So the computer finally is showing it's age

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

What the heck is post #148 all about? Not cool. :(

My post was meant to inject some humor. Notice the name and the list, an impossible list at that. Those who know me here also know that I have a penchant for silliness and poking fun at things. If it offended you I apologize, it was not meant to be so. Ask DoorTech1....he once called me the wise-cracking stepchild of the forums. To me Kona you are a kind of inspiration, a person willing to overcome hardship and remain connected with those you care about and the things that are important to you in life. Starkers will say I'm a nut job and others too may have a handle for me though I remain blissfully ignorant of such things. Even ask DaveBax, he'll probably tell you I'm a couple of sandawiches sort of a pickanick. Be well my friend.

Thanks. I haven't been feeling well lately. I hope things get better. I feel OK physically, just these things I deal with in my head take a big toll on me day in and day out. It has a big effect on not only me but those around me. Thanks for understanding, not many on this site do. Some think I am full of it.

Starkers, any word on the operating system for the new setup?

No worries on the waiting part. It's all good. I have plenty of things to do to keep me busy. I need to reorganize my documents and music. Bike riding. Chores. I'll be fine. :)

Hey what's up asking me. There isn't enough room on the entire Internet to explain what is wrong with you. OK, get back to getting Kona up and running. Don't even know what you folks are talking about. Now if you want to talk about the on/off switch that is right up my alley.

We are all somebody by the way, just levels of nobody's. It is kinda funny you are new, somewhat, because my first encounter at WC was during the help Uvah campaign, and I was almost in tears reading the pages as they were posted. I think that also may have been my inspiration for this. I wanted so much to be part of a good thing, just had no money then, now , well, it worked out sweet. So welcome and hope you stay around, we need all the caring we can get here so next time we throw in together, it goes just as good.

Also,,, REDNECKDUDE, I know for sure it was an oversite on Jaroepz's part, You are not forgotten by anyone, not that you were concerned, and all those who helped with links and suggestions also helped greatly. Last , but not least, Kona, you did some great searches and stayed on top with the communications and that made things so much easier.

Everyone at WC is awesome, this kind of happening just proves it. Glad your my friends and family, hope I get to help some of you out when your in need. DoorTech1

Presently working on Metropolis. I don't remember the order in which they came so I'm just grabbing one up and going with it. Tons of fun.  :)

Starkers, any word on the operating system for the new setup?

Sorry, but today [Monday] was not a productive day for me.  As a result of pain and insomnia, I was up from Saturday morning 'til I was dead on my feet in the early hours of Monday morning, meaning that when Microsoft in Sydney was open to receive my inquiry about the purchase, I was in bed snoring my head off.  I've not had the best time of it when it comes to sleep, either, but I will make the effort to get that sorted out today [Tuesday] for you.

Quoting doortech1, reply 159
Starkers, let me know if you need someone in Konas region to get that os.

Yes, that might yet be necessary.  If Microsoft Sydney cannot help me to make the purchase for kona's region then I'm going to have to come up with another way, and that could well be the answer. I just didn't think it would be that difficult to gift Win 8 to someone in a different region, but that's the way it is,  It's like I said to the MS rep the other day: "You can't want my money that badly if you're putting obstacles in my way.

Being that I slept all day yesterday, I didn't manage to sort out my account issues I mentioned to you regarding Paypal, either, but once I have I'll be able to transfer the funds directly to kona so that he can make the purchase with the MS store in the US.  Now that would be the better way as it would be direct and there'd be no time delay, but if I have to resort to a 3rd party method for whatever reason, then I will contact you by PM to see what we can arrange.

Now kona, please don't worry, I will get you Windows 8 for sure. I wouldn't make you an offer not to follow through on it, so it will happen once I've made the necessary arrangements, okay.

Um, I wouldn't have been able to contribute or help kona without your continued help and support in my life, so yeah, you contributed. :)

Guys, I'm not in this for recognition. We all helped in one way or another.

Kona will have something he should be able to use for some time to come.

One more reason WC is THE place to be. We are family!  5* 5* 5* 5* 5* 5*

The best RnD!

I still want to give Kona Win 7. Maybe he can dual boot. Its the Pro version so he gets all the bells and whistles.

You get it whether you like it or not, RND, you not wanting it makes you more deserving of it. Also, yes we all agree, it was about helping a community member , as I like to say, cool beans. I had a blast.

Sidebar, Kona, got confirmation on the phone today about the board and stuff. Also I noticrd, it appears you willbe getting some ddr2 with the board if I read the confirmation right. I should have got you a few case fans, hope you can get some free someplace, if not pm me.
