Distant Stars Mod both Rebellion and Diplomacy (Trinity) supported.

Under new management.....sort of

http://www.ricksgalaxy.com/DistantStars.html

First I would like to take the thank  rjhughes67 for taking up this project. Nacey has had a lot of things on his plate and so he has not gotten around to Distant Stars lately. He says he will occasionally pop in with comments and ideas but his time is being taken up else where. I, Ryat, will continue to be forum moderator and master bug hunter for this project. And maybe the occasional change/addition.

Second I would like to thank Nacey, -Ue_Carbon, Draakjacht, Stant123 and Skyline (the originator of this mod) for all of their hard work on this project. Also give thanks to all the modders whose mod projects we used, abused and otherwise mutilated for our own mod.

And finally to our fans. Let's face it. Sins of a Solar Empire is a very moddable game and there are some excellent mods out there. We thank you for sticking with us.

And now without further ado the links.....

Ryat,

Thank you for your work.

Just finished my first 10 hour DS:Rebellion game. Pretty smooth, but when it crashes, it locks the computer up completely. Happened twice on a game lasting 9:46, so not too shabby!

Also... 100k health/shield Vasari Starbases... HOLY....

Thanks. I hope to have more out soon once the heat dies down and I don't feel like a roast turkey when I get home.

Never had that issue so that sounds like something bigger then the mod.

LOL, its to handle all the upgraded titans and capitals ships.

Who should I send a crash dump off to?

Wouldn't matter as us modders can't read it and the devs would just say, thats what you get for running a mod.

Ah. Well next time it occurs I'll try to recollect everything that was going on at the time.

Sorry for double post, but needed to make sure it was seen.

There IS a bug that I've noticed on 2 of the 3 factions I've played thus far.

In the diplomacy research screen. There are researchable items that you cannot click--they are outside of the field in the diplomacy section.

edit2:

Map: AI Horde is broken. Needs spread out--not sure why there are three stars? Dunno if Carbon is up to fixing. You cannot see anything in several of the planetary zones unless you are right up close. Very difficult to fight out battle.

edit3:

Game will freeze on "Pirate Raiders are on the loose."

Hi there,

First all, awesome mod. I just wanted to comment on how much I appreciate all the hard work you have clearly put into this mod before I let you know my results.

With the latest version of the game on Steam, I am unable to use your mod longer then ~ 40 minutes without the game crashing instantly to desktop with no error messages. Here is all the information that I could think of that I thought might be helpful. Since it appears I am not the only one with reported crash results, it might be worth looking into further.

Information that I can provide so far:

Game Version:

  • Latest Version available on Steam (1.82.5006)
  • All DLC's purchased and downloaded

Map Conditions:

  • Have only played on a Random Large (Single) Map.
  • 8 players: 1 being me, the rest A.I (Hard Difficulty)

Computer Specs:

  • I7 2600k
  • NVIDIA 580 GTX
  • 16 GB's of RAM

Game Video Settings:

  • Everything set to Maximum
  • V-Sync forced disabled by NVIDIA Control Panel. (Test results show that the game will crash with V-Sync on or off with the mod)

Mods installed:

  • Just Distant Stars with no optional add on's for Distant Stars
  • Version of Distant Stars is 22.4R+FWSP-RG (Core Mod version 07/05/2014)

When does the game crash?
  • As previously mentioned, only when the mod is enabled. Estimated time for each crash is roughly 30 - 40 minutes.
  • Disabled, the game runs fine for hours on end.
  • I am unsure of the game conditions that cause the crash. I gave up after about the 4th time of it happening.

Everything set to Maximum

This may be your issue right here. The core game is a 32 bit application and can only use about 2 GB of Ram. The core game keeps itself below that threshold fairly well but DS can sometimes go over that. Some computers seem to handle the issue with little or no problems while others (like yours) crash often. Recommend turning the models down from very high to high.

It also didnt look like he is using LAA which may help as well?

It might but we don't recommend it as LAA can cause issues as well. The devs do not recommend it so neither does the DS team.

Ah that makes sense. I'll see if dropping the models down helps. Also read in some other posts that a lower amount of A.I. opponents could help also. Will give both a go later today.

And I don't know what LAA is so you will have to be more specific as to what that is. I could experiment with it to see if it works or not just for the fun of it.

Edit:

Did some research for LAA on the forums. Sounds like more people have had issues then success (just about every forum topic I found had a reply from you Ryat ha ha).

I might try it just for fun, can always reset back to defaults if it breaks more then it fixes.

I haven't had any issues using it and there are some mods that require it such as lavos star wars mod.  But I dont want to go against what ryat is saying just giving my own experience with it.

Interesting. I will keep an eye out of that error but I noticed that you are now mixing another mod (I am assuming) with DS and that might be causing the issue.

LOL yes, it is a bit of a pet peeve of mine as some assume it does allow Sins to use more than 2 GB. It really doesn't, it merely makes the OS give Sins its own 2 GB set whereas without it, it merely hangs out in the shared pocket of RAM and when that RAM section hits the 2 GB Sins goes BOOM even though the game itself has not yet hit 2 GB.

Ryat--Nope. Just the DS mods. :p

Also, I thought I'd share.

Opening up an assault with a Koskura cannon, launching a starbase with a titan and supporting fleet while ALSO having an 20/20 ally join you with THEIR titan.

Its beautiful.

I seem to have the exact same problem as you.

Did you eventually found a solution for it? Did dropping graphics detail help?

I haven't played a ton of the Distant Stars mod, but yes I did get the problem fixed. Believe it or not, enabling LAA may or may not have solved the problem. I didn't drop the graphics down, just enabled LAA. I played a 4-5+ hour game with the mod enabled and had no problems at all. Could have just been a coincidence though or something. I played as the Vasari Rebels instead of the Advent Loyalists, so perhaps its an issue with Advent Loyalist models that cause the RAM to go above 2 GB's. I dunno, just pure speculation on my part.

Only reason I haven't tested further was I went to invade a neighboring planet, and they had a mobile starbase with 45k health. My fleets get wiped out when the Starbases are at 20k let alone 45k so I decided to stop playing at that point :p

I presume that the checksums for in-game have been updated?

They are kept up to date yes.

Quoting Verfassergeist, reply 296

Any chance we could get a MD5 hash?

o_O ?

Nope.  MD5's can be faked and thus the reasons for using them are pretty much null and void.  If you unarchive the file and run it and get the proper checksum, you'll be alright.  No need for anyone here to produce a hash for you to compare to after download when the vast majority of the errors happen during the unarchive process, not the download process.  The only download errors that we've ever experienced in the now 6 years of modding Sins is an incomplete download which results in an archive that fails to extract in the first place.
