So, Rebellion will be using Steamworks.  I'm not surprised.

Second, Rebellion will have full Steamworks integration for multiplayer and achievements...

Great, another game becomes steam exclusive...

So, does this mean we need to use steam if even if we don't want to play multiplayer? x_x

All of these new features sound excellent! New TEC capital ship sending marine boarding parties....yessssss

Correct me if I am wrong here, but on the second image in the interview, the number of logistic buildings in orbit around the Terran planet is at least 12 (not including new shipyard). Is this just a dev tool? or could a TEC faction (Id say most likely loyalists) get dramatically increased logistic slots?

The dev tool does indeed have a function to ignore planetary build slots, so it could be either one. We'll just have to wait for the beta.

Well, if that's the way it's going to be, then this is where I part ways with Sins. :(

I'm gunna miss this community...

Not sure about it being Steam exclusive, as Stardock is still helping them make it.

They have the final say

Steamworks usually implies steam exclusive. Well, more, you can usually buy the game anywhere but it requires steam to run as it makes your saves available anywhere.

You'll likely need steam to run the game though - nothing bad about that.

Stardock got a lot of the people who dislike steam when it was running Impulse. I suspect things will get ugly when they'll inevitably have to say you need steam to make it run. Like Darvin I'll be extremely disappointed, I'd much rather they just left the lackluster Sins multiplayer as it is rather than require steam.

The only benefit I see about using Steam is the fact that they have a gigantic player base, so this means there is probably going to be a crapload of people that will play Rebellion online. I do hope that if it becomes a Steam exclusive game, a permanent internet connecion won't be required in order to be able to play. I really hate it when a permanent internet connection is required even when you want to play in single player mode...

They're already going to sell Rebellion on steam just like they did with Trinity, so using steamworks won't add anything extra in that regard. I believe you only need to register the game once, then no internet required, but you still need the steam client. :(

Steam in and of itself never requires a permanent internet connection. They have an offline mode that's pretty handy. I agree steam'll advertise the crap out of it whenever it goes on sale!

As for the requiring steam for Multiplayer, Steamworks doesn't really involve multiplayer. The multiplayer system could be identical to the original Sins - all that would be gained (or lost?) is that you'd be able to shift-tab to have the steam overlay/chat on (to talk to other friends etc) and your singleplayer/multiplayer save files would be transferable automatically, say if you started a game on your desktop and then jumped on a train with your laptop.

Some thoughts on the new interview:

Both sub-factions share all the ships and abilities from Sins, plus a new capital ship that launches pods full of marines to board and capture other ships or destroy them from within
Well it looks like the ship boarding stuff so many people requested is going to be implemented after all. Don't know if I should be happy about this or not. I will be, as long as you will not be able to capture Capital ships.

The Pirates won't attack those Rebels no matter how much bounty is on their heads, and a Rebel player can even stash valuable ships smack in the middle of the Pirate base for safekeeping. As a bonus, the Pirates will contribute ships to the Rebel fleet, complete with amusingly tongue-in-cheek pirate voices.
Now this is just pure epicness. Pirate voices! So many people have been waiting for this!

The Advent Loyalists are on a vengeful rampage and use their psychic abilities to their fullest to assimilate enemy ships. Their planets automatically spread culture without the need to build structures, and their Titan can mind-control an entire planet, permanently taking it over. The Advent Rebels, who suspect that their collective consciousness has been corrupted, have the ability to resurrect destroyed enemy ships as their own, and their Titan can consume other friendly ships to keep itself alive.
This seems very interesting to me aswell. Especially the ability of the Rebel Advent titan. Though it is of course questionable if eating your own ships is such a good idea...

Finally, the Vasari: the hyper-aggressive Loyalists can no longer sit still and wait for the still-unnamed threat that chased them into TEC space to catch up with them, so they're focused on mobility. They can upgrade their capital ships to produce money, supply, and research, and their Titan can function as a mobile capital world (and also summon Dark Fleet ships). Once they have that, they have no more need for planets, so they can strip them of every shred of resources and leave behind nothing but a dead, uninhabitable asteroid.
Now that's also some sweet stuff I really would like to see ASAP in the beta. Also the fact that Vasari capital ships can act act as research stations and have them generate credit income is really interesting.

(...) games will be over much more quickly than vanilla Sins' multi-hour battles, which will make it much easier to get your friends to commit to a war for inter-stellar domination.
I am glad multiplayer will become more accessable for everyone. Often I do not have enough time to play Sins online for a few hours straight, so I mostly play single player mode. Slaughtering Unfair and Cruel AI's is starting to become a bit boring by now though, so I hope to really get into the multiplayer scene when Rebellion is to be released.

All in all, I am looking forward to the beta even more now... :X

Well that seems to be the only reason they have for using it.

Stardock was developing its own system for this called Impulse: Reactor when they sold it to Gamestop. Sadly the new owners seem to have scrapped this project and now it seems Steam was their only choice. Why else would they use steam works?

does this mean i still have to keep craptastic impulse for old sins updates if i get the new rebellion?

Yeah, this is what happens when you sell something like Impulse and Impulse::Reactor, to the morons at GameStop...

Like Darvin and Goa, I will probably be parting ways with Sins if it uses Steamworks.

No, but it might need steam though. :S

Hmmm. I already use Steam for some other multiplayer game I bought quite recently. So I am stuck with their client anyway. It is true that there is a lot of advertising, but I haven't experienced any problems really. I do agree with the people that don't use Steam that it sucks that they are now being forced into using it if they want to play Rebellion.

If this requires steam, I think I'm out too. Please don't make it mandatory!

I really doubt this is going to be Steam Exclusive.

Remember when people who wanted to pre-order but wont due it due to not being on Steam. That means they guys who pre-order before they got on Steam will just get a regular digital copy. You actually had to redeem your pre-order code by yourself on Steam. It isn't automatically get on Steam.

So there isn't any worries to that.

I think you all are getting a bit too paranoid with Steam...

My guess is that steam is only for the multiplayer.  And it is going to be better then ICO by far.  Complain about what you want, but steam is more stable and better throughput than ICO.

They said you will be able to buy and update trough stardock store that they set up.

As for rebellion itself. It looks like there will be very different play styles between factions therefore it will be nightmare with trying to balance it especially when faction doesn't need planets and other do.

Don't want to be premature but wont factions that can destroy them be able to slowly "eat" planets away and win by "malnutritioning" other races

Yeah, I LOVE that mechanic... but I'm curious how it will be balanced.

going to be interesting :borg:
