Elemental: Sword of Ambrose

Elemental: Sword of Ambrose

For those of you who have the book, Elemental: Destiny's Embers you can soon download the first in a series of mini-campaigns that have been produced via a collaboration of Stardock and Random House.

The campaign is heavily story-driven and written by Dave Stern who I worked with during the writing of the novel.

The story takes place prior to Elemental: Destiny’s Embers and recounts the early days Lord Ambrose when he was a young adventurer.

The release date hasn’t been set but the plan is to release several of these mini-campaigns to readers of Destiny’s Embers. The first one will require War of Magic v1.3 or later (we’ve been making changes to the game to expand what we can do in the campaigns, that’s why we haven’t released these sooner).

Brad! Tell Hevenfall he's wrong and that I'm right and you love me more!

This is very cool indeed.

And if you write another book I will definately buy it. I don't read fantasy litterature normally but I really like the idea of combining a book with a game like this.

I'm pretty sure everyone else would get it 6 months after release.

Not the Random House content.  That's only for those who buy the book.

Lifelong libertarian to libertarian, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera's You Know I'm Right is absolutely amazing.

Keep up the great work, Brad!

Oh Frog, would it really have killed you to have added the phrase, "Lord Xia was right" to this post?  It wouldn't cause me to stalk you or something crazy.  I mean, how much more stalking could I do?  I'm already in your closet...

Quoting mrakomo, reply 18I hope it will not be so buggy and barren as the original campaign. I have tried it three times and I have not been able to finish it, because of bugs.

I can't say as I didn't play the original campaign.

This one is dramatically different because it involves building up ala a sand box game but with a series of adventures, quests, and events.

Sorry for being a bastard here, but how can you not play the campaign to your own game before releasing it?

It's okay Impinc, I have already been that bastard a hundred times over.  When the game first came out, there was this crazy part of my mind that was convinced that nobody at Stardock played the game at all before it was released...my rational mind told me that that was impossible and stupid, but as I played it there was this voice in my head that kept saying "Did anyone fucking play this game before it was released?"

Perhaps he thought it was only supposed to be a sandbox game but then someone decided to add a campaign and forgot to tell the rest of the team.

That would explain why the campaign feels as finished as an aborted fetus, and is nearly as ugly.

Would it kill you guys to ditch the campaign concept in favor of, you know, not having half finished abominations hiding within the game eagerly awaiting delicious newbies?

I mean, seriously, that campaign was bad. It was so bad it made the release version of the game look good. It was so bad it made the GalCiv2 campaign look good!

edit: Also, I only recognize one or two Qt3ers in the reviews. Is it really so horrible to have Gallant trash you when most of the other folks seem moderately pleased?

I didn't play the GalCiv campaigns either. I don't like campaigns in general. I've never played the Starcraft campaigns even though I've heard they're good.

Well this explains a lot. Why even include it in the game if it's going to suck? You can't argue if the campaigns in your games were crap or not, seeing as you've never played them. Sorry to criticize, you're obviously a successful person. I can't quite explain it, but I've lost faith in Stardock. I don't think you're evil or anything, I just don't like the direction the company is headed. I wish you luck, but I'm probably not going to be betting any more stardock games. Btw, isn't it getting old telling people that this may not be the game for them?

Oh, are they going to fix Ambrose for this?  The last time I tried to play him, he couldn't use armor.

I'm not sure what direction you think the company is headed.  I think our actions speak pretty clearly in how serious we are about our games. We've brought in some amazing talent in the past few months to bolster our games unit. Our software unit has been enhancing our Object Desktop lineup a great deal this year as well and our enterprise group has gotten Fences on HP machines. Things seem to be heading in the right direction so I'd be curious to understand why you feel the way you do.

Just because I don't personally play campaigns in our games doesn't mean they're going to suck. I'm flattered you think my involvement on something is that critical.  Boogiebac, who did the Elemental campaign, is no amateur and has many years under his belt. I'm sorry you didn't like the campaign.  The campaign in Dark Avatar was done by Jeff Pinard (friend of mine from Qt3).  People like campaigns. I don't.

Sorry to nerd rage on you. Like I said, it's nothing I can put my finger on. I was being much too harsh saying i wont get stardock games in the future. I didn't mean to make the guys who did the campaigns for the games feel bad. For one person doing them, they're decent (GC2s were better, and I feel Elemental's was much too short). I guess I feel that with Elemental, you could have a GREAT campaign, and it sucks to see that you don't care about it (I guess that could be argued, but the fact that you don't play them is telling). I always thought Elemental was your baby. If it's me, and I'm producing something considered my baby, I would think that I would go through everything with a fine toothed comb. But, I'm speaking from the outside, with no experience in the industry. It's really strange how I'm feeling about the games division (I dont have any other stardock software). The stuff you guys have released so far looks good, but the more I learn, the more I'm turned off. I hope when FE comes out, it is better than I expect. Right now, I'm trying not to expect anything. It's just that I keep getting this dark feeling and can't explain where it comes from.

Hang in there. I think it's the feeling one gets when he/she can't see light at the end of the tunnel. I feel the same way sometimes. We need SD to fix the remaining engine issues ASAP, publish 1.2 to give the modders a stable platform to release new content, and get new vanilla content in 1.3 and beyond. There are a number of passionate people in the community who are investing their time and efforts to help make this thing work. I would hate to see any quality community members such as yourself throw in the towel. But we all have our personal limits.

Actually this did get made. But I don't know/think it got released because the War of Magic campaign format kept getting changed.

It would be nice to see this updated for Legendary Heroes.  One of the upcoming versions of LH is going to include the FE scenario for instance.

One thing I'd love to see if some form of the dual wield mechanic from the campaign being thrown into the main game.  It might be a nice way to balance out sword-wielders/assassins/ make daggers more useful.

This is excellent news! Although I have FE, I've been unable to play it much as for some reason it triggers bad headaches (which LH doesn't thankfully, maybe a change in the graphics or something.) I'm eager to play the FE Story campaign before the LH Story Campaign, so look forward to that patch.

All the Best,
