Any specifics about changes W7 users might see?

Hi Neil

Do you know when we may see SkinStudio 8? or is the SkinStudio 7 still working in Windows 8? Before I download  and try and install SkinStudio 7 on my Win 8 System.

Thanks

New UI, skinned menus have changed (notice they seem bigger), performance improvements, various tweaks to better handle some apps.

There will be a SKS8 soon as there are some new sections to add and it needs to delete .preview8 files on skin changes to update the mini preview (vs preview7 for SKS7), but I suspect SKS7 will install fine on Win8 once WB8 is installed.

Do we keep Start8?

Do skins for Win 7 work on Win 8?

Do we keep Start8?

If you are using Win8 and you want the start menu skinned, you need Start8.

WindowBlinds 8 does not add a Start Menu, but it will skin Start8 if you have it (Assuming that's Start8 1.16 or higher)

And yes Win7 skins should work well on Win8.  Currently there is just one new section for Win8 and it is optional.

I see that I am unable to change the Start8 start button while running WindowBlinds. It is grayed out. Is this expected?

This is normal.  It is assumed that if you have a WB skin running that you probably wanted the button used in the skin itself.

Maximized windows lose frame transparency. Using the WB Fire, or Laguna for instance. The title bars flatten out and lose transparency.

Windows 8, any window.

Maximized windows lose frame transparency.

Could you be a little more specific?

Like which skin, which OS, which app?

One important thing to consider when using Win7 skins is that the ones with semi-transparent areas that looks well,

may not look as good in Win8 because there is no blur in Windows 8 (ATM) so skinners may want to update their skins

with less transparency to compensate the lack of blur.

One easy alternative for non-skinners and skinners that want a fast solution, you can use the "Transparency" settings

from WindowBlinds 8 (Colour > Transparency) to reduce skins transparency and then you can save this changes as a

skin preset under the "Style" section (see screenshot).

Some new skins featuring new WB8 features will come put very soon, one of them is intended to be used as a base-template

skin and will have some basic visuals and source files will be released too (.psd).

I don't seem to be able to apply any of the skins (Win8 64bit).

I get a dialog "Problem Detected" : Windowblinds does not appear to be installed correctly on your machine. Would you like to try to fix this issue now? I select Yes and it runs something but nothing is fixed.

Also reinstalled myself. Still the same message. Any suggestions?

As a test, temporarily disable any security software you have running and try applying a skin again.  If that fails, please download and run the following utility:

http://sd.stardock.com/SDSupportTool.exe

This is a tool that we use to gather relevant log files and basic information about your computer. Once the utility finishes running, please send back the .zip file it creates on the desktop to [email protected] with your initial forum post dialog.

If you had rebooted after installing, do that too.

I'm not seeing any way to add folders or individual walls to the backgrounds menus. All that show for me are in the Windows/Web folder, or loose in the pictures folder. I don't even see the walls in the WindowBlinds folder in Public Docs.

That's still to come.  This is beta 1.
