I apologize for the drama.

Jafo, thanks on the spell check. knew it was wrong, but did not know the correct spelling and just went with the flow, lol.

Glad to know even you feel the same about skinning. I figured some long time skinners might put things in perspective for me, again, as I was losing it, the perspective, not my mind, that is already gone.

Last post until 2015 from me, yeah , right. see ya around the forums all, have a great monday if there is such a thing.

DT!

Destrohelix, thanks for the post, hard to believe I could inspire anyone to do anything other than run for their life, lol.Keep skinning, that last skin was very nice, a lot of character, nicely done, great improvement.
