WindowBlinds 7.2 Trial Problems

Hello,

I recently downloaded the WB trial version. I wanted to see how the program worked and such. I am currently running Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. After installing and rebooting, the program does not allow me to apply any themes. When I try to apply a theme, a windows pops up and reads "WindowBlinds does not appear to be installed correctly on your machine. Would you like to fix this problem now." When I click "yes" or "no" it attempts to apply the theme but instead of putting it, it destroys my desktop and applies the windows classic theme. I would like to purchase the full version but I am worried I wont get what I paid for. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Did you install with full administrator privileges?

Did you disable your AV /Malware programs?

It sounds like you may need to uninstall WB and run CCleaner or similar, then reinstall WB with any Malware/AV disabled, then reboot.

Did you have a previous version of WindowBlinds trial installed?

Okay, I will uninstall anything associated with WB. reboot. disable ESET Security, and install again and report back to let you both know how it went. Thanks for the help.

VerTDznS it would also be a good idea to run a clean up program like CCleaner and clean up the Registry just to make sure there is nothing left of the WB install.

You know, Philly, that just might be a good idea.;)

Did everything stated above. ran cc cleaner multiple times. re-installed with all AV programs and all firewalls disabled. Unfortunately still have the same problems. Any other ideas?

Do you have any other gui altering theme programs installed such as msstyles? Do you have uxthemes.dll on your system?

Also, are your drivers (esp. video drivers) up to date?

Is it still telling you it isn't installed correctly?

Open WindowBlinds and go to the About WindowBlinds tab, copy and paste the info from it into this thread.

Drivers are up to date. And a while back i did use custom style where i had to patch my system and such. My explorer.exe was modified. my explorerframe.dll was also modified. and a few other system files. I also used custopack which was uninstalled.

That may be precisely your problem. you may need to do a system file check and repair your OS before WB will work.

Admin command prompt:  sfc /scannow

The beauty of WB's is that it  doesn't hack away at your OS, which for me makes it the only way to go.

Once you get it working, I think you'll like what WindowBlinds can do. IMHO, it's worth every penny.

From the elevated command prompt run:  C: sfc/ scannow

If you had Windowblinds trial on your machine >30 days ago however, it'll be a sterile exercise. You will need an "unaltered" .NET 2.0 or above.

Did you create a restore point prior to making those 'patches' to your system?  Hopefully you did and you can restore your system to it.

EDIT:  The other suggestion about doing a repair will work just fine also.

Just to be clear: Windowblinds will not work correctly with uxthemes.dll in your Windows System files. You have to choose: This or that.

I ran sfs/ scannow. It is currently at 26%. How long does this usually take? Will this replace the files that were modified?

The time required varies from PC to PC. You will most likely need your Win7 install disc to replace the altered files.

Windows keeps a copy of it's system files on your machine. If you need to replace System files, you won't need the installation disk.

I've never broken my OS to the point where I need to fix it but that's good to know, Doc.

I'm not Yrag, but Doc, I don't think it works that way. I'm fairly certain you do need the disc.

I'd PM Yrag and ask to be certain.

If the System File Checker tool cannot repair a file, follow these steps:

  1. At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    takeown /f Path_And_File_Name
For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.
  2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER to grant administrators full access to the file:
    icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
    For example, type icacls E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /grant administrators:F.
  3. Type the following command to replace the file with a known good copy of the file:
    Copy Path_And_File_Name_Of_Source_File Path_And_File_Name_Of_Destination
For example, type copy E:\temp\jscript.dll E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll

For non Windows system files and to diagnose and fix other probs:  chkdsk /f /r

Okay, the sfc/ scannow has finished. It replaced all of the files I had modified, (I think). I removed everything associated with stardock and rebooted. I re-installed WindowBlinds and then rebooted. Unfortunately, again, the same problem persists.

Well I think this is where it's suggested that you email [email protected] and include a link to this thread.

EDIT:  Does support help out with Trial Versions?

Quoting Hankers, reply 2Did you have a previous version of WindowBlinds trial installed?

1. You never answered this question.

2. It is also unclear whether you have updated (most recent) graphics drivers on your system.

3. Where did you download your trial edition from?

4. In fact, please copy the information in the "About Windowblinds" tab in the WindowBlinds Configuration window (the one which opens when you double-click on the systray icon). This might reveal the source of your problem.

1. I have never installed a previous version of WB before

2. My drivers are up to date. Check the AMD website 5 minutes ago.

3. I downloaded my trial version from CNET, that's where stardock.com redirected me.
