Retirement of Several Stardock Applications

Retirement of Several Stardock Applications

Today we're announcing the retirement of DesktopX, Natural Desktop, and Aquarium Desktop 2009. They will no longer be available for purchase or trial download (in the case of DesktopX).

Existing customers of the individual products and current Object Desktop subscribers (where appropriate for DesktopX) will continue to have access to their registered downloads via their Stardock account. The apps will install and function as normal.

DesktopX themes will continue to be available from the gallery on WinCustomize

First (in my time) it was IconX, then Object Bar, then Right Click that were "Retired". :(

We got Fences, which is awesome, and the stuff for Win8, like Decor8, Start8 and ModernMix.

It seems like all of the programs you could be the most creative with have fallen by the wayside. :pout:

Not sure about that statement. Windowblinds and skinstudio work very well with win8. You can be very creative with those programs.

DesktopX will be missed which is another program to be creative with. WB and SKS however have been the most creative programs and they are alive and working fine.

Actually, Dave, you can be creative with SkinStudio. WindowBlinds only applies the creation. It is created in SKS.

SkinStudio is only one of a very few apps still left that you can be creative with. LogonStudio isn't 8 compatible, and since Vista, Logon Studio only requires a wall to make a logon. Not a lot of skill required to turn a wall into a logon.

ObjectDock still works, some creativity there. Icons and Cursors as well.

Skinning apps are few now, but we'll survive.

I will miss DX, but I may keep skinning Gadgets. No sense making themes if new users can't use them.

I'll probably look toward skinning Winstep, Xion, and Rainlendar.

Maybe a few cursors and I might look into Sysmetrix and Rainmeter.

Sad times.....  :(

I wish WC would either fix that emote, or remove it.

You getting technical on me are you? I mentioned WB with SKS so actually your statement is put better than mine but I think anyone would have got the point.

The statement posted was "most creative with have fallen by the wayside" I don't agree as again you mentioned object dock, icons and cursors are still there. Really the only hard one there that requires real skill is cursors. OD and icons are rather easy if one has any graphic skins at all.

You and a few others skin winstep and that is not a piece of cake and surely requires skills. Actually they all require some kind of skills as I think of it.

A few you mentioned again require skills but are not and have never been SD programs as you know. Still plenty to be creative with is the way I see it and that is why I commented. You were the DX man and I thought still enough people still used it to make it valuable but guess I was wrong (again as usual)

Bottom line in my opinion is there is still many programs that require skill and you listed many of them. I understand where you are coming from losing DX as a Skinner needs something to do and would prefer to skin the programs they enjoy the most so with DX gone you have the most pain as being the master of them.

BTW: not to hijack but with your operation coming you have to spend most of your time walking, running and at the gym. I will be waiting for that picture of little Jim. It won't be easy and will take some time but you can do it and in a year after it's done you will feel like a different man. I give you all the credit in the world for taking this step. OK, done hijacking.

Thanks Dave! Little Jim is here, inside.

I was really sad to read DesktopX was being sent to Legacy.  I've used DesktopX every computing day for most of this year.

I will keep using it with Windows 7 for as long as I can.

Bring it back!!

It seems a lot of new skinners have dropped off since the loss of creativity in XP logons and bootskins...and some old skinners too...

Many newcomers to the site finding windowblinds a bit daunting first off, would enjoy giving skinning a go with these easier skinning programs...and get good downloads/comments/reactions/interactions from the community.  They were lively galleries which fostered friendships and friendly rivalries...and sharing advice and tips... the whole flavour of the site has changed since losing these... such a pity... but, times change...

Speaking of skinning apps. I wonder if Mr. Decker has any plans on updating sysmetrix or will that too go south.

Is Icon Packager still being developed? One of my favorites.

I have fond memories of chasing down scripting errors to make my objects function correctly in DX. Late nights on chat.  Good times. The falling snowflake object? Excellent.  Use it every Winter. Oh well. It was awesome while it lasted.

Skinning goes thu transitions, and slow times..as long as there are ugly gui's to cover up and artists willing to share their time and creations, Skinning will go on..

It sadens me to see DX go the way side. As a long time user and skinner of the program I enjoyed the vast posibilities DX had to offer.

Unfortunately as time goes on programs are often shelved as the utility or interest drops..Maybe some day DX will be revisited..

RIP DX... we had a good run while it lasted.. 5*

I ain't gonna lie. Even though I knew this had to happen, I still teared up a little when I read this. DX was a lot more than software to me. It was personal, was my gateway to this community, all of which I found at a rough time. DX and this place were often therapeutic. An 'era' has passed, and this was part of it.

RIP DX, I'll never stop tinkering. Thanks to all the brilliant folks who made DX great.

we're so grateful for the work you have done and the scripting you've created to help other DXers.... you're one of the gems of our community... an amazing contributor.....  :)
