So, I have decided to challenge some of my clanmates and other pro players of the community to take *one* new player under their wing and help them get better at sins.  We will look for people who are dedicated and are serious about getting better.  I am not trying to help out every person at once, but rather focus our attentions on one or two people at a time to get them caught up to speed and ready to contribute to 5v5s.

This means each pro takes a player under his wing, and at the very least should:

  1. Shows him "pro" opening, how to take asteroids with only a colony ship
  2. Shows him how to watch replays, who to watch in those replays.
  3. Helps him pick a faction that he is interested in
  4. Answers questions and encourages growth on Steam
  5. Plays 5v5 with them, introduces them to other pro players.
  6. Make sure they have fun and stay committed.

If you are new, or a pro, you can post here to sign up and I'll add you to the list. 

For the new players:

You need to show some commitment and enthusiasm if you expect to be tutored. Every pro has his own standards for accepting an apprentice.  For example, if I have a vacancy, I expect new players to add me on steam after sending me a PM on sins forums notifying me of their interest and steam name.  From there I will conduct a small interview just to get to know them and determine their enthusiasm.  If I like what I hear, I will add them to the list. 

In your post, be sure to include:

  1. Favorite race (if you have one)
  2. Your playstyle (Would you describe yourself as passive, aggressive, or some combination there of?)
  3. Do you have any experience in other RTS before Sins?
  4. What Time Zone you are in
  5. Your Steam name

For the pros:

If you are a pro, you too must be committed to helping a player learn in the long haul, and even if you are bored of sins, you still are around on steam to answer questions when you are playing other games.  Be communicative and encourage them to play sins with you when you are.

While it has been making "progress," the fact that some of these new players being first pick is the result of so many pros like Fluid Karma and Archa Ra and even Auqia abandoning(?) ico, so basically everyone has been moved up a rank or two (or 7)

Devs just want to appeal to the SP and comp stop crowd, and just mindlessly toss things in that would fuck up the balancing just for the sake of looking cool, which I think is very sad. There really should be a rebalancing patch or a mod..... (Cue Goafan)

 

Mind you, I am a regular player on ICO, *cough* RiddleKing *cough*, and have seen this happen firsthand

Bumping due to Steam Sale.

If any new players like the game and willing to learn multiplayer aspect of it i ll be hosting 5v5 games this weekend for anyone free to join ,and providing any help or answering questions if required.

I have just restarted playing (used to play multiplayer when game first came out).

I would be interested in being mentored, but I would be most interested in learning how to do the pro asteroid start, could someone describe how to do it here?

Hey y'all.  New guy to Sins here, have been playing a few compstomps with a buddy to get a general feel for the game, and mechanistically speaking, I've developed a sense for it. This looks like an effective avenue to spare time and get a better understanding of the subtleties of multiplayer play rather than trip around aimlessly myself to find them. To surmise, though:

1) Can't say I have a favorite yet.  I'm averse to picking OP stuff, but the Vasari were appealing initially.  TEC hasn't been given much a chance yet, Advent is really cool and I enjoy their style.  If I had to choose one, Advent

2) Aggressive for days.  Not reckless, but willing to do fun stuff.

3) Been playing since the "Age of _______" games.  Definitely an RTS fan.

4) US Central, -6 GMT

5) koffee510

 

EDIT: Oh, I'd prefer voice comms if that's an option.  I have a mic and everything, it tends to be a lot more effective than typing.

Add me on steam if you are serious about learning the multiplayer part of the game. Not sure how the timezones will work out though as im in GMT altho i do play at weird hours.
