Dead computer

I am officially declaring my Athlon 64 X2 5200+ system DEAD as of this morning. Nothing I have tried has brought it back to life. It has given me years of good service. Most of the parts can go into a new system. Fortunately.

Motherboard, Processor, memory, PSU, a new UPS, and OS. Most everything else I can use from the dead one. I should be able to use the case, since it is a 15 bay Lian Li server case and able to handle up to 4 way server boards.

Intel Core i7

Motherboard to match

850 watt modular PSU minimum

Windows Ultimate 64 bit

About 16 GB DDR3

All I have to do now, is call Adobe Systems and have them deactivate Photoshop CS 5.1 and E-on Software to have the deactivate Vue 6.5 Infinite and clear out the reg code. What fun this is going to be.

Well, I found a replacement mobo up at Newegg, which means that I can use everything except the floppy drive. I do have an unused X2 3800+, which I may use just to be sure. New PSU definitely. It uses DDR2, so I can simply use what I have (16 GB or 8 GB). Cheap replacement. This is going t cost less than I thought.

Normally I would also. That computer functions as a backup system for going online on those rare occasions when I am upstairs and wish to do so. I will still use it for Photoshop CS 5.1 Standard. Back when I built it, it was the best that I could afford. The irony is that most of the parts are new. I spent $500 to upgrade it earlier this year. $320 of that was 16 GB DDR2. That was immediately followed by my getting my Acer 18.4 inch Core i7 notebook and then building my current Core i7 860 system. The video card is the one I intended for this computer. It was my 2D and 3D CG workstation.

Now my Core i7 box fills the roll of CG workstation, with the notebook filling a secondary roll.

I don't see any point in spending a lot of money when I don't have to.

I agree, if you have an i7 box now I don't see much point in paying for new parts to get your older one backup and running just use bare minimum necessary  plus a little (just so it's not a bag o' sh**) since it'll be a backup machine.

Bryce is a 3D landscape software (environment), which can do single frame as well as animations. Vue is another of those.

My parts list is Socket AM3 dual core processor, PSU, motherboard, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM. All from Newegg. The reason for the new CPU, is there is no socket AM2 cooler mounting on the CPU socket. I could go with quad core, but, I do have to buy food also.

I may spend a little more on the parts and spread the purchases over 2 or 3 months. Hardware in January and the OS in February.

My parts list:

AMD Athlon II 95 watt quadcore, socket AM3

ASRock motherboard (uses 1.8V DDR2 memory, 16 GB max)

Corsair HX850W Professional Series Modular PSU (This is the one in my Core i7 desktop)

Lancool K7 metal boned mid tower case by Lian Li (Same as my Core i7 box) - 19.5 pound case!

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM

 

I have an identical DVD burner to the one in my Core i7 box, plus 1 x 1 TB SATA2, 2 x 2 TB SATA2, a 500 GB PATA, nVidia graphics card, WiFi card. PS/2 mouse, PS/2 keyboard, Logitech speakers, and a 22 inch flat panel monitor. All of these get ported to the new case. I also have both 8 and 16 GB DDR2 on hand.

I decided to replace my Lian Li 15 bay full tower server case, which is feeling its age.
