One Piece At A Time : Windowblind Tutorial Part II

One Piece At A Time : Windowblind Tutorial Part II

Design: Title Bars & Window Frames

Welcome to Part II of the 'One Piece At A Time' tutorial. This thread will be concentrating on the design of the Title Bars & Window Frames for the Roan Windowblind. Several skinners are helping me through these threads in an effort to understand and learn how to build Windowblinds. (And they would be Vampothika, neone6, and 2of3) Along with a lot of other talented skinners, artists, etc, who have participated with this so far, we're hoping these threads will also help other would be or existing skinners as well. We also have gmc2 sorting through all of the info posted for hte Wincustomize Wiki.

EXAMPLE:

For these first few parts, we'll be working on the design of the Roan Windowblinds elements and then bringing them all together and exploring SKS (Skin Studio) where we'll take everything and put it together.

If you're looking for Part I, II, III you can find them here:

PLEASE :

  • I am open to suggestions but may not use any of them. Please, don't be offended if I don't use yours.
  • Keep the image posting to the skin(s)
  • If you want to make a skin to go with this, PM me for the files. My PSD's tend to be a mess, but I save everything and will be happy to     share. I am uploading the actual files to the Graphics Gallery here on Wincustomize.
  • We'll be skinning for Windows7, maybe Vista. If someone wants to do XP, PM me and I will get you what you need.
  • Any files you request will come as I complete them. I won't be jumping ahead. Please be patient.
  • ;)

yeah yeah.

Get it out of your system so we can get back to this one.

I won't post anymore of my attempts.

fucking skinners all think they're comedians.

I have to do these buttons for the taskbar and window frame and all but I think I'll be done this part. I'm not sure what part to move on to in SKS that I can skin without having to start applying stuff.

I'll upload everything like before when I know I'm done this section before moving on.

Let me know what I can do next (without having to apply the stuff in SKS) or if it's that time.

In the Gallery yet?

Sorry it's out of my system and won't Interrupt again.

I think you are about ready to cut up the startmenu and put it in sks but will let the others tell you. I may learn a shortcut from them.

Now I have to go looking. I know when I was trying to do Vista I was able to move it.
Yep, but the left and right text margins on the taskbar buttons do not work in W7. Sure would be nice if that was fixed. >_>

I don't have 'text' on my W7 taskbar buttons. Is that 'optional'?

PO: Right click on the taskbar and click properties. Make sure the taskbar tab is active. Click on the arrow where it says "taskbar buttons" You must have it set to Always combine hide lables. Text won't show if it's set on that so use either one of the other 2 options.

Thanks. I imagine this will come in handy when I go to put the skin together. lol.

Yes it will as many people like to show the larger buttons and when you are putting your skin together it nice to see the large buttons. I have changed my buttone 4 or 5 times sometimes from what I thought i liked.

You are doing great.

I don't like that with 7. Just the icon is enough. But different strokes..

That is all I use to use also. But when I started skinning I had to see them so I can adjust the text color. Also nice for checking the states as you can actually see them better.

YAAAAAWN |-O G´mornin.................

May I ask How far in this process did you come in your other attempts to make a blind, And why did you stop/quit ?

Old settings for old people ;)

Yeah, you can adjust the side margins on vista and xp, but it just won`t work on 7. I may have exaggerated about the 2 pixel margin.....might be more like 5, but not nearly enough for the design you were looking at.

With taskbar buttons you have 2 choices:

1. make buttons that will work with all configurations

2. Have seperate substyles for each (small and large icons...text or no text)

I don't believe I ever got past the start panel and task bar. The window frames throw me. The PSD's that Tim sent me helped clear some of that mystery up though. SKS has always intimidated me. I don't get a sense of 'what to do first and this next from it' and once I get the recognizable stuff done or the parts I can understand I feel overwhelmed with the rest.

Now, some people would say that I just get distracted and lo

Ooh, piece of candy!

Just do what I do... Look around in Sks, choose a part you like, re-skin it, apply it, look at it then play with the settings and Margins ´til it looks proper or at least you´ll figure out what to change to make it work... After that -Pick another one and after a while... Voila ! Your Windowblind is done !!   lol
